I read recently where an LLMD said that if you are on any abx, you should be on Diflucan the entire time.

I take mega (about 50 billion cfu) of probiotics, I thought this prevented any yeast/candida issue.

Do we need to be on Diflucan anyway?

Interesting. UP for more responses?

I was on Doxy 4+ months (200mg/day), now on Amoxicillin 1500mg/day. I rarely take a probiotic.

I do eat a yogurt everyday.

Stomach, etc, has been fine. Not sure if I could suddenly have a yeast issue or if my body is just naturally balancing out despite the abx?

I think it is often necessary. I am on both Diflucan and probiotics BUT it is not a good idea to take Florastor and Diflucan together as some believe that it cancels each other out.

hmmm, excellent question. i was on antibiotics a long time without doing diflucan and developed c. difficile becuase of it.

so my gastro said for me never, never to take an antibiotic without diflucan.

but now i'm wondering now that i'm not taking any antibiotics, do i still need a probiotic?

i do take a lot of vitamins, but can a person take too many and overdevelop, sort of?

I was on Diflucan quite a bit of the time I was on abx. I've been taking it for the past 6 months while on abx for this nasty sinus infection.

Even so, the yeast was getting bad. I've been taking Nystatin and Theralac and still have trouble.

My diet has been very clean lately, but I can't say I was behaving myself the entire 6 mo!!

I do believe everyone should be on Nystatin powder or tablets everyday they are on abx. [the powder is nasty, I hear and the liquid contains sugar]

Anyway, I recently found a "new" probiotic I am excited about. I may dump Theralac for it. I think I can already tell a difference after being on it for 2 days.

It's called Dr Ohhira's Probiotics 12 Plus. My bio cranial doc said a patient told him that the one he sells is much stronger than the one online.

So if you have a naturopath or chiro, see if they sell it. It may be stronger.

PS .. It's slightly cheaper than Theralac.

Hello D!

Does your Dr. check you regularly for Yeast/Candida? I started on Diflucan after my yeast levels got a little high. Prior to that I took probiotics and three Nystatin every day.

I immediately saw results with Diflucan (as well as changing my diet). I started only taking 3 per week. Now I take 5 per week becuase I was beginning to get vaginal yeast.

My Dr. checks my yeast every two or three months and I've been OK for the past year and a half.

Hope this helps

Mojo,
How does your doctor check you for your yeast levels? I don't think I knew there was a way to check for this?
I am on 16 Nystatin pills per day, and still believe half of my problems are due to yeast. Feel nasty most days...Talked to Dr. C today, and he suggested Diflucan on top of the Nystatin to get things under control. Guess I would love to know of a yeast test if it's out there..Thanks!

I hope mojo will be back to answer that question. I know you can get blood tests for yeast, as well as stool tests....but the REAL test is how you feel and what your symptoms are.

I've never even had a test for yeast...I KNOW when i have it.

DIET, DIET, DIET is the key. Then, be sure to follow the 5 step plan outlined below. It was developed by my naturopath. It works.

Candida diet and elimination:

http://www.wholeapproach.com/diet/

Lyme symptoms list compared with yeast symptoms
http://flash.lymenet.org/ubb/Forum1/HTML/021202.html

"Successful control and elminiation of a Candida Albicans overgrowth requires a multifaceted program as described below. Failure to follow ALL the steps simultaneously will result in slow progress and will lengthen healing time significantly. The program should be tailored to the individual and must balance the need to eliminate the Candida and deprive it of its food source while insuring proper nutrition for the individual."

Five Steps to Candida Elimination:

1. You must starve it into submission by eliminating its food source.

2. You must kill it with anti-fungal herbs and supplements. [e.g....garlic, onion, caprylic acid, Pau D'Arco capsules or tea, clove, grapefruit seed extract, olive leaf extract, oil of oregano, tea tree oil, Echinacea, Goldenseal, black walnut, MSM, barberry root, uva ursi, neem leaf, biotin]

3. You must reestablish the proper balance and quantity of probiotic bacteria in the digestive tract. [...multi-strain lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus capsules with FOS should be taken between meals to maximize repopulation of the digestive tract by beneficial bacteria.]

4. You must reestablish proper levels of all B vitamins (yeast free) and utilize other immune enhancing supplements to boost immune system function. [e.g ... B complex vitamins (yeast free), biotin, beta 1-3 glucan, colostrum, maitake mushroom, vitamins A, C, E, zinc and selenium]

5. You must cleanse and heal the digestive tract to promote proper elimination of toxins and Candida and assimilation of nutrients. [e.g...chlorophyll, MSM, omega 3 fatty acids found in flax seed and salmon oils, GLA found in borage, evening primrose and black currant oils. Pantothenic acid, digestive enzymes between meals]

randibear,

With the GI symptoms you had, I would stay on probiotics for a very long time.

yes!!!!!!!
probiotics can not completely replace all good
yeast in your body ,no matter how much you take

the longer one abx the greater the chance of
superinfection of yeast.

many symptoms of a non healing lymie is from yeast and not lyme.

also superinfection of viruses is very important also.

must run blood liver functions every month with
diflucan or vfend.

vfend is stronger and kills fungi also.
all yeast are fungi , not all fungi are yeast
mushrooms are fungi not yeast.

It's a blood test. When I was at the FFC they did it there, too. He uses Quest Diagnostic (not for Lyme tests, though)

I forgot to mention that my Dr. likes to use Diflucan because it somehow gets at the Lyme (I don't think anyone knows exactly how, though)

I also take a product made by Himalaya called "Liver Support" (formerly Liv52) and my liver enzymes are always OK - Diflucan can be hard on the liver.

Hope this helps.

My doctor tested me for yeast and I was lucky enough not to have it. I still take a good probiotic, but he prescribed the diflucan for the lyme.
