for the last couple of weeks i have had an extremely dry nose and it bleeds. i have woken up at night with blood on my face and pillow.

it is swollen and it makes it hard to breathe. my passages are so sore and filled with dried blood that every time i try to clear my nose it opens up again and starts bleeding.

can anybody recommend what to do???

i don't know if it's the dry weather here in texas or part of lyme.

has anybody ever heard of this?

Randibear,

Thats terrible and sounds painful to me

have you tried Vaseline?? How about getting one of those mist blowers and a hood?? Any nasal sprays help??

IF its that dry,,I would second the vote for a humidifier!! The GOOD rotating wheel that can put out 5 gallon or more a day is necessary,,,the cheapies just dont put out enough!!

MOST lymies have hyber coagulation,,sounds like your blood is thin,,,has a doc ever tested your clotting factor?? BUT can be just a blood vessel thing in your nasal cavity.

IF all else fails might wanna see an ENT doc!! Doubt IF a regular doc has enough knowledge on that one!! mostly--just don--

don is correct!

ENT dr. told me just these things:

1. check humidier on your furnace!
2. use humidifier in bedroom
3. use nostrel spray but BEND OVER when inserting it in your nose; don't stand up and lean bck! NO NO
4. rx med like allegra

when you get nosebleeds, DO BLOW YOUR NOSE BUT SOFTLY.

use vaseline or baciotrain in the front of your nose 3 times daily; am, aternoon, and evenin!

thanks for the help.

here's a tip to. since my sister is a radiologist, she told me never to use vaseline in the nose. apparently and this sounds wierd, there is oil in the vaseline that is absorbed in the body. with lymies apparently it goes throughout the system and into the lungs. she says it can interfere with the lungs ability to work or something. said some dr. told her it was a no-no.

i really think a humidifier is in the picture.

Thanks I did not know that about vaseline. I use a cheap Vicks vaporizer $8 dollars from Walgreens and it helps more than anything.

Instead of Vaseline (a petroleum product), you might try moistening the inside of your nostrils with a little mild cooking oil like almond or sunflower or something like sweet almond essential oil when you go to bed.

I've also seen saline nasal sprays recommended for dry nostrils.

Himidifying the indoors is a good idea, but it might be wise to check the humidity first to make sure it's not too high. If you have a lot of static electricity when you touch metal objects and sparks fly when you adjust your blankets, yours is probably too low.

You can buy an inexpensive hygrometer (humidity gauge) at a discount store. They are usually combined with a thermometer. Optimum indoor humidity is about 40-50%. Any higher than that and you can run into a mold situation.

I don't know what your diet is like, but increasing the intake of healthy oils and drinking more water can help with skin and nose dryness too. If you can't eat things like nuts, flax seeds, and salmon, then try adding Omega 3 supplements like fish and flax oil and use healthy oils in cooking or food prep.

Take care,
Nutmeg

Have you been checked for a staph infection? I had a very dry and burning nose for months a long time ago, and many times it would just start dripping blood suddenly. When I was finally seen by a doctor for a fever, I had both a sinus infection and a staph infection in my nose. It can be cleared up with topical antibiotics if that's what it is.
