Before I was on Antibiotics I was taking low dose klonopin for sleep. I weaned myself off and was taking burbur drops to relax.
Now I am on doxycycline and may be starting zithromax. I still have trouble sleeping. Can I take klonopin with these meds?
Does anyone have experience with this?

Hi I take klonopin low dose.25-.50.whil on IV abx.
My primary care doc says it is fine to do so.

You know cheryl theres alot of powerful herbs, etc that work great if you take a high enough dose. I find up to 20mg, (safe) of meletonin works great for me.

I take klonopin and I've been on doxy and clarithromycin, which is a macrolide like zith.
I agree with CD57 that it's a good idea to check fro interactions. You can also ask a pharmacist.
They are the most knowledgeable about such things, and can look it up if they don't know the answer. They are usually happy to do it for their customers.

My concern is that klonopin uses the Cytochrome P-450 liver detox pathway - possibly resulting in excess porphryins that can be a problem from too much stress on that pathway, especially for those with chronic illness such as lyme, and CFS.
You might ask your doctor not just about interactions, but how the liver can handle the total load and what you might do for liver support.
Zithromax may cause some ringing in the ears. You might also ask what you can do to prevent that beforehand. Vitamin B6 ? Vitamin E ?

about SECONDARY PORPHYRIA & Cytochrome P-450 pathway in treatment of chronic infection, this article has some good hints - treatment of Cpn seems to mirror that for lyme, so this can be very relevant.
This is hard to read, but if you print it out it's easier.

Without Klonopin I would never get any sleep. I take a small dose. .50 mg at night only. Knocks me right out. I have taken with doxy and zith.
The only thing about Klonopin my doc told me was that it can interfere with REM sleep and offered me a sleeping pill (can't remember which one) that helped increase rem sleep, but I declined it. So far I average about 6 hrs with the klonopin.
During the day, when needed to relax, I use amantilla from Cowden protocol.

cherylsue, I'm on doxy and klonopin both. I haven't had any problems that could be attributed to taking them together.
I haven't taken zithromax, so can't comment.
Reading this thread has me realizing how strong my sleep disorder is. Not only do I take xyrem, but I was taking 3mg of klonopin for awhile.
With treatment, my sleep has improved. I've dropped down to 2mg of klonopin. I wake up more often, but still manage to get enough sleep, even if it means napping later in the day.

Thanks for all your responses. I tried 1/4 tablet of zith again last night, and I've been having crying spells all day. I just can't take it. I'm so sensitive to meds. Doxy, although it upsets my stomach, did the most for me until I plateaued.
I feel awful today.
