Hi, I have posted a few times on this board. I have probably had lyme for years but have just been dx around Mar 2008. (No thanks to my neuro [Mad] )

Well, since then I have been on
amox 500 mg 3x day for 30 days.

IV rocephin for 28 days

Ceftin 2x day for 30 days. And still tested positive bands IGM 23, 41
IGG 66 last week.

So now my LLMD put me on doxy 100 mg 2x day.
Doesn't this seem like a low dose? I know he was worried about sun exposure, but still will this do anything?

I did just get a PCR test done as well last week and am waiting for results. I see him in 30 days to go from here.

Should I question this dose or just take it at this point, considering the side effects on higher doses?

Thanks,

Sometimes they start out with 200mg/day (bacteriostatic dose) and work up to higher doses.

I believe that 300mg/day is bactericidal, but likely depending on body weight most seem to go to 400mg/day.

I started on 200/day & Herxed at 300/day.

LLMD may just have you on a holding dose until results come in.

My family is all on 100mg of doxy twice a day too (which we've been on for like 9 months now). I didn't think much of it until another member pointed out most patients take anywhere from 300-600 mg a day of doxy.

I'm wondering the same thing and maybe that's why we are sort of at a standstill with this disease? I never thought about that, but we were on biaxin 500 mg twice daily and tetracycline 500mg 3 times day before.

I have been feeling very bad recently and maybe this is why? I'm glad you asked that question regarding the doxy.

Also, if anyone has a link to research that has guidelines on the recommended doxy dose I would greatly appreciate it because if 200 mg daily is too low, then I'd like to have something to take with me to my doc appt.

Thanks for anyone's help and sorry I don't have answer for you Coffeebehm.

Thanks for everyones reply! I really hate this disease because everything is just a big question? The dx,symptoms, course of treatment...

Even if the PCR test comes back positive, I really do not know what that will change, considering I have a consistent positive WB which is unusual in itself, considering how faulty the test is....

My husband wanted to pay out of pocket for the PCR just in the odds that the antigen would show up, he thinks it will give me peace of mind...

Peace of mind of what? Considering there is no way of knowing for sure what symptoms are Lyme related, and what symptoms are not?

I think that is the hardest part for me..but for now I just keep trying to convince myself that at some point I can be cured..

Well, enough rambling...
Again thanks for your posts [Smile]

I am on my second month of treatment, and my doc started me at 400mg with the Doxy, sorry I don't have an answer for you I figured I would just let you know that.

Most of what I see, 400mg is the place to be so you may want to discuss it with your doc. Maybe after all the others ones you have taken 200mg is enough? Still I would find out, because you don't want to take to little.

Hope you find the answer.

Are you certain you are seeing a real LLMD? That is a low dose of doxy, not enough to kill the bacteria, just hold it at bay, which is not what you need at this point.

PCR's are highly unreliable, just as a FYI for your hubby.

LLMD's treat based on symptoms, tests, and your history. They don't require a positive test to treat if your history and symptoms point to Lyme.

Hi, I have been on doxy for almost 5 months now.

I started at 200 mg a day but was switched over to 400 a day.

He told me he(LLMD) wanted to start me off low so I would not start off herxing like crazy. He wanted to ramp up my dose.

After 2 months my treatment fell flat. Meaning I was not getting better or worse. That was time to ramp it up.

Now at 4oo a day I can feel that it penetrates the brain . I did not feel this way at 200. Yes, I hexed a little but it is not the same.

400 is a good dose to be at. Yes, you herx like crazy but I also had 5 days at 80 % after having lyme 6 + years. That was great . Now I am back to herxing again. 400 definitely prnetrates CNS you feel the difference.

Look at and print out Dr. Burrascanno 's treatment guide for doxy dosage. You need 300-400 to penetrate CNS.

Yes, 200 is good to start out with but,it must eventually be ramped up or changed to something else.

Best Teresa
