Just wondering something about allergic reactions to antibiotics.
If you've had them, how long were you taking the antibiotics before the reaction?
What kind of reaction did you have?
Is there a relationship between the two?
I know about the risk of resistant bacteria etc, but was wondering if the longer you took an abx the greater your chance of an allergic reaction. That is my guess from experience.
Thanks, MommaK

Most reactions are pretty fast.

I keep getting these rashes that we assume are a reaction to the a buildup of the abx. I can go for 3 - 4 months, then all of a sudden I break out in an itch rash. Drives me crazy.
So, I go off the abx for a few weeks, then try again. One step forward, two steps back.

With me I can never tell for sure if it's an allergic reaction or just die off. I have a major reaction to almost everything I take, including prescription meds, herbal and natural supplements.
I think I'm just so full of bacterial, fungal, viral infections, and who knows what else, that the die off almost kills me.

On this topic I just wanted to note that pulsing is worse for those who are allergy-prone. It's better to have more steady bloodstream levels. Also, antibiotic combos can be problematic in ways not yet fully understood.

I am alleric to all ABX except fluroquinolones. For me, the reaction always takes place on either the second or the forth dose.
Reactions vary with the drug, but always include trouble breathing, swelling and hives. Nausea, flushing and shaking are common.
The problem of determining whether it is a herx die-off, or an allergic reaction is very confusing, so I suggest doing what I did. I went to an allergist and had proper skin testing for all ABX to confirm that I was really allergic.
I found out during those tests that I was allergic to sulfa drugs also, which I did not know. I saved myself a possible reaction some day by finding that out.
