This is very, very long - but this book changed my life, and I hope you are as shocked as I was to learn that manmade frequencies (EMFs) are causing my chronic Lyme (and yours, too).

'Cross Currents' by Dr. Robert O. Becker (pages 194-197):

In the early 1980's, the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine funded a very large, very expensive study at the University of Washington, under the direction of Dr. Arthur W. Guy.

In this study, rats were continuously exposed to high frequency microwaves of 2.45 gigahertz (with one gigahertz equaling one billion hertz) at approximately 0.5mW/cm2, twenty times lower than the "safe" thermal level.

The exposures lasted for as long as 25 months, and 155 different measures of health and behavior were collected.

This appeared to be a well-designed study that would finally answer the question of whether there were any potential hazards to human beings from chronic exposure to microwave radiation.

According to Guy, "The results revealed few differences between the exposed and control rats, and those differences for the most part were either not statistically significant or came and went, suggesting that they may be due to chance."

However, one striking observation was noted: "Primary malignant tumors developed in eighteen of the exposed animals but in only 5 of the controls."

Guy hastened to explain that the incidence of cancers even in the experimental group was actually lower than normally expected for the strain of rat used in the experiment.

He suggested that no hasty conclusions should be drawn, and that a "consensus among most investigators that the only strong evidence for the hazards of microwaves is found at high levels of exposure" was still valid.

The project was wide reported in the press and discussed in scientific meetings, and it was the subject of a major article in the September 1986 issue of Scientific American (from which the quotes have been drawn).

A significant aspect of the experiment was not reported either in that article or in the popular press - but at the scientific meeting at which the results of the study were first reported, it was revealed that all of the animals used, both experimental and control were gnotobiotic (a term meaning germ and virus free).

This circumstance alone was responsible for a major part of the $5 million cost of the project.

To produce gnotobiotic animals, the young must be delivered by cesarean section under the strictest possible sterile operating-room conditions (much more stringent than those in use in operating or delivery rooms for people).

Following delivery, the animals must be raised and then housed in totally sterile environments for the entire duration of the experiment.

This type of environment is akin to the decontamination rooms used to house the astronauts after they returned from the moon, or the "bubbles" within which children born without immune systems are housed.

The use of gnotobiotic animals seems to be not only totally unnecessary, but undesirable as well. Neither we nor the laboratory rat normally live in a sterile world, devoid of bacteria or viruses.

On the contrary, we live surrounded by uncountable numbers of organisms.

We generally do not get sick unless we are injured and bacteria enter the body through the would, or unless our immunity is inadequate and we get a communicable disease or infection.

An experiment on germ- and virus-free animals has no relevance to the real world.

The point becomes even more apparent when two established facts are considered.

First, present evidence shows that at least 20% of human cancers are caused by viral infection, and the percentage is considerably higher in animals.

Therefore, animals that are maintained in a germ- and virus-free state have an incidence of cancer that is much lower than expected.

Second, it is well-established that exposure to any abnormal electromagnetic field produces a stress response. If the exposure is prolonged, the stress-response system becomes exhausted, and the competency of the immune system declines to below normal.

In such a state, animals and humans are more susceptible to cancer and infectious diseases.

One can only conclude that the experiment at Washington was deliberately designed to sharply reduce the incidence of cancer and infectious diseases in the exposed animals.

There can be no other reason for the requirement that the animals be gnotobiotic.

Therefore, if we knew the facts in advance, and we wanted to set up a "scientific" project to expose animals to microwaves for a long time but were required to get negative results, we would have only one choice - to use germ- and virus-free test animals.

Being gnotobiotic, both the unexposed control animals and the exposed experimental animals would be protected against the usual dangers of infection and cancer.

In Guy's study, the fact that the experimental animals had a lower-than-normal incidence of cancer was totally expected.

What was unexpected and highly significant was that even with this protection, the cancer incidence in the animals exposed to microwaves was four times that in the control animals.

The well-designed experiment that should have "proved" that microwaves are safe fell into a trap, and the nature of the trap is revealed by the types of cancer that occurred in the experimental group.

These were mainly limited to cancers of the pituitary, thyroid, and adrenal glands; these cancers were accompanied by a significant number of pheochromocytomas, which are benign tumors of the adrenal glands.

There were no significant cancers of any of the usual tissues.

The experiment was designed to prevent the results of stress, but the planners forgot that it would produce stress.

Because stress resistance is mediated chiefly through the three glands just mentioned, we must conclude that the microwave exposure produced an extremely high level of stress - so much so that the resultant prolonged hyperactivity of these glands led to their becoming cancerous.

Considering the extreme stress experienced by the exposed animals, if the animals had been normal (rather than gnotobiotic) the entire experimental group would have died of infection or cancer before the close of the experiment.

Some of the 155 biochemical determinations done by Guy in the course of the experiment confirm this interpretation.

Plasma cortisol is one of the chemical substances produced by the adrenal glands under conditions of stress, and it was one of the substances measured in the experiment.

At the start, the plasma cortisol was equal in both the control and experimental groups; in the early months of microwave exposure, however, cortisol in the experimental group was elevated above that in the control group, indicating that the experimental animals were reacting to stress.

By the latter phase of the experiment, the plasma cortisol of the exposed animals was depressed below that of the controls, indicating that the stress response systems of the experimental animals had become exhausted. This result is exactly as expected for a condition of chronic stress.

These data, which are buried in a multivolume official Air Force report of the project, were first published in the July-August 1984 issue of Microwave News. The experiment was planned cleverly, but not cleverly enough.

It clearly indicated that chronic exposure to microwaves at levels 20 times BELOW the established safe thermal level, produced profound stress and ultimately exhaustion of the stress-response system.

Because the experiment involved gnotobiotic animals, this resulted only in an increase in cancers of the stress-response glands.

Had the experiment been performed under real world conditions, the result would have been catastrophic for the exposed group of animals.

You are certainly convinced of this aren't you? I am not. Germs can cause disease even without other factors.

You don't find the fact that they used germ- and virus-free rats to be significant?

I'm sorry you don't see what is so obvious to this researcher and to me.

We are basically having infectious disease and CANCERS cooked into us, yet so many of you are fighting research.

I know a few on here will be as shocked as I am that this is being permitted.

I am shocked to learn that germ- and virus-free rats were used to 'prove' the safety of EMFs. Do you have any additional info from this researcher that you can share?

Yay!

You'll LOVE it! It will change the way you look at everything. I'm not kidding.

Then you can join me here on my crusade to convince everybody that these EMFs are the reason we are sick, okay? [Wink]

I have done some research on EMFs, simply because I think they are so amazing.

Most of the strongest EMFs are released by natural things, such as solar flairs, fault lines, ect.

Unless you live right next to a certain kind of high voltage power line (which does work up a very high EMF) most of the EMF you experience is nothing more intense that what naturally would occur around you.

EMFs are also very strong around many castles in Europe due to aquifers, fault lines, and the granite stone (which releases radioactive isotopes which is some way further increases the power of emf?).

Scientists think EMFs might be the reason for `ghost' sightings. It is believed that (this was figured out mathematically, and based on research of some kind) time is `more loose' in an EMF.

Also, while it is believed that electronics create EMFs, EMFs can take out electronics. In strong EMF anything electronic usually does fail.

One case: The Bermuda Triangle. Turns out, It is one huge, powerful and completely NATURAL electromagnetic field. This Natural electromagnetic field is stronger than anything most people experience on a daily basis. Turns out, almost on the completely opposite side of the world, Asia has its own `Bermuda Triangle' (I forgot the name)!

It's all pretty interesting, especially when you look at all the natural EMF that has ALWAYS been around. So take into consideration, these things have been around before we were ever around and before this past century of electricity. With that in mind you can assume, we have adapted to them in some way. We have adapted for gravity, atmosphere, and just about everything else that has existed so long, this is one of those things that we might consider we are adapted to too. Maybe not, but chances are we have some sort of adaptation... who knows.

They are interesting though!

Hope all is well and feeling healthy! [Smile]

but tailz...I went looking for my wireless router and found it quivering in fear behind the laundry hamper. It isn't the poor thing's fault and my download speed is suffering.

Could you ease up just a bit?? [Razz]

Oh, Did you hear about the huge wireless wi-fi netowrk they tried to set up somewhere in europe?

When they turned it on, TONS of people became ill, and they had to turn it off.

I do not know any more details, but try looking that up Tailz. It is on the lines you were talking about. You might want to see what kind of thing with the system was making people sick.

Listen - the mistake everybody (well, most) is making here is that if these fields were harmful to us, it would somehow be obvious and it would be relatively immediate.

I'm trying to figure out why any of you would believe the government and the industry-funded studies that have been done on EMF safety in light of this researcher's work. Did anybody here actually READ it?

And it isn't just HIS work. These two books are a compilation of the work of MANY researchers.

And everybody can joke here and tell me I need to ease up, but if you knew the human race was being irradiated to death and evidently the parts of their brains that would help them 'realize' this were already fried, you'd sense a little urgency, too.

The fields around us are WAY different from those coming from mountains and so forth - I know I can spend the rest of my life standing next to a mountain range, but I doubt I could last very long in front of an x-ray machine.

And what do x-ray machines and cell phones have in common? They are both MANMADE.

Yeah - we're adapting alright. I don't look forward to what exactly we are adapting into though.

I for one do not trust our government and I think for sure the studies on cell phones are fixed in the USA so why would any other studies be any better?

EMF illness is Tailz passion, and it is a good passion. The only progress ever made in life is made by passionate people.

Clearly EMF emissions make Tailz sick and so naturally she is focused on getting to the source of this.

How rude of you to turn her post into a comedy routine. [tsk]

Tailz, thank you for the research and information you bring to us about EMF. For sure you are not the only one suffering from this. The only time I have had any obvious effect was sitting at my home desktop computer. Afterward, I would always be very stiff in the joints. Not so when I sit all day at my work computer.

As a result of your posts, I removed my cordless phone from this desk to the guest bedroom where I never go. I no longer have stiff joints when I get up.

So Thank You Tailz! I gain a lot from your posts about EMFs.

Luvs

Someone is channeling school teacher energy. Good thing it is impossible for you to smack anyone with a wooden ruler or I would be hiding with Charlie's router. Someone I know was hit so hard with a wooden ruler in school by a nun he never had to pay for another school lunch or tuition again while going to Catholic schools.

Ligthten up. I am sure EMF's are not good for one's health and I am not attempting to insult or be rude to tailz.

Vanilla - We need to DEMAND the tests be done accurately and evaluated by people who have no vested interest in the outcome. This has yet to be done AND published as 'scientific'.

The studies are there - they are just being suppressed because the economy would go plop if it were to come out that computers, cell phones, wireless internet, cordless phones, and virtually every gadget made today caused some detrimental health effect LONG TERM because of the frequencies being used.

luvs2ride made some good points. I know I bagged my cordless phone, and I'm just happy one person is listening.

And how do people with Lyme feel after they've been to 2 dozen doctors who make a joke of their 'psychosomatic' symptoms?

I had doctors leaning towards me with smirks on their faces because they didn't believe me that my symptoms were real. They thought I was imagining it all - or overreacting.

Do you want to know what I said to some of these docs? Let's just say I used some 'high-frequency', colorful words.

This EMF problem is REAL, and we ALL are affected - just some of us are aware and some of us prefer to be irradiated to no end and wait for researchers (with vested interests in the outcome) to declare EMFs unsafe.

I think the next 5 years (if that) are going to open a lot of eyes, because the EMF problem is only getting worse, and this planet is much more than a bunch of chemical reactions - it's 'energy' reactions, too - and the planet is not going to tolerate much more.

And I'll bet you notice a correlation between each technological surge - each generation of cell phone, etc... - and the incidence in all disease across the board.

Fact is, there are some major flaws in the studies that have been done thus far on EMF safety. Germ- and virus-free rats?

Come on. Research is showing that many forms of cancer are caused by viruses and other bugs.

What is everyone here going to do if 5 years from now they figure out that the irreparable DNA damage these fields have caused will genetically wipe humans off the face of the earth down the road because of some genetic blooper?

Or that these fields will cause all of us to develop brain tumors or thyroid cancer or liver cancer down the road - or some other freaky form of cancer?

I don't think anybody will be laughing then. I know what it's like to live with a liver that is struggling, and it isn't much fun at all to be able to TASTE toxins in your mouth.

Using a cordless phone does make my ear feel weird. I do agree all this wireless technology and cell towers is probably doing us in.

Even my landlord's dog has to wear a collar with some device in it to make it so he will not run out of the invisible electric fence they have going around the property. The poor dog will probably die of cancer if a tick illness does not get him first or a combo.

There was already a show years ago like 60 minutes or it might have been 20/20 where they showed that labs in Europe tested our cells phones and said they had way more radiation then the cell companies here claimed. They also talked about a study done in Europe about how if a cell talker gets a brain tumor it is on the side of their head where they hold the phone the most.

The owner of Virgin Airlines was on the show and he said he strongly suspects his best friend died from cell phone use. He said "When you hold the phone to your ear you are frying your brain." He then started a cell phone company - go figure - GREED.

Vanilla - Oh my gosh! I didn't think of that. I felt horrible in my last house, and my neighbor had one of those invisible fences separating our yards. It's amazing though how I even overlook some of these dangerous fields, even with all I've been reading.

I can attest that cell phones cause brain tumors. My ex-husband had one removed back in February. And yes, it was on the side of his head where he would hold the cell phone - the right.

And cordless phones though aren't any better. Before I knew EMFs were part of my problem, my friend would call and we'd be on the phone for 4 hours at a shot. By the end of the call though, I would have EXTREME anxiety. I thought maybe it was the content of the phone conversation, but in retrospect, I think it was the phone itself.

Does a corded phone give off EMFs??? That's what I'm using now. I'm usually not too bad, unless I'm talking to someone who is using a cell phone on their end. Would that make a difference? I feel lousy even after a 2 minute conversation.

Just so you know and to ease your mind..

I was part of a group asked to test one of the first commercial microwave ovens long before they were on the market.

It is true back in the late 70's and early 80's when this study was done they weren't as safe as they could be.

That situation was addressed and the microwave no longer emits the same level of whatever it is they emmit.

Perhaps that is why no recent studies can find the same problems with the microwaves we use now like the earlier study found?

So zap away.
