I got my PICC placed last tuesday and have had an infusion of IV Rocephin everyday since.
I have been experiencing some stuffiness, similar to a sinus infection, on the right side of my head, which is the same side my line is placed.
I also have a wierd taste in my mouth when I do my saline flushes and start my Rocephin.
This evening I feel like I am coming down with a sinus infection, runny nose, drainage, sneezing, sore throat, ect.
Does/has anyone else ever experienced stuffiness in your head, while/after your infusion?
I may just be over-exagerating, but I just worry about my line moving.
When they initally put my line in, it went into the wrong branch of my vein and I felt a swooshing in my ear when they flushed it, so they reinserted it and it was fine, confirmed by the CXR.
I was told by the PICC nurse that I could resume normal activites, but was told by the infusion nurse not to lift over a gallon of milk, to ensure the line doesn't move. I am just worried it did somehow.
If anyone has any advice/suggestions/ect. please post them. I really appreciate it!
-Amy

Amy, I don't really know but you could have a bit of a cold or allergies or something too. I hope it clears up.
Did it start as soon as you started the Rocephin? I wonder if it's possible you had something coming on or if you can have a sinus type herx?
I meant it when I said I didn't know. sorry about that but...
I did want to mention, because I've never heard anyone else say it, that I could taste the flushes, I thought it was the heparin but it's been a while.
I had a picc line more than once and could taste them it everytime.
Anyway, why not call the nurse and ask about it. I'm sure they expect you to call if you have questions or problems.
It probably didn't move if it's all taped down and you haven't gone mountain climbing or anything but it'd still be good to talk to the nurse for piece of mind.
I do hope the stuffiness, etc... goes away and the IV helps lots.

You may have a minor allergy to the Rocephin. My daughter has to infuse Benadryl approx 15 minutes before her Rocephin.
You could try taking an oral Benadryl capsule and see if that helps.
You need to make sure you have an Ephenefrin (sp)shot handy just in case you have a severe reaction.
Just a thought.

Hi Amy,
This could be all of the above and yes I tasted funny taste when infusing also.
Furthermore....
A couple times while infusing I developed lung Bronchitis/pneumonia....so had to follow with flouroquinalones...
You may want to add this to your abx therapy or wait and see if this sinus thingy gets worse...and then address it....
I averted lung issues the last time on IV rocephin two months with a followup month of clyndamicin IV.
Hope this helps somewhat!

I also tasted/smelled the flushes for the first few weeks, then I guess I got used to them and didn't think about it.
I also ended up with a cold while on the IV although my nurse said it the coughing could have been from the Rocephin. I also developed itching during infusion (about 3 weeks in) and ended up taking Allegra for the remainder of the IV treatment.
Keep a log of how you are feeling and make sure you mention it to the nurse. I doubt your line has moved (I had the same worry for weeks!) but she will be able to assure you.
Good luck! Karen

Thank you everyone for your responses!! I am a bit more at ease knowing that many of you noticed a wierd taste while infusing/flushing.
I called my PICC nurse (who I know from work) and they suggested I get another CXR to ensure it hasn't moved. I have been stuffed all night since my infusion last night at approx. 7:00pm.
I may just have a bug, who knows. It just worried me a bit because it is on the same side as my PICC. I am seeing my GP today and will ask her for another CXR and about the possibilities of allergies, ect.
Thanks a bunch everyone, you are all wonderful!! -Amy

I just got home from my GP's office and then a trip to the hospital to get a CXR and my PICC is still in place!
I figured it was, but in the back of my mind, I worried that it had moved. I am just glad that we can rule that out.
I am going to try taking some Bendaryll tonight before my infusion. I have been stuffed up and sneezing all day also, so maybe it is just a sinus infection.
Who knows...
