I've had this tightness around my mouth and in my face on and off for years... It makes it hard to speak, especially when going out in the cold. Has anyone else had this? Kind of freaks me out...

Hi skrwolf,

When it's good and cold--far below freezing--it usually will tighten your mouth and make it hard to speak--I'm from Minnesota!

Like cj nelson, I had Bell's palsy, too. With Bell's, usually half your face (sometimes the other side, too) is paralyzed. Typically your eye and mouth droop on one side.

I blubbed and slurred for 4 months.

You may have ear pain and hearing problems. It's miserable. Mine lasted 4 months. It is a heavy neurological problem and one of the signs of Lyme.

skrworlf - I don't have this myself. I do have TMJ.

But on the "Under our Skin" there's a girl on there who says that she has this and it feels like she has tape across her mouth so it's hard to say anything. Your post just reminded me of it.

Skywolf,

Does it sound like you may have Bell's?

I forgot to tell you that my face felt funny when I tried to talk and people looked at me weird.

Thanks for your responses (would love to hear more!). In 1998, my right eye felt droopy. This has never really gone away. I think that Dr. H characterized it as a palsy incident. Since I started Bicillin, the whole right side of my face feels droopy. I would assume that this is a herx reaction of Bell's Palsy? The mouth tightness started at the same time in 1998 and has also been pretty much constant. Maybe it is Bell's Palsy related?

Wow - look what I just found on www.bellspalsy.ws?

RESIDUAL EFFECTS
Eye appears smaller
Blink remains incomplete or infrequent
Tearing abnormalities
Asymmetrical smile
Mouth pulls up and outward
Sinus problems
Nose runs during physical exertion
Post paralytic hemifacial spasm
Hypertonic muscles
Co-contracting muscles
Synkinesis (oral/ocular well known, but can affect any muscle group)
Sweating while eating or during physical exertion
Muscles become more flaccid when tired, or during minor illness
Muscles stiffen when exposed to cold, when tired, or during illness

Maybe it's the leftover from Bell's Palsy?
