My 13 year old daughter was diagnosed with Chronic Lyme Disease December 1st, 06. She has now been on her antibiotic for 60 days. She has played soccer since she was 5 (year round, including indoor). She had to lay out of indoor soccer due to the fatigue last session. Last night she played her first game but had major breathing problems. She does have sports induced asthma but this was 10 times as bad and she complained with her chest hurting and even went down on her knees when she played for more that 5 minutes. Has anyone experienced this kind of breathing issues? This lyme thing is all new to us as a family.

Dear Lori,
One of my first symptoms besides joint pain was air hunger.
Just feels like you don't get a good, full breath in except when you yawn.
Had pulmonary function tests done, a nuclear stress test to rule out other factors.
My LLMD is currently treating me for babesia, which is a co-infection. My LLMD said the number one symptom of this is air hunger.
I still have it. Today it is pretty bad, but yesterday I had a good breathing day.
It is a very scary symptom. Before being dx. I ended up being in the ER due to shortness of breath.
Pulse-ox was 99-100. Sorry ma'am. Here is some xanax for anxiety!!
Hope you have a good LLMD. Breathing issues should always be checked out by a doctor or emergency room just to be sure.
I hope she gets to feeling better soon. Will send your daughter and you positive thoughts and prayers.
Hope this helps.

Lori,
Me too, it was babesia, I think. I was sent to emergency twice with it last year. No way you can run while you're getting an air hunger attack. Very scary.
Since other babesial symptoms vanished, so vanished air hunger for me. Lyme treatment and babesia treatment are very different.
Babesia is supposed to be treated first to get lyme under control. Many are tested positive for babesia, it's a common co-infection.
Many on this board suffer (or suffered) from air hunger.

Dittos on what was allready said about Babesia.....
Here is a symptom list----
20. What signs and symptoms would lead a doctor to suspect a Babesia infection in a patient? How many strains of Babesiosis have been identified and how many are commonly tested for in commercial labs?
The following signs/symptoms may be present in those infected with Babesiosis:
Fatigue* Arthralgias* (aching joints) Myalgia* (muscle pain) Drenching sweats* Headaches* Emotional lability* Depression* Dark urine* Splenomegaly* (enlarged spleen) Dizziness* Nausea and vomiting* Cough* Dyspnea* (difficulty breathing) Fever* Chills* Hepatosplenomegaly* (enlarged liver) Jaundice* Malaise* Shortness of breath* Bleeding tendencies, bruising* Thrombocytopenia* (low platelets in the blood) Hemoglobinuria* (red cell breakdown, with release of hemoglobin in the urine) Hyperesthesia* (over sensitivity to touch) Pulmonary edema* (fluid accumulation, swelling in the lungs) Encephalopathy* (alters brain function) Low to normal range leukocyte counts* Possible elevated levels of dehydrogenase, bilirubin, transaminase* Anorexia*
Approximately 25%- 66% of Babesia patients are known to be co-infected with Lyme disease. These symptoms may continue for long periods of time, decrease, then return. A low Babesiosis titer (IgG) often indicates a chronic infection.
An acute or current infection may show a higher reading on the IgM test initially. There are over 100 species of Babesia in the United States but only ONE or TWO species are currently checked by commercial labs.

Sometimes after treating Lyme for awhile, the babesia will show up. Please call her dr and tell him/her about it.
I hope he will consider babesia treatment even if her tests show negative.

I also had babs and mycoplasma - was an endurance athelete most of my life - the air hunger with babs and breathing problems with myco stoped a lot of my activity for a long time.
They are both gone now and I no longer have breathing problems. It took awhile but treatment did work.

I had her exact symptoms in the beginning. My chest pain was misdiagnosed as 'costochondritis' (inflammation of the intercostal tissue) and my breathing issues they couldn't figure out because they did not respond to albuterol in the ER.
For me it was definitely Babesia that caused these symtpoms. Later the symptoms increased to include others and in the end I was positive for Lyme and Ehrlichia (hme & hge).
Do not fool around with this. Get her to an LLMD immediately. I had to take Mepron and Zithromax to get rid of the babesia.
Take care and hope she is feeling well soon!
