Hello all. Has anyone experience a discolored tongue as a result of taking Bactim/Septra? Besides possibly making me more fatigued (as antibiotics do to many healthy people, but don't normally seem to do to me), my tongue has changed color. Its not black nor "hairy" looking, but more of a brownish or purplish color that brushing and scraping will not remove.
Its possible that the color change may have appeared before the Bactrim, but I didn't notice it until afterward. I know its isn't one of the "normal" side effects of this very old antibiotic.
Anyone out there have a strange experience with tongues changing color?

I believe there is an oral nystatin mouth wash that may help with this condition. You may want to ask your llmd about it.
Just a thought!

Hi Blackstone,
Sounds like thrush. I would ask your doc about this...you can't let thrush go to long because, with each swallow, it can travel down your GI track & give you upper GI yeast infection. Not very pleasent. I have had this happen to me several times.
Be careful of the swish & swallow kinds of TX for thrush, they contain sugar. Now I have been using Tea Tree Oil brushed on my tongue. Helps alot but make sure NOT to swallow any of it & rinse well.
hope this helps Dana
none of the above is medical advise...just my 2 cents

Thanks for your responses. I'm not entirely sure its Thrush, considering that all the descriptions of thrush range from turning the tongue reddish, to chunky, painful white paste. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oral_thrush
Mine is brownish/purplish and that's sort of out of bounds for the 'normal' yeast anyway. Thanks though! I'll be calling my LLMDs, so I'll report back what they say.
Thanks
