My daughter who is Mentally impaired and has Autism has received a positive Lyme ELISA and she also received a Negative IgG Western Blot and a positve IgM Western Blot from one hospital. The IgM bands that came up reactive are 23, 39 an 41.
Her infectious disease Dr. prescribed Doxycycline 100mg twice daily for one month. He didn't believe she had Lyme but did treat her and ran another ELISA at his hospital which came back negative. He then ran another ELISA after the 30 days of Doxy and that also came back negative. Even though he asked the lab to run a Western Blot they didn't because their ELISA came back negative.
My daughter improved tremendously after the 30 days of Doxy and is scheduled for a Brain MRI in July. He is not going to treat her any further because he believes the Western Blot that I first received from another hospital was a false positive.
I should also mention that my daughter developed Bells Palsy prior to all this treatment which is the reason we even tested for Lyme in the first place. Because my daughter cannot speak we are uncertain of all her pains and I am finding this incredibly hard to find out if she does have Lyme or not. I need to find out if she should receive more antibiotics or a different type of antibiotics or where we should go from here.
Her primary care doctor and her infectious disease doctor feel she is negative and will not prescribe any other meds at this time. Her history includes a fever and tiredness for a week in November 2007 followed by loss of appetite and psychosis in January 2008 with a hospital stay at a Psychiatric hospital for 2 weeks and then developed Bells Palsy in March 2008. One month of doxycycline between April and May 2008.
The past 6 months or so she has not been herself, she resorted to self abbusive behavior of hitting herself in her head and we had to use a soft shell safety helmet for her, but after the doxy, she has almost returned to herself.
I know this is a very complicated case because she cannot tell us all her symptoms but I'm searching for answers. Please help.
