To sleep, I use an eye mask and ear plugs along with melatonin and Benedryl.

Lately, I find that my ear canals hurt and using ear plugs is painful. I wake up halfway through the night with soreness in my ear canals.

My LLMD says that this is normal, considering that my system is on overload and super-sensitive.

I have tried pillows over my head and an air purifier to create white noise.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Much thanks.

Hiya sweetie. I so can relate ! I had started out using ear plugs, and had the same problems with my ears. The AC in the summer was the best thing, and then I bought CDs to play of white noise, fan, AC. Then I found the Sleep Mate. Google it to see where you might buy one. (White noise machine Sleep Mate by Marpac.) I highly recommend it !

I went to Wal-Mart and bought a bunch of those egg-crate mattress pads and neurotically taped them in the windows... My very own padded room.

It did wonders for my sensetivity to light and let me sleep somewhere other than the closet floor.

hey lalalu! this is something I've been wondering too. I have to wear them every night as well and have lots of ear pain b/c of it.

What I do is alternate b/w the silicone ones that don't go in the ear canal (Mack's) with the regular foam ones...that way I can give my ear canals a break some nights. But I react allergically to the silicone so I can only wear those for a night or two. But alternating does help.

I also regularly use ear drops during the day since I'm getting frequent infections (GSE/tea tree/garlic)

I have noise blocking head phones that I sometimes wear over the ear plugs when I'm forced to be in places that are overwhelmingly loud, but they're not comfortable to wear at night.

personally I can't tolerate white noise - it makes my head go nuts, but it helps many others.

SunRa -- My first time back on the Lyme board in months. (My last PM I sent to you got erased or timed out and I'm sorry I never responded again.)

Lalalu -- What has really helped me w. sound sensitivity: noise cancellation headphones, both the "active" (battery-operated) -- and the "passive" type of headphones that are used on aircraft carriers, shooting ranges, etc.

If you do a google search for noise cancellation or "headphones" a lot of companies come up. I've seen price range from $10 to $300.

I have same problem with ear plugs and headphones are a salvation.

Best wishes for feeling better!
