Hello all!

I'm so confused. I've gotten a lot of conflicting info and am hoping someone can clear this up for me once and for all.

I've been told Zith is a great drug for Lyme and that's what I'm on right now. I've been told, however, that it does not cross the blood-brain barrier. Wouldn't a drug NEED to cross the BBB to be effective in cases of Neuro Lyme? Does anyone know if it crosses the BBB AT ALL?

I'd be able to rest easier if I knew it penetrated the BBB at least a little. Thanks!!!

I thought it crossed the BBB but the bes way to do it is high dose IV, and do more than JUST zithromax.

There was a post a long time ago outlining various antibiotics and

The blood brain barrier.

If I remember correctly zithromax crosses it...although weakly.

Hugs,

Geneal

My doc won't do more than 1 abx at a time and my hands are tied b/c she takes insurance and none of the LLMD's do so I can't afford to go to one.

She has a special interest in Lyme but I guess she is not an ILADS LLMD.

Maybe I could talk her into IV but I'd need one that covers Mycoplasma as well. Any idea which IV's cover Lyme and Mycoplasma?

Thanks Byron and Geneal,

Geneal,

Our last 2 posts got crossed. I'll try to find that post about abx that cross the BBB.

So I'm starting to wonder if I will get better on just one abx at a time. I don't know what to do since I can't afford a doctor that doesn't take insurance. I think my doctor would give me IV but I'm a little scared of doing IV abx as I've heard horror stories of people developing life threatening infections from the IV line.

My dr. also said she doesn't use cyst busters.

My doc says there is evidence that biaxin, another macrolide, crosses the bbb.

And given the response that I have had to biaxin after several weeks of taking it, I would totally agree!

But sorry, I am not sure about zith. If you do a search in the medical section, someone has probably posted this info in the past.

laura j,

Although I can't speak for adults, my son's llmd uses zith to augment the effectiveness of his other abx. Each time we have tried to go on just one abx, he has become more symptomatic. We add zith, and symptoms improve dramatically.

I should add though that we suspect a coinfection of bart, and from what I gather, the zith can address bart. (this would also explain why symptoms increase without the zith). He is a young child, so medications for coinfections seem to be limited.

Zith also seems to address his GI issues (he can't feel when he has to have a bm). We have had improvement twice (regaining of sensation) just to have it go away when he went off of zith.

He just started back on it, we'll have to see if it gets better yet again. When I did search here on the issue of incontinence, I found that others had also felt that zith helped with GI/incontinence issues.

I hope this helps.

Laura,

I've been on Zith for over a month and no brain improvements yet.

It passes the bbb, though quite weakly - I found this in some medical journal.

I have found that resveratrol and artemisinin (two Buhner herbs) both cross the bbb with EASE. I recommend these. I just ordered some resveratrol online, so I'm not sure yet.

I'm not sure, but I believe Biaxin crosses bbb more effectively than Zith. I am sure that it has been said to be more effective than Zith (my llmd and Burrascano's guidelines).

I've consistently found that IV abx are the way to go in order to cross BBB effectively. It seems to me that any abx (doxy, Zith, Biaxin, Rifampin, etc.) better crosses bbb in IV form.
