I haven't seen it yet, but my sister just informed me that Yankee Magazine has an article about Lyme Disease. Being suspicious, I asked her if this is about the ones seeing the bullseye rash and getting treated instantly or if they talk of chronic lyme.

She said there is chronic in it and they talk of Amy Tan's battle, which I'm sure many of us are familar with. I'll be getting the magazine today, but wondered if anyone had see it yet?

Wow...that's great! A celebrity online. [Smile] Since I doubt they use her name as "Daystar" will there be any way to know which part of the story is about her?

Just called our local Borders and they say that they have the issue already in their stores, so I'll pick it up later today. Thanks for the heads up.

Just an update. I got the magazine this evening and it was already in our local bookstore. When I got there, they had six copies, but since I brought it to the local lyme support group meeting, I'm sure they will go fast here.

It is nice to finally read something that isn't only about a tick bite needing short amounts of antibiotics and then you are cured. This goes deeper and done well. Many may be interested in checking it out.

Can someone tell me the issue date on the magazine so I can get someone to buy it and mail to me? Or does the magazine clearly say Lyme disease on the front and make it obvious that's the issue to buy?

Hi DLL,

The current issue of Yankee Magazine is what you would be looking for. It's the July/August issue, but if you prefer to read the article online, just go to:

http://www.yankeemagazine.com/issues/2007-05/features/lymecountry

Hope this helps.

thank you all so much for putting the link to the current lyme articles on this message board. I had tried to find LHJ June 2007 article online, but could not access it, I finally got it from this post! And the Yankee Magazine article is superb. I have saved and printed them both, and hopefully can show them to people who might not believe me, or my story. maybe even get some in my family to see the light (big stretch here, but we can only hope).

Hi.....I was told that the July/August issue will be out in most stores by the first of July. If you can afford it I think it would be very helpful to Yankee Magazine, if you could buy it in the stores. The layout is pretty neat, I think. The first 2 pages are quite dramatic. It would be nice to take a hard copy to your doc or to share with others who have obscure diagnoses.

If you go to the Yankee site online there is a forum section where you can leave a message for the editor. If you go to Edieclark.com you will find an email address where you can mail a thankyou to the author.Edie, the author also writes a monthly column for Yankee called A View From Mary's Farm. She has an extraordinary talent for making the ordinary events in daily life...magical , soothing and beautiful. She has a book on her website of a collection of some of these essays. Why not buy her book, be soothed and at the same time show support for the great job she did. She really wanted this article to make a difference

If anyone here likes to cook, Edie Clark is coming out with a new book in the fall called Saturday Beans and Sunday Suppers

which is essay/memoir type writing of her cooking experiences with some recipes included. I'm sure she will share memories of cooking on her old cast iron cookstove with the oven and all. Take a look on her website under Mary's farm to get an idea of what her essays are like.

Let's encourage more of this kind of article. Thanks Guys!

I couldn't help it! Edie Clark is such a good writer and we lymies need to be reminded of the simple joys in life...so here is a section of her website where readers express their gratitude. Edieclark.com

The View from Mary's Farm
Comments from Readers about Mary's Farm
20-May-2004
Some comments from readers about Mary's Farm:

``Not until I ran into your stories in Yankee did I find a storyteller I could read and reread a dozen times. You may number me among your most ardent fans, even your truest friends. . . .because I am so fond of your work, I often mourn the fact of your lack of exposure.

Since it is a common source of income for those much less talented and interesting than you, why not bring out a book of your essays? The rich and famous do it as well as the many who weren't even good or funny the first time around. We could use such a book of your fine work.''
Doris Finnessy
New Freedom PA

``I look forward to your essays. They are like dessert at the end of a good meal.''
Alice Staples
Ashland NH

``I have been a fan of yours since you first started writing for Yankee. I hope you are going to publish a compilation of your heartfelt columns. . .thank you for your gift and talents in reaching deep inside.''
Eric Van Renterghem
Finley, Ohio

``My husband and I enjoy your articles in Yankee. I often read them to him at a quiet time. I come from a small Bavarian mountain village so some of your writing reminds me of my youth. I was just listening to a song from Kate Wolf and it reminds me of you and the area where you live. I thought you would like to know this song too. Thank you for letting me get to know you through your work.''
Elizabeth Eslao
Germany

``I rarely write fan mail but I decided to make an exception in your case. I've been reading Yankee magazine for more than 5 years and your column is the first and last thing I read in every issue. I've even started a collection. I was prompted to write to you while reading another Yankee poet, Ralph Waldo Emerson, in his essay, ``Nature.'' The gift to see beauty in everything, even the color of the common tomato is a gift given unfortunately to few. But you have it and you share it with us. Thank you.''
Michael Shepard
Bloomsburg PA

``I have continued my subscription to Yankee and I adore Mary's Farm. Usually, like all things that I really savor, I save your column for reading last; unless I really need a boost before then. You are a treasure. Are there other things available that you have written? How about a collection of these columns?''
Lyn L. Logan
Center TX

``On a whim, I typed in Edie Clark as a search on the internet and was thrilled to find your website. As a transplanted Yankee, the Yankee magazine and your column especially keep me in touch with my roots. When the magazine comes, I sit with a beverage of choice and turn to your column first, just to enjoy it at my leisure. It's like a letter from home. Thanks for the information about The Place He Made. That's next on my agenda.
Your fan in California,
Betty Nichols
[email protected]

``The View from Mary's Farm'' continues to be my favorite magazine department. Edie Clark's voice is warmly clear and wittily compassionate.''
Delia Mae Farris
Warren ME

``I just wanted to write to tell you how I enjoy your articles in Yankee Magazine. Mary's Farm just puts me right there in time with you. It is just wonderful to read your publications. In fact, I wouldn't read Yankee if your stories were not included.''
Judy Hudson
Winchester NH

``Your writing to me is like a kind of poetry. It makes me feel. I have enjoyed reading your snapshots of life in Yankee Magazine. I appreciate your work, it is superior. Thank you.''
Scott Feck
Chicago

``Thank you for your Yankee essays. They are a special treat which I look forward to every time a new edition comes along. I grew up in Connecticut and Massachusetts before moving to Germany with my parents in the late 1970s.

Since then I treasure the New England memory and harbor some homesickness, especially during the fall season. I received a master's degree in German and English literature in 2000, but right now I am doing administrative work in a large company. I'm always very much interested in literature and sometimes find my work intellectually not challenging enough.

Would you be interested in considering a translation of your essays into German? I know of New England lovers all over this country who would certainly enjoy your style and perspective, your thoughts and visions of life.''
Anna Katharina Echtner
Stuttgart
Germany

``Your essays have all the virtues of a good poem. I always read your page.''
Jean Burden
Altadena CA

``When my copy of Yankee arrives, I immediately flip to your article. I am always delighted. I am a misplaced Yankee, living in Florida. The weather is great but my heart is in New England. Your articles replenish my soul. My first encounter with your writing was The Place He Made. What a wonderful love story! Thank you for your life with your readers.''
Mary P. Douglas
Bradenton FL

"I stumbled upon your website and was amazed by your work. Thank you!"
Chris Ehnot
Ohio

"I have to tell you that I'm an admirer of your works. I can't wait to read your page in Yankee Magazine! I cannot tell you how much I cried after reading your book."
[email protected]

"For years I've thought and pondered how to contact you. I want to tell you how much your articles in Yankee mean to me. I have re-subscribed just to have them.

In the world that we live in now, time is not spent or reserved for the simple/wonderful "gifts" that we have all managed to overlook. Your book and articles are a sample of these gifts to me, along with nature's beauties, like fireflies, wood thrush calls, a distant train whistle. I read your book and passed it to my mother after my father died.

Bless you, Edie Clark. Live happy and long knowing the gift God has given you, you pass onto others so that we may "remember."

It's the July August issue. Just didn't want anyone confused. Edie has been receiving many thankyous and is very pleased that she may be helping the whole situation.

I'm wondering if there will now be other articles on lyme, written by other publications, which will feel that they must compete. I guess that COULD be a good thing. Here is her email if anyone wants to thank her

Now I'm confused! Is an article on Lyme going to come out in both May/June and July/August issues? 'Cause when I go to the site, it says May/June feature article on Lyme, "Trouble in Paradise". Could someone help clear up the publishing dates discussion? Thx.

I guess there was a bit of mistake and whoever was in charge of that part of the website , put up the the new lyme article with the old picture of last months Yankee still there. They haven't taken off the old picture yet.The lyme article was NOT supposed to be up yet. The new cover(July/August issue with the lyme article) is a girl at the beach with her bicycle. I gonna mention that it is causing confusion...thanks

WOW what a thorough article she wrote on lyme...anything and everything in it: plum island, lyme controversy, dr. jones, lyme patients, etc.

i read this online thanks to someone up above who kindly posted it for us to read.

can this be copied here or is it illegal? anyone know for sure.

i was going to comment after reading it last night, but lymenet went down.

i want to print off a copy here and send to iowa's senator who is in charge of our state health $$$ funding. i've got all my backlog of PHA newspapers to send him tomorrow, and want to include the web site so his asst. can print tht off as well.

i will write a letter this weekend about her thorough job! thanks for telling us about it, and marj; so happy you had a chance at making history on this article! [group hug] [kiss] [group hug]

Daystar/Marj -- Thx for clarifying the publishing date confusion. The site still says May/June on it. Great -- so you get four months of coverage -- lol.

I didn't realize this was you in the article, so congrats on your communication with Edie!

Edie is such a great writer and sensitive person. I feel so blessed to have met her. I can't stop reading her books. I have never read other books over and over but hers just bring you to another place. I like having her essays all in one book "The View From Mary's Farm" .

I was reading this book to my mother in the hospital when she first had her hip operation. She had a silent roomate who didn't seem very happy and never talked. One day I brought in Edie's book and read one essay after another to my mother until she fell asleep.

The next day my mother told me that the only thing her roomate ever said to her was that she so enjoyed my reading of that book. I feel things that are soothing and beautiful are very healing and we need to surround ourselves more with beautiful writing, music, art , colors...and Love!
