First off...we have no diagnosis yet. No testing even. (Lack of insurance issues...I'm working on it...)

Even so, I'm curious about something. I wonder if anyone has any experience with bright red, peeling palms and soles of feet. I mean peeling like it almost appears as though the skin is shredded, yes shredded.

My son is 9yo. I'm beginning to seriously suspect congenital Lyme because of other things that I won't get into here. Right now I'm just kinda curious about the palms and soles thing.

Since he was an infant (like 3mo-ish, I think?) he has done the bright red and shredded peeling thing with his palms and soles every few months or so.

Actually I think we had about 2 years where he didn't really do it much, and I'd about written it off as over and done with, but lo and behold at church last night I noticed red palms with shredded peeling skin peeking out from under the dirt.

(he'd been playing hard right before church...what can I say? He's a 9yo boy! lol).

I researched and researched the hound out of things when he was little trying to figure this out. All I ever came up with was Kawasaki Disease, which I knew he'd not had.

I even asked his ped. about it once when he was about 2.5 ish (?). She didn't know and seemed totally unconcerned. We just put up with it after that and gave up finding a reason.

I don't have bart myself, but I think this can be one of the symptoms. I know others here complain about painful feet or soles of the feet.

BARTONELLA SYMPTOMS

GENERAL: Fatigue, Restlessness, Combative behavior, Myalgias, Malaise, Liver and/or Spleen
involvement, Abdominal pain, Infectious Mononucleosis-like Syndrome, Granulomatous Hepatitis

BRAIN: Encephalopathy may occur 1-6 weeks after the initial infection and is fairly common in patients
with Bartonella. Note: Approximately 50 percent of patients who develop Encephalopathy can be affected
by seizures (from focal to generalized, and from brief and self-limited to status epilepticus). Headaches,
Cognitive Dysfunction, and CNS Lesions may be evident.

RASH AND LYMPHADENITIS: Erythematous papules (red splotches or slightly raised red spots) may
develop. Such papules occasionally occur on the lower limbs but are more common on the upper limbs, the
head, and neck. The papules may appear on the skin or mucous membranes. Bartonella may also cause
subcutaneous nodules, with some bone involvement possible. The nodules may show some
hyperpigmentation, be tender, fester, and/or be enlarged or swollen, but not always.

EYES: Conjunctivitis, Bartonella Neuroretinitis, Loss of Vision, Flame Shaped Hemorrhages, Branch
Retinal Artery Occlusion with Vision Loss, Cotton Wool Exudates, Parinaud's Oculoglandular Syndrome,
and Papilledema.

BONES AND MUSCLES: Osteomyelitis, Myositis, Osteolytic Lesions (softening of bone), Myelitis,
Radiculitis, Transverse Myelitis, Arthritis, Chronic Demyelinating Polyneuropathy.

HEART: Endocarditis, Cardiomegaly.
Possible lab findings: The following may show up during standard testing:
Thrombocytopenia, pancytopenia, anemia, elevated serum alkaline phosphatase level, elevated bilirubin, abnormal liver enzymes.
X-ray of the bone may show areas of lysis or poorly-defined areas of cortical destruction with periosteal
reaction. Cardiomegaly may show up on a chest X-Ray.

Biopsies of lymph nodes reveal pathology often indistinguishable from sarcoidosis. Reports of biopsies
strongly suggestive of lymphoma do occur.
Tests occasionally show an enlarged liver with multiple hypodense areas scattered throughout the
parenchyma.

I remember 9 yrs ago in the summer and becoming ill with this flu like illness and my feet peeled. It was the strangest thing I'd ever seen. (at that time in my life)

Last summer both my grandsons had strep throat. Well, 7yr old tested positive, 4 yr old tested negative, but had the exact same symptoms as his brother.

Both of their hands and feet peeled. The ped doc told me that was seen often with strep infections???

Made me wonder about myself and the beginning of this flu-like illness in '99. Did I have strep infection then on top of lyme? Or was strep the straw that broke the camels back?

I don't remember being tested for strep back then? Just remember being positive for Epstein Barr Virus (adult mono). But the doc suspected it was lyme early on.

Put me many combinations of abx. Doxy, amox, ampicillian, Z-pack for 2 mths. Nothing killed it????

Went off abx for 2 mths, because the virus came back positive. I then had over 40 sx of lyme disease at the end of that no abx period.

Three years later with many different combos and different abx? Still had the flu-like illnes.
I've had several known embedded ticks since '05.

I was abx free for 5 yrs and improving (not well, just good days and not so good days) and now I've started levaquin abx last week for suspected staph/strep infection?

Levaquin is the abx most seem to improve on with bart, strep or staph infections? My body is not happy that's for sure.

Pam

When I first became sick 18yrs. ago, I had a rash on the soles of my feet and palms of hands that migrated too my legs and arms. I then peeled just as you've mentioned. Interesting, My soles of my feet and palms get red, a strange texture and then peel. This is happing to me and my son right now. This has happened twice shortly after starting new treatments. So, while I can't tell you why, as my DR. doesn't even know. It is happening to me and my son also. PLEASE try to get tested A.S.A.P. I reccomend IgeneX. God Bless
