Hi, I think im allergic to Tramadol. I took my first pill last night and I started to itch. No rash but itching. Ugh. It was working too. It did not make me sick to my stomach and it did help my pain. So do any of you know of a drug like Tramadol that I could try. Dang it anyway.

That stinks!! But you know what? Hydrocodone and Codeine make me itch.....and I take them anyway. [as needed when my sciatic nerve flares up]

I've done this for years, so for me, it's not really an allergy.

Sorry to hear your experience with Tramadol. There aren't many others that work on neuropathic pain. Maybe Neurontin or Lyrica if you haven't tried them.

The first time I took 50mg of Tramadol, I threw up. Luckily, I tried it again and haven't had another reaction. Have taken up to 400mg/day for more than 5 years.

If the itching isn't too bad you may want to keep trying it. I also get itchy when I take it, but it isn't too bad. It is much easier too bear than the pain it takes away. It also made me only slightly nauseous the first two times I took it. After that I never felt that way again on it. I only take two times a week on average so it doesn't seem like you need to take it very often for your body to get used to it.

Codeine also makes me itch, but more than Tramadol and it doesn't last as long as Codeine so I prefer Tramadol over it. From what I found online itching is a pretty common side effect of pain meds and doesn't necessarily mean you need to stop taking that one.

Hmm.. I was thinking of taking another pill to

try it again. The last time I had itching was

with Vancomycin and it started as an itch then

turned to hives. Yikes that was horrible and I

don't wana risk getting that again. I have

neurontin also that I can try. My doctor wants

me to try one thing at a time. I just don't

know.

ugh ..

I got hives when I was very young from penicillin. That was so long ago that I don't even recall the experience. Severe antibiotic allergies are much more common than ones from pain medications. I would tell your doctor your concerns and see if they can recommend anything else.

hey Merrie,
Im sorry to hear a med that actually works for you makes you itch. For me, it did not work very well, but it did not make me itch. Opiate based pain meds can make me itch, but that is usually when i first take them and the dose is too high.

A low dose that is good for my body weight will not cause the itching for me. Now i know opiate based drugs usually cause itching. Its an expected side effect.

But Tramadol is not opiate based to my knowledge. So I do not know if that should be a side effect. I would talk to your phamacist about this and make sure its not something more serious before taking it again.

I hope your pain situation gets better! and i hope your health is improving!

This link has a publication on pain treatment options written for patients

http://www.painfoundation.org/page.asp?file=Publications/Index.htm

What kind of pain do you have?

I replaced Tramadol with Vicodin when I was on a drug that had an interaction with Tramadol.

I'm now using Zanaflex for my muscle pain, and it's given me my body back. But that's muscle pain.

My experience with tramadol is that it knocks back the pain but seems to increase inflammation a bit. Increased itching is often found with inflammation.

It's not clear to me why I get such an increase.

Skyler:

Tramadol is not a true opiate, but it is a man-made opiod which might explain the itching.

Best of luck,
Dave

Interesting about the Codeine. I'm glad to see it's common to itch on that and that it doesn't mean allergy. I used to take it alot for Babesia headaches from hell, but the Codeine used to make my lower back and arms itch like mad. An allergist told me it is probably an allergy, even though I was taking it a lot, with the itching, and nothing else happened apart from the itch....so maybe not really an allergy after all, which would be great because I thought I was out of pain med options apart from Tylenol.

Never tried Tramadol, so can't comment on it.

I have muscle pain. It is tightness and sometimes

It gets so tight that it is very painfull. My

back, hands, stomach hands legs everything. Even

my head, which i think causes my terrible

headaches. My doctor wants me to stop taking

advil..but it helps.. I am on skelaxin and that

does help some but some days I just need more. I

did read the side affects on the pamplet for the

tramadol. It does say itching is a side affect.

It doesn't say its an allergy. So that makes me

feel better. I see a pain doctor on Tuesday. I

am affraid. Maybe my pain isn't enough for a pain

doctor. Maybe he won't treat me because I have

lyme. I hate arguing about what I have and why I

take antibiotics. I will just have to go and see.

Thanks for your responses. It is very interesting

and helpful.

Thanks

Merrie,

Ask the pain doctor about zanaflex. It has given me my body back. I have the intense muscle stiffness and pain as well. It's the first thing to make me pain free in 5 years. I started it at night, and it reduced my pain. After a month I added it in during the day and there are now times I'm pain free.

There is no need to argue with the pain doctor about the Lyme. Do you by any chance have a referral from your LLMD? I think that helps sometimes, because another doctor is giving the diagnosis, not you.

Either way, just don't get into detail about the Lyme treatment. Say your pain is due to Lyme. Don't explain any history of prior diagnoses, so the doctor doesn't have something else to latch onto.

If the doctor does raise questions, very politely say that you are comfortable with the diagnosis and Lyme treatment, and that you have come to this office to get the pain managed.

I have said to doctors that I understand there is controversy over the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme, that I have researched the issue and made an informed decision. But only if I get the feeling of skepticism. I also don't use the term "chronic Lyme" I just say Lyme.

My current pain doctor didn't question it at all. He's seen the crazy pain Lyme can cause.

Sorry to hear about the itching. I love Tramadol and have taken it for over a year. But, my new favorite is Lyrica. It works REALLY well with my bladder pain. I did not care for Nuerontin, I felt as it did nothing for my pain.
