Why can't you take these to meds together?

Pharmacist said I had to stop or not take diflucan while on levaguin, why when both are good for cold and yeast in the lungs?

Anybody have any ideas?

Did you ask the pharmacist? If not, I would call the pharmacy back up and ask. I didn't find any interactions when I looked online, but it is possible there is a supsected interaction.

I also don't understand why you say Levaquin is good for yeast. Levaquin is an antibiotic and can therefore cause/lead to yeast overgrowth. Levaquin will not kill yeast.

Both may prolong the QT interval. Taken together, there's concern about abnormal heart beat. From drugdigest.org:

FLUCONAZOLE (in Diflucan Oral) may interact with LEVOFLOXACIN (in Levaquin)

"While the exact mechanism of this interaction is unknown, it is suspected that the use of fluconazole together with levofloxacin will result in an abnormally slow heart beat rhythm. As a result, the regular rhythm of heart contractions will be altered and the potential of a life-threatening arrythmia (abnormal heart beat) may occur. In general, altering the rhythm of the heart beat may be dangerous or potentially life-threatening. Fluconazole and levofloxacin are generally not recommended for use at the same time. However, if these drugs must be used together, your doctor may want to monitor you closely to make sure that you have normal heart function. Ask your healthcare provider about these drugs and this potential interaction as soon as possible.

"This interaction is poorly documented and is considered major in severity."

Aniek....

I'm on levaguin for a cold that went into bronchitis after 3 weeks. They have also added steriods ....BOTH do not kill the yeast but do make it active and or feed it which they have....but I had no choice.

So right now my breathing or lack of is more from the yeast being active, thus wanting to take diflucan to help me breath better. I have one more day left on levaquin and I'm told I could skip that dose and move onto the diflucan tomorrow...

But I'm ready for the ER NOW - as the cold is not completely cleared either.

Idfighter...

I read what you posted....sounds pretty scary.

It sucks when you get sick with something normal and then you must also deal with co infection, which in my case is what is not allowing me to get complete recovery right now after 3 weeks of treatment and third anbit. change.

Not sure exactly what to do here.

Lyme Ed

it's for the head cold that turned quickly into a chest cold that turned quickly to bronchisitis (sp) Levequin is the third med change plus they had to add steriods on top - the breathing was bad.

I knew I had to get thru the full week of leviquin because of the true infection - but sometimes with me the cure is worse because it leads very easliy to yeast reaction in the lungs which also makes you not able to breath...and cough and stuff....so the doc's look like you like your a quack when you tell them this.

I just got back from the ER - doc wanted to add more steriods because of wheezing - i refused now at this stage because i know it is the yeast in the lungs - I reading 98 on that little finger gas level thing they measure with and my ekg was normal as well as my chest xray....

Doc at er doesn't believe it's yeast and even if it was treating it with diflucan right now qould take days as he said - true to a point - however earlier in the day the reg. doc called in some trush tabs to suck on (yeast fighter) and I just picked them uo and what a difference already.

So tomorrow I start the diflucan and in a couple of days I think I will see improavement as I have in the past.

The er doc did mention something to me that I never heard of before which was a lung doc doing a scope kinda thing down into the lungs to grab some mucus and testing it for yeast.....but then again i have already tested postive for yeast in the blood stream and the stool...so what the use. I kmow I have it.
t.
Thanks everyone for your concern and suppor

Thanks Ed that "is" what it is called.

But I know I have yeast there so in my mind it's already a done deal.

It's just a matter of getting in under control on my end, however when you have a flair and you go for help the doc's just don't understand, as I'm sure you know!

Heck I get looked at like I'm a looneyyyyy ! [dizzy]

Actually no they didn't - but my tongue looks fine.

My yeast is systemic, it loves my nasal passages and my lungs.

When the yeast is under control completely - there is no wheezing - no shortness of breath - no need for breathing puffers, nasal srays or anything - no coughing up mucus either.

In the past I tested postive for yeast in stool and blood.
