from what I could tell, getting the right dosage in artemesia is very important, and can be difficult to do with whole herb. I was reading about it due to trying to figure out how to treat my boyfriend's malaria while we waited for his doctor appointment. Some studies showed that (at least for malaria) success was VERY dosage-dependent. Babesia might be different of course.

Wow. I'm truly new at this myself, but I think an extract is like a tincture (liquid). The herb can also come as powder or cut/sift (like bark chips).
I ordered Plum Flower brand for another herb because I read that they tested their herbs to make sure it was the right plant and for purity. I have not verified that myself.
JimBob likes the prices at first chinese herbs. That is where I got the Stephania Root (cut/sift) that I am using to make tinctures from. It is working, so it must be the right herb. No bad effects that I can tell.

Plum Flower does not add a bunch of preservatives to their whole herbs. They vacuum pack with nitrogen and as long as the bag is sealed, should be good.
I store ALL my OPENED Plum Flower herbs in my refrigerator, and some other brands also. Mostly use either Plum Flower or StarWest Botanical brands. Though I think that some of the StarWest may have preservatives.
Make sure it is Artemisia annua if you get the whole herb. Plum Flower brand is what I have in my fridge. I haven't used it for several months though.
At 600mg a day, I found that it affected me more than Artemisinin at 1200mg a day.
BUT I took the whole herb for a longer time, 2 weeks, then stopped, as compared to the Artemisinin for 3 days and stopped for two weeks. IF I were to take the Artemisia annua again, I will probably try it for only a week and see what happens.
Thanks again for the help !!!!

Maria, I guess Buhner has changed a bit his ideas on the dosage of whole artemisia annua he suggested in his book, because now he's suggesting artemisia annua whole herb instead artemisinin, or in case a month of artemisinin didn't hit it.
I guess, no one with lyme can stand the real dose he suggested in the book for whole herb to hit babesia, because it also hits borrelia in low dosages (my experience in vivo, and proved in vitro).
I certainly herxed borrelia with it because I used for borrelia (when I didn't have babesia anymore for months). It's a strong herb. It also had confirmed borrelia killing powers through ART in my case.
But even though we don't take the whole dosage, it seems to be helping for babesia (otherwise, he wouldn't be recommending it, I suppose).
Maybe that's an excellent question to ask Buhner, on dosages he feels works for babesia/ borrelia after the feedback he's getting from herb users.

I think few guys have tried concentrate herbs and, if I remember well, some reacted with allergies to it (or MCS).
I would go whole herb, but knowing that whole herb has variations on active contents. that's what I did: first time with capsules (strong!!!) and then with teas (also strong).
I was fighting only borrelia though.

Yes, Bluelamp, I would definitely go with the PURE whole herb. As a matter of fact, I DID! I am about to switch to WHOLE HERB in the Resveratrol, (Hu Zhang), also.
And I might add, that Selma is exactly right, up above. It IS very strong.
