Hey all,

I just recently started treatment for Lyme and have been taking oral Clindamycin for a week now, the past 4 days i've been taking 900mg a day and am supposed to take 900mg for 3 weeks.

Anyway, I am just flat out wiped, muscle wise and energy. Absolutely drained, is this a common ABX side effect? Especially for the amount I am taking?

Just this morning I was carrying a leaf blower in my right arm and now I can barely lift a cup of water without my arm shaking, and getting out of bed has been twice as hard.

My hunch is its just the antibiotics wiping me out and leaving me dead tired, but I just wanted to know if this was similar among the rest of us?

Thanks for any input.

Yes, it's called a Herxheimer Reaction .... it's not a side-effect, rather a die-off of bacteria.

Are you seeing an LLMD? Three weeks is not enough treatment for Lyme.

Thanks for the reply goofy,

Yes I am seeing an LLMD, once the 3 weeks is up we are going to add another antibiotic on top of the Clindamycin, he mentioned Doxy but we will see when that time comes.

How long I will be taking them in total we haven't discussed, but I believe he wants to get up to 3 at one time.

I guess I always pictured the herx reaction as diarreah, or nausea, etc...I didn't know exhaustion was a side effect. But it makes sense, I just feel flat out like a zombie.

The first few days on the antibiotic it wasn't so bad, but today the exhaustion has really kicked in. I am just drained. Can't imagine what it will be like in the weeks ahead.

Thank you for the input.

Well, eventually the herx will let up. I'm glad to hear you're seeing an LLMD and will be on it longer. [Smile]

Herxes often include exhaustion, at least for me. I get mine on regular cycles so I can plan on when I'll be feeling bad. Sometimes with starting a new med though, it can last a few weeks .... but afterward I feel better than before.

Thanks for the encouraging words guys, I do plan to stick with treatment to the fullest, looks like ill just have to cut back on my functioning level and get more rest in to accompany this exhaustion.

Clindimycin is a strong drug and you may be sensitive to it.

Convince your doctor to switch to doxycyline 200mg twice daily. You'll feel a lot better.
