400 unit gel capsules of vitamin D3, cholecalciferol. Poke a hole in the capsule with a pin and squeeze the oil into yogurt or some such food. You can also give them a teaspoon or two of cod liver oil every day. and let them get 15 minutes of sun whenever possible without sunscreen.

You are not going to make anyone toxic on 400 units per day, including children. The toxicity cases I have read about have occurred through improper dilution of the Vit. D that is added to milk.
Frame your consideration of intake with the study by Holick that demonstrates that 20 minutes in a bathing suit at the peak of summer at midday will produce 20,000 IUs under the skin.
Different people use different amounts in a 24 hr period, if high amts of supplements are to be used it is advisable to follow levels, but it is a needle stick, not fun for kids. Better than a mercury or aluminum containing vaccination though.
