Hi all
I was a member over 6 years ago when I lived in Maryland and was dealing with Lymes and ticks everyday now live in Florida. Since we all got treated, well at least 1 of my sons and myself and husband we are doing much better, older son and 2 daughters were never treated

at the time they did not show difinte signs, But sometimes I wonder they were sick alot strep ear infections stomach problems. But never got a positive test so drs would not treat. My oldest daughter has now been diganosed with rapid cycling Bipolar. After reading info again wondering if lymes may be the problem.

I came back because my father is very sick right now and I was hoping someone here may be able to help me again with info.

He is 73 and insulsin dependent diabetic for over 10 years. This year he has been going down hill bad about 6 months ago he got shingles and the pain lasted a very long time months... then he got a very bad ear infection and the dr treated with abx I forget the name but starts with L and is strong it did not respond so they treated 3xs 10 days each and then sent hime to specialist and she treated with anti fungal and it cleared up
imediatly,

He then started having pains in his upper thigh and hip and it has gotten progressivly worse. Dr dx PMR (polymyaliarhueamatiod) I know the spelling is bad [Smile] and they did not want to treat because his sugar levels were going crazy up and down real high 300's to extreme lows 30's.

My mother took him to another dr and he started the pridensone.
after taking for 2 weeks and him getting worse staying in bed and eating pain pills with no relief.

We had him admited to hospital they gave him Iv steriods 250 ml 1st night and 250 next morning, and then a couple hours later 500mil. during the drip he started hallcinating and nurse called dr and stopped them but he still got 75 - 90 %.

he went in on Monday its sunday now. they gave 1st dose of iv steriods on tuesday night. and are now giving him 30 mil predisone per day in pill form. and have increased pain meds from darvacet to Dilaudid and morphine

he is moving his arms and legs better but Pain is much worse and he looks alot worse. I tried to tell him that it could be lymes a few months ago and he told me I was crazy in so many words. He lived in Maryland for over 50 yrs and we always were pulling ticks off.

I ask his RH dr if he thought lymes was a possibilty as the steriods are not making him better and he had noted that it was not typical PMR he ordered a teter right then

there are about 5 drs trying to figure out what is going on. I was wondering how long it can lay dormant and if the shingles or fungus infection could have kicked it in.

If it is Lymes how much damage do you think the steriods have done? he was phycotic for almost 3 days after taking them.

Does anyone know a lyme dr in Tampa area?? Any info will be aprecitated

Thanks
Louise

Are you trying to spell...plymyalgia rheumatica?
a poorly understood condition almost always found in patients 60 years of age....

muscle pain in shoulder and pelvic girdle....marked elevation of erythrocyte sedimentation rate....absence of evidence of inflammatory arthritis of any kind...absence of signs of muscle disease such as atrophy weakness or fibrillation and prompt and dramatic response to low doses of corticosteroid therapy....

if the corticosteroids don't relieve symptoms and sedimentation rate approach normal

then it's probably LYME not lymes disease...

PM me for a doctor in Tampa area....zman p s stop the dang steroids NOW!

Did the pain start with/after the shingles? Some people with shingles develop chronic pain that is very difficult to control. It is possible that is your answer.

Here is a website on shingles. http://www.stoppain.org/pain_medicine/content/chronicpain/shingles.asp

Read it and see if it sounds like your father's pain.

Your father could also be allergic to steroids.

Hi all

I am now really confused. Been at Hosp all day.

there are 4 or 5 drs on dads case and they are not consulting with each other!!!

I missed the rh dr. My brother was there and he said they told him that they had ruled out the PMR.
Also ordered MIR he did not ask why? what are they looking for?

Kidney dr came said kidneys are back to normal.

Attending Dr did not get to see my dad as he was getting MRI and he stopped back after other rounds and he still was not back. He did not know that MRI was ordered or by who. Chart was with dad

Neuroalgist spelling again [Frown]
came checked dad and was going to raise Predisone and I told him RH dr said they had ruled it out.
He showed me notes in dads chart written by RH dr and it said PMR not responding well to high steriod treatment
So they were not ruling out other possibilties.

When I think about the last week he had 250 mil 1 day next almost 750 mil. next day 100 mil predisone pill only took a few pain pills darvoset. Dad looked better and moving better still confused but kidneys still were not working right
next day nero dr lowered dose to 30 mil dad took alot of morphine mind cleared.

weekend still 30 mil again but lot of pain meds. still moving arms better.

I am thinking not Lyme because he is moving better so steriods are slowly working. Dr did say it would take a few days to get steriods at right dose. And was thinking it move it up.

If it was Lyme his movement would be worse right?

thinking pain is worse since he is moving more. He got up 4 times today!!!

I am going to Hosp early 6:30 so I do not miss RH dr and ask what is going on? have you ruled out PMR or not! wondering now if my brother got it confused!! So I am now spokes person. too many DR s all talking to different people and not each other!!

I told neuro he need to talk to RH dr to find out he called her but I have not heard what is going on!

All Drs agreed need to stop steriods if Lyme.

What do you think?

thanks Louise

Louise,

The MRI is to check for lesions associated with MS and ALS...but can show up in neurolyme cases and missinterpreted...

tell them they should(MUST) do a pet or spect scan...
Blood circulation to the brain...

Have them check for hyperco-agulation of blood...

unless they're already giving him blood thinners...

IF it's Lyme...you definitely need to get off any steroids...the reason is simple...
They weaken the immune system...

Don't forget that the symptoms will was and wane...and if he's seemingly getting better and you think it's the steroids taking affect...you could possibly be making a hrrendous mistake...

and the steroids will eventually make him worse...
When they gave them to me(pre diagnosis) I would get about two weeks of better conditions...

I don't know why...or even if it was placebo effect...
I suspect it was just a timing thingy when I would get them I must have been in a waning two weeks....
But eventually they made me worse...

While you're in the hospital and some of your ducks may think it's lyme....

Reason with them to try IV Vanomycin or Rocephin...
If his symptoms get worse withing four days tell them about ole Herx...
If he gets better...so much the better....

now that his kidneys are working again pour the water into him...especially if you get some abx for him........
