i haven't had a coke in a while and had a few sips today.

within an hour i started getting irregular heartbeats, or at least, it felt like it.

i assume it's the caffeine in the coke right? but what cause the caffeine to do this? it's because it's a simulant or something right?

It is the caffeine. I had this problem way before I ever got sick with Lyme Disease. My Mom and sisters are sensitive to caffeine too so it looks like I inherited this. Caffeine always seems to give me heart palpitations.

When I went to my doctor all those years ago she said cut out caffeine and it worked. I imagine that it is because of the stimulant effect of caffeine. I guess some people just can't handle it.

Sick since 10/2001. Tested CDC positive for Lyme 10/2008 through Quest and Igenex. Started treatment 1/2009 with LLMD. Lyme, Erichilosis, Chlamydophila Pneumoniae, Q Fever, Strep Syndrome and probably a few others I am forgetting.

I get a similar reaction and I do not have Lyme. If I drink too much coffee, my heart will beat slightly more irregular than normal.

Caffeine and Nicotine can irritate the nerves in the heart.

It's a stimulant. Stimulants can elevate the blood pressure and increase the heart rate. It also constricts your blood vessels which can elevate your blood pressure. It messes with your blood sugar too.

There are some studies that say it can reduce risk of stroke and alzheimers. Don't know how accurate they are since I don't drink coffee didn't really look into it.
