Hello everyone,

I'm not new to Lyme Disease itself per say, as my entire family has had it for a few years and I've learned about as much as you can about it. With that being said, my body is fairly new to treatment.

When I was about 7 years old, I was VERY ill and ended up being hospitalized with "strep in the blood" and was put on IV antibiotics and got well almost immediately. Later, the doctors admitted that they had no idea what it was. My and my family's conclusion was that it was my first incident with Lyme. I also later tested IGG positive for Lyme through Igenex.

Fast forward 11 years and I've been symptomatic lately and have begun taking Amoxicillin & Biaxin (along with Prilosec) 4 weeks ago to treat my Lyme (and also H.pylori which was thought to be) which has been flaring up for sure lately.

I'm a very active person (and have been for years), exercising 4-8 hours per week and follow a strict diet and have been doing great until recently when I went through the flu and some stressful times which seemed to "awaken" my symptoms.

I've run in to quite the problem with carbohydrates or things with fiber in them lately. About a week ago I noticed when I ate any fruits, vegetables, or carbs, I'd get a very bad burning sensation in my upper abdomen and diarrhea would follow shortly. Nausea is also very common with this and is also one of my strong symptoms in general. It's been about 4 days since I had any carbs or foods with fiber in them and tonight I tried a fiber supplement, and so little of it I might add, (1 teaspoon, 2 grams of fiber, 1 carb) and had diarrhea an hour later after not having diarrhea since my last encounter with fruits and vegetables. I have no problems with protein & fat based foods however. But, then again, I'm not sure if this is a response to carbs alone necessarily. I can eat a slice of cheese which has 6 carbs in it ( and I can eat multiple slices) and not have a reaction. It seems to be more fiber related.

I also decided to get checked out by my primary doctor in case it could be anything else and of course no problems were found and I got the brilliant "you need a psychologist" conclusion.

I've never had problems with fruits or veggies in the past and this just came out of no where. Also, things like pepto-bismol do not help. Nothing does that I've tried yet. I also drink lots of water every day and that is my only fluid source.

My medications/supplements currently:

Amoxicillin (2 in the morning, 2 at night)
Biaxin (1 in the morning, 1 at night)
Prilosec (1 in the morning)
Probiotics (2 per day, 10 billion organisms)
Magnesium Citrate (200mg per day)
ZMA (450mg of Magnesium, 10.5mg of B6, 30mg of Zinc)
Bromelain
Papaya
Beano (another digestive enzyme)
Ester-C Vitamin C (1000mg per day)
Candida Clear
Milk thistle (1 per day)
Vitamin B12 sublingual (2000mcg)
The Sun! I'm in the sun for about 30-45 minutes a day to get my D.

Supplements taken throughout the day.

Main Lyme Symptoms:

Nausea
"Lump in the throat" feeling
Anxiety ensues from wanting to vomit feeling, but no actual vomitting ever occurs
Diarrhea and upset stomach w/ carbs & fiber
Heart Palpatations
"Butterflies" in chest
20lbs lost in 4 weeks

Again, I have absolutely no problems with diarrhea and very litte nausea (if at all) when eating no carbs or fiber. As soon as the fiber/carbs hit, all hell breaks loose in my GI tract. Also, no one else in my family with Lyme has had this issue.

What should I do?

I experienced the same problem. It appears to be inflammatory based. I had no choice but to use steroids as I was undiagnosed at the time, but that did resolve the problem.

Find away to decrease inflammation, perhaps with acid reflux medications like Nexium, Prilosec or other herbal therapies which decrease acid production, thus reducing inflammation. You appear to already be using one of these, so perhaps Nexium may be stronger. Ginger root may be of value.

I've heard of Leaky Gut Syndrome, and I do suspect that's what took place in my case. The lining of the G.I. tract gradually wears down from chronic inflammation -- especially Lyme, and some people experience "Leaky Gut". The food particles/molecules pass into the blood in sizes which are larger than normal as a result of the damaged lining, triggering an immediate immune response. This would lead to chills, fever, -- an allergic reaction basically, and your bowel immediately tries to "dump" it. Dumping Syndrome is another problem, but sometimes connected. The stomache empties before food is broken down enough to pass into the small intestine.

I really hope you feel better and that this information is a little useful. Perhaps other patients have experienced this, you might do a search on Leaky Gut here on the forums, it could be the problem.

Look over your medications as well, some of them could contribute to wear and tear on the G.I. tract, especially the stomach. Acidic products too.

Hypoglycemia??? Mayo says: Hypoglycemia isn't a disease itself -- it's an indicator of a health problem. Most hypoglycemia occurs when you haven't eaten. More here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hypoglycemia/DS00198/DSECTION=1

Also interesting: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/digestive-system/DG00050

Symptoms that match yours taken from:
http://www.medicinenet.com/hypoglycemia/page2.htm

While there is some degree of variability among people, most will usually develop symptoms suggestive of hypoglycemia when blood glucose levels are lowered to the mid 50's. The first set of symptoms are called neuro-genic (or sympathetic) because they relate to the nervous system's response to hypoglycemia. Patients may experience any of the following;

nervousness,
sweating,
intense hunger,
trembling,
weakness,
palpitations, and
often have trouble speaking.

Hi
Sorry you are having a rough time of it.

I agree with Betty that it might be useful to look at allergies or a gluten reaction.

Also as was said read up on side effects of the meds and supplements you are taking.

Finally, find a Dr. to do comprehensive stool testing to rule out a GI parasite infection like giardia, microsporidium or others.

Unfortunately the results from these tests can often take a week or more to culture... so get it done soon if possible.

Wishing you the best! [Smile]

I agree that you should check out the gluten issue. www.celiac.com [gluten can cause the palps, anxiety, diarrhea, nausea, etc]

Also, maybe it would be valuable to do an elimination diet.

Then you could isolate exactly what it is that's causing your problems.
