First off I want to say hello and say that I am very glad that I found this site and forum. My name is David and after many years of suffering with multiple symptoms and thousands of dollars in hospital bills I have finally found the source of my illness "Borreliosis" I am seeing a LLMD IN Springfield for Lymes. I am taking Doxy and Nystatin. I have been doing a lot of reading on the internet (when I feel well enough to) and I am still confused about a lot things. This seems to be a more complex disease then I realized. There are soo many things to consider (co infections, strains of lymes, treatments, doctors etc..) I have yet to read a lot about yeast. My doctor is also treating me for yeast with a large amount of nystatin and I would like to know how this ties in with Lymes. Any help on this would be apreciated.

Dear Wolf,

I didn't have a problem with yeast until I started antibiotics to treat Lyme.

Antibiotics kill both good and bad bugs.

Killing of the "good" bugs will allow yeast to flourish.

Also Lyme depresses your immune system further allowing it to get "amuck".

Very important to watch your diet (low cars/sugar) and take probiotics to replace

"good" bacteria in your body.

BTW, I made the same mistake on my first post.

It is Lyme without an S. [Smile]

Good luck with your treatment and Welcome.

Hugs,

Geneal

WELCOME DAVID*)!*)!*)!!
!)!*)!*)*)!!!!!!!!!!!

Yup, many people develop yeast problems from antibiotics but some people have yeast problems w/out antibiotics- !!! I have been on abx a long time and have never had a yeast problem- people are more or less susceptible on an individual basis I think as with so many other things*)!!!

I hope you are on a good dose of Doxy and watchout for the sun- I had to wear gloves when driving on Doxy because of the Dreaded Doxy Red Hand Rash!()!*)! it can make you very sun sensitive- !! Don't drink imlk with it because it will chelate the doxy out of your system- but eat if you need to keep from being nauseous*)! Boy Doxy made me nauseous!

WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME*)!*)!

Hi.

I've only been able to be on abx for a total time of 2 months but was amazed that by taking olive leaf extract all that time I never had any trouble with yeast.

And that was a miracle for me.

You might ask your LLMD about OLE (olive leaf extract) or allicin, and be clear on HOW you would take either one as far as timing with any abx.

Good luck in finding health. If you look at LYME and TBI (tick-borne infections) as an interesting research topic, sometimes, that helps - but still it can be overwhelming. So, be sure to take really good care of yourself. That matters.

oh . . . if you post again, it would be very helpful to break up the paragraphs. Many of us can't read more than about two sentences without a space break.

Thanks.

Oh, I went back over your question.

How does yeast infection tie in with lyme?

antibiotics (abx from here on) kill off the good bacteria in our GI tract. We need the good guys acidolphilis (sp?), etc.

if yeast infection such as candida takes over that can be a very taxing and toxic infection in and of itself. BUT it can be prevented or kept in check.

This is something some doctors don't have a clue about though. Nystatin kills off candida, or prevents it from taking over in the first place. It's far better to get at it before it takes over so it's good you have the nystatin. Diet matters also.

The Yeast Connection - a book - might be a place to begin.
sugar feeds yeast (and other bacteria, too). Alcohol, white breads and white rice are low glycemic meaning too simple sugar.

Whole grains such as brown rice, wild rice, millet, buckwheat, quinoa have a higher glycemic index and some do welll with these.

Some researchers advise again even eating grains. Others say they are good. It may depend upon if candida is flourishing or not or what your body needs.

Gluten is something in wheat, rye, barley that many lyme pts. find is best to avoid. I can't get into why, but trust me on this.
It helps. But you don't need to reinvent your world overnight.

You might call your LLMD's office and have them send you their page on diet. In the meantime, you can try a few new things if you feel able.

Since you are on nystatin and abx, avoiding sugars in all simple forms helps most people. You want the treament to work as well as possible. Good luck.

Hi David! We share the same doc! I'm so glad you found help!!

Lymes Lyme disease is a real bear, but you are in good hands!

Here is a ton of info on Yeast....Also read my story below and see how I found the dr in Sprfld.

DIET, DIET, DIET is the key. Then, be sure to follow the 5 step plan outlined below. It was developed by my naturopath. It works.

Candida diet and elimination:

Lyme symptoms list compared with yeast symptoms
http://flash.lymenet.org/ubb/Forum1/HTML/021202.html

"Successful control and elminiation of a Candida Albicans overgrowth requires a multifaceted program as described below. Failure to follow ALL the steps simultaneously will result in slow progress and will lengthen healing time significantly. The program should be tailored to the individual and must balance the need to eliminate the Candida and deprive it of its food source while insuring proper nutrition for the individual."

Five Steps to Candida Elimination:

1. You must starve it into submission by eliminating its food source.

2. You must kill it with anti-fungal herbs and supplements. [e.g....garlic, onion, caprylic acid, Pau D'Arco capsules or tea, clove, grapefruit seed extract, olive leaf extract, oil of oregano, tea tree oil, Echinacea, Goldenseal, black walnut, MSM, barberry root, uva ursi, neem leaf, biotin]

3. You must reestablish the proper balance and quantity of probiotic bacteria in the digestive tract. [...multi-strain lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus capsules with FOS should be taken between meals to maximize repopulation of the digestive tract by beneficial bacteria.]

4. You must reestablish proper levels of all B vitamins (yeast free) and utilize other immune enhancing supplements to boost immune system function. [e.g ... B complex vitamins (yeast free), biotin, beta 1-3 glucan, colostrum, maitake mushroom, vitamins A, C, E, zinc and selenium]

5. You must cleanse and heal the digestive tract to promote proper elimination of toxins and Candida and assimilation of nutrients. [e.g...chlorophyll, MSM, omega 3 fatty acids found in flax seed and salmon oils, GLA found in borage, evening primrose and black currant oils. Pantothenic acid, digestive enzymes between meals] lyme disease in Europe is http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/EuroLyme/
