Hello,
I have an 8 year old daughter who tested positive for LD and Babesia through Igenex. I have LD, Bart, and Babs myself, and I have been taking probiotics and diflucan along with my various antibiotics since August '07.

My question is, to any of you all that have kids around my daughter's age, do they take probiotics and other supplements?
It seems to me that she should really be taking something to replace the flora and also some good vitamins.

My daughter has been complaining of a lot of stomach pain these last two weeks, and I am wondering if yeast is the problem. We have an appointment with her LLMD two weeks from now, and I have put in a message for him to call me. In the meantime, I was just wondering if anybody else on the board had experience with this.

She has been on 125mg of Zithromax since February, and also takes Cholestyramine, Malic B6, and Magnesium. We tried her on both Flagyl and Malarone, and both made her so sick that her LLMD switched her back to Zithromax for the time being.

She is still having mauscle pain, agonizing daily headaches, light and sound sensitivity, nausea, and insomnia.

If anyone has any suggestions or experiences with kids that have LD, could you please let me know your opinion?

I realize this is ultimately a question for her LLMD, but I would like to have some other input from some fellow Lymies.

Thanks!
Stefanie

Hi Stefanie, I have 2 daughters with Lyme and Baronella. They are 8 and 10.

My 10 year old was on abx for 2 years and my 8 year old is just coming up to a year. Probiotics are their best friend!

I buy BioK for them - it's like plain yogurt but a bit more sour. Always take probiotics a few hours away from the abx.

We were at our family physician the other day to update him on their treatment and progress and he was shocked that they never had any problems with yeast or diarrhea while on abx for that long.

The last thing you want to happen with your daughter is for her to get yeast and I definitely urge you to do what you can to prevent it.

Was your daughter tested for Bartonella? Mine both had negative tests but they both had Bart. You mentioned a couple of symptoms that really perked my ears up for Bart.

My girls take Zithro + Rifampin for Bart and it has been like a miracle cure for them.

Please feel free to PM me as I have gone through this whole Lyme thing with 2 kids who are similar ages to your daughter.

Absolutely!

I have a 10 year son that has been under antibiotic treatment for 3 years and he has been taking probiotics since the begining; it's very important, just as important as the antibiotic itself. He takes ultraflora, 1 pill/day.

take care,
Lymster in WA

Sorry to hear she is having so many problems.

I don't have "real little ones" anymore... but have heard of many parents giving the kids probiotics.

That may not be the problem... and may not fix her tummy pain... but if the doc approves it may be beneficial.

Is she still taking the cholestrymine? Might consider that too as a potential tummy problem??

Not that I want to compare your child to a dog... not at all...... but dogs are often given probiotics too. Just to let you know that they may be good for "all".

Hope you both are doing better soon!

Both of my children take probiotics.....however, the chewable ones

Have some sugar in them.

My children also take fluconazole twice weekly to address yeast issues.

I try really hard to minimize sugar, but they are children.

It is bad enough to have to take yucky meds every day.

My children have done alright with the yeast issues as well as probiotics.

Hugs,

Geneal

My 2 year old takes prob a refrigerated kind you get from alternative docs and he takes one pill put in a syringe of apple juice, his stomach is better than before the six months of abx. But be careful if it is two much for him he will get gastritis anyway. He takes 15 Billion org.

I have had terrible stomach pain myself but what helped me was just eating veggies for days without protein or milk. And Eggs don't hurt me.

I can't help with a childs diet but wanted you to know anyway.

My son 8 years old has Neurolyme , babs and now -after 1 year of treatment came up with bart and mucoplasma.

Do not be surprise that you might get negative test.

He came up positive for lyme and babesia microti in the begining. He was on AZITHR +MEPRON .Than BACTRIM WAS ADDED.

But after almost 10 months he was still sweatting and he had more problems.Bart came up .

So his dr added Rifampin and and got rid of bactrim. Now artemisisn was giving him more sweats.

But he said that he feels a little better.

I have been giving him Probiotics before I found out of lyme .

HE takes Florastor( c.Dificile) before sleep. He takes THERALAC with the Suggestions of DR J in CT before he sleeps 3 hrs after the antibiotics.
http://theralac.com/Buy.aspx?

That is imperative for his digestive track so he does not get yeast problems.

But he compleins once in a while...I add up the probiotics.

Myself when I have pain on my stomack -I get a few more pills of probiotics and it stops for a few days.

yes yes yes-and shame on the doctor who prescrbied the antibiotics without insisting on the probiotics, too! [tsk]

My daughter was also tested for Leaky Gut Syndrome-she follows a special gluten free diet-along with eliminating foods I thought were good for her-like bananas and chicken and pineapple and peanuts and milk. These were foods specific to her sensitivities.

Probiotics are an essential part of a protocol for Lyme disease. Not only do they replenish the healthy bacteria that may be affected by taking antibiotics. Probiotics have researched system immune benefits. Eating a diet rich in plant fiber, fruits vegetables, whole grains and beans, particularly root vegetables will also help to feed the healthy bacteria and support the gut lining.

It is important to get one with several billion organisms of various species.

I like New Chapter All Flora or Mega Flora

It is also important to take them away from antibiotics and when not feeling particularly hungry like first thing in morning.

The best probiotic, IMO, is Theralac. My 15 yr. old son has been taking it for the past two years.

I give it two hours before or after antibiotics. Hope this helps.

My 9 yr old son is in treatment and we give hime Theralac, which is a super potent probiotic (that's what I am told anyway)
and he also takes Nystatin (2 a day) to combat yeast from abx.

I would for sure start probiotics. I even spoke to the man who formulated Theralac, and it's very safe for children..that made me feel much more confident going in to it!

Wishing you health for your family,
Laura

MY kids take Bio K, it comes in little bottles which have to be refigerated. You can buy it in a case. The store actually does not have it. They have to special order it. Health stores can order this product.

We tried the pill forms, all kinds but nothing works like this one.

I see that Nancyb uses the same kind.

My son almost went for surgery to find out what was wrong with his stomach because of all the abx. One day, actually one day before surgery some cancer patient told me about this product and it is a miracle. I cancelled the surgery and tried it for two weeks. It worked. The pills just don't do it for us.

But it costs alot. Like $50.00 for a case of 15 bottles.

My kids are still on abx with no stomach issues any more.

I have been told that BioK is much better than the capsule form.

I'm surprised that BioK costs more in the US as there aren't too many things that are cheaper in Canada. Come to think of it though, our groceries are often cheaper.

I pay about $38 for a case of 15 and it is stocked in the grocery store as well as the health food stores.

But it is worth it at any price! [Smile]

AMEN!!! That's irresponsible for ANY dr to not tell a patient on long term abx to supplement with a GOOD probiotic and watch their diet.

I do hope her stomach pain resolves SOON!! Don't let her eat too many carbs and NO sugar.

My daughter has taken Acidophilus Pearls for 3 years. She was on Abx for other things besides Lyme but always on a probiotic as well. Her NP recomended these since they don't have to be refrigerated and they are very tiny and easy to swallow.

Part of out problem was traveling a lot and keeping a probitic that needed to refrigerated was a pain. My son also took these for a paracite infection she was treating and they worked well.

You can fine them at a Health store in a display on their own. She also takes Diflucan now that she is on Lyme Abx treatment.

Thank you all SO MUCH for your replies. Yes, I believe that my daughter needs to be on probiotics and diflucan as well.

I gave her half of one of my probiotics last night and she seemed to have tolerated it well. She hasn't even had a stomach ache yet today.

Geneal, I believe she sees the same LLMD that your kids go to- Dr. F in LA. I will make absolutely sure to address all these issues when I see him.

She did test + for Babs and LD, but negative for Bart. Still doesn't mean that she doesn't have it, though. I tested negative for bart and didn't start to feel better until I added Levaquin to my Abx list, since my LLMD ( who is Dr. W in TX) felt that I was infected with it anyway, despite the test results.

Thanks again to everyone who replied. It has been harder to watch my little girl go through this terrible illness than to have had it myself.

It is wonderful to have caring people out there who have shared the experience of having a child with Lyme.

Bless you all,
Stefanie
