I am posting this to warn others that if you are hypoglycemic DO NOT take mega doses of Vitamin D.
My LLMD is currently big on Vitamin D3 supplements. On his recommedation, I took one pill of 5,000 IU. This unfortunately caused an extreme reaction in me - shakey, trembling, dizziness, difficulty speaking, very tired - really bad the first day but continuing for a few days. I had been feeling very good prior to taking that one little pill and it didn't seem anything like a herx.
Desperately I read all the Vitamin D threads here and found others who had negative reactions. Still seeking more info, I read on other sites more specific info on Vitamin D and found out to my surprise that it increases the release of insulin. While this is beneficial for diabetics it is NOT a good thing for hypoglycemics.
I am diagnosed hypoglycemic and the last thing I should do is dramatically increase my insulin release. It literally could kill me. I am quite upset since my LLMD knows that I am hypoglycemic and I feel he should have known of this dangerous connection with Vitamin D.
This info may be helpful to those of you who already tried mega dose Vitamin D supplementation and had a negative reaction - could be related to having low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). The negative effect lasts for a few days as Vitamin D is not water soluble (it is fat soluble) and therefore stays in your system for a longer period of time. BTW, I had been taking 400 IU of Vitamin D daily with no negative reations.
I hope this post prevents someone else from going through what I just went through. Vitamin D is important but mega doses are not for everyone!

I am not hypoglycemic and I get really sick from the sun too. I think it's more Lyme related. Kathy

Thanks for the info, I am hypoglycemic also. Do you have any idea if this is why I have a sensitivity to sun? It just knocks me out.

From what I've read Vit D plays a role in insulin secretion but I've found no evidence that shows that taking vit D increases insulin secretion in hypoglycemics.
Low vitamin D is associated with insulin resistance. Vitamin D supposedly mediates insulin secretion. Insulin resistance will cause the body to increase insulin secretion. I read that if insulin secretion is low, Vitamin D will increase it but that does not mean that Vitamin D will increase insulin in those who already have high insulin levels.
Often, certain nutrients will help to regulate hormones and I think that is what likely happens with Vitamin D and insulin.
Could you point me to the research that you found that states that Vitamin D increases insulin secretion in hypoglycemics please?

Although my sensitivity has increased since I've been sick, I've had the problem since before then.
