i know buhner says sarsaparilla is supposed to *relieve herxes, but i took it today for the first time and i feel awful.

has anyone herxed from sarsaparilla? is that even possible? maybe i'm just having a bad reaction to the herb?

thanks in advance for any insight.

I haven't noticed any probs with it. Sometimes it's hard to tell, as I'm incerasing the other buhner sups at same time.

800 mg, 3 x day - I'm usually really sensitive, but this doesn't seem to affect me.

i'm really sensitive too. i just reread the sarsaparilla/smilax section in buhner's book, and he says it has potent anti-spirochetal properties and crosses the blood-brain barrier (back in the day, pre-abx, it was a popular syphilis treatment!). he also says it binds endotoxins and is a herx reliever. how one herb can do BOTH of these things simultaneously is beyond me, but apparently in my case it kills the buggers, because i definitely had one hell of a herx from it today.

from what i've read my experience isn't a common one, but after going over buhner's explanation of the herb again it doesn't seem totally implausible to me.

I ordered some sarsaparilla tea sometime back since I was looking for something to help detox but didn't want to add any more 'pills' to my regimen....

I cup of tea and I was totally nauseated for qhite some time.... perhaps using a tea versus capsules wasn't the best idea, but I haven't touched sars. in any form since then.

thanks for pulling up those threads, claire. [Smile]

in my case i don't think it's an allergic reaction because sarsparilla ART tested for me by two separate practitioners. i'm gonna try it again this weekend - a ridiculously small dose, like 1/4 capsule - and see what happens.

thanks again everyone.

Heiwa:

I have not heard of Sarsaparilla causing a herx. Maybe your strain is suceptible to it?

Just wondering, have you tried any strong spirochete killers like Andrographis?

I take it back -- I just increased from 2 caps of sarsparilla to 3, 3x day, and it gave me a huge headache. huge.

i don't think it's a herx, just a sensitivity thing.
