Well, I gotta thank all of those who sent me the coffee ennema recipe...without going into to much detail I will say that it was toxic build up that had me feeling so poorly...I was actually worried for a while that my drugs were failing...I can say to all of you that are doing rife or EMEM you will feel alot better after one of these (within miniuts)..I would even go so far as to say that those of you on heavy orals or I.V. abx should give it a try..It wiped out my depression almost instantly...headaches and nausea, within a half hour..It makes me wonder if the depression some of us suffer isnt just toxins...Meaning maybe its not really a symptom of lyme, just a result of toxins building up after die off. Just a thought..I know this is a creepy topic, but i really feel that if you are going to do rife with any sort of frequency this is almost a must, If you plan on feeling halfway human...Since i have been cleaned out I have felt alot better..I also have had no elbow pain since rife !!! I will be going down the week of the 11th for another couple of rounds ...keep you posted...greg

... But I've found the Starbuck's enemas to be pretty pricey, Rocephin might be cheaper. And when you buy a cappuchino and head to the bathroom with it the yuppies look at you funny....

Greg, Thanx 4 this topic! I mentioned this yesterday. As uncomfortable as this subject is, YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! My friend was going to a Clinic there in Scottsdale for Cancer & he had to do coffee enamas every night B-4 bed.
CHARLIE, You made my day! You kill me!
I'm Sorry we didn't get to meet @ Garcia's; you & Jenny could've added to my Laugh-Lines!

Greg, you are my hero! Thanks for being brave enough to post about coffee enemas. I have also used those for detoxification with great success. I think use of the coffee enemas, combined with "poor woman's saunas" (extremely warm baths with epsom salts) is how I've been able to withstand some heavy Rife sessions. Organic coffee is also my choice.

I'll add one note: if you tend to have sensitivity or inflammation in the large intestine, it helps to dilute the coffee with some chamomile tea. It's very soothing and doesn't detract from the effectiveness of the coffee enema.

If you are detoxing, which you all are if on anything from antioxidants to thinners to abx, once in a while you should do a colonic.
You will be very, very surprised at the "liver dumps" you will have come out and you will never wonder again why you feel so horrible. It's worth every penny of it; then follow it with coffee enemas. But do get the main stuff out that sits way up in about 30 some feet of intestines!! Sorry about the reality - but that's it. You cannot heal, you cannot absorb your food and vitamins and minerals, probiotics (acidophilus, etc.) or anything else for that matter, unless you get the colon clean. You will also stop your many allergic reactions to many things. I REPEAT:
You can hardly heal with a dirty intestinal tract. You don't need to do it often, but if you have never done it, do it atleast once or twice. Get well!

Charlie,

As I am on Cipro, my caffeine is limited. Since you are apparently somewhat of a connoisseur on this subject, perhaps you could recommend a good decaf. Also, these keets have stopped my oral intake of alcohol, so I was just wondering if you South Texas fellows have tried any tequila in the mix?

Good info Greg and other. I can hardly wait for the presentation of our Gettysburg Support group, Greg. This will be great.

Also, my youngest daughter lives in CO. When my husband went our to see her graduate as a massage therapist, she told him she wanted him to take a colonic. Well, unfortunately, he had just started doxy at this point and was having the runs. I told her he could not stand that at the present. We all got a big kick out of that. No way to spend a vacation.

The use of coffee enemas was apparently originated by Max Gerson, M.D. (1958) as documented in his book "A Cancer Therapy: Results of 50 cases"; Totality Books, Del Mar, California.
The Gerson Institute of Bonita, California, at www.gerson.org, is run by his daughter Carlotte Gerson and here is the pertinent quotation on page 8 from their brochure "Healing Incurable Illness":

DETOXIFICATION

"A very important part of the Gerson Therapy is frequent detoxification of the tissues and blood. This is accomplished through a variety of means, first and foremost through the use of coffee enemas. The scientific basis for the use of coffee enemas is well documented and can be obtained from the Gerson Institute.
Patients report that the enemas decrease pain and hasten healing. Biologically, enzyme systems of the gut wall and liver are stimulated and bile flow is increased. This has been shown to enhance the body's ability to eliminate toxic residues from environmental, chemotherapeutic and other sources. Tumor and other diseased tissue is also more rapidly eliminated as it is broken down."

SOURCE OF ORGANIC COFFEE

The Gerson Institute recommends only organic coffee be used in this part of their therapeutic protocol and lists the following distributor who retails it at $5.25 per pound:

Harbour House Coffee Company, P.O. Box 1879, Clearlake Oaks, California 95423; Phone 1-800-541-4699 (I called today 3/1/02 = disconnected)

I have not examined the scientific data that the Gerson Institute mention in support of the application of coffee enemas and simply post this in case someone wishes to pursue this less than exquisite therapy. However, if the therapy does help eliminate Lyme Disease+co-infection-generated neurotoxins, it would be interesting to hear comments on this discussion board from those that have had success. Perhaps we may need a new thread on the subject!!!

And Lonestar, don't stop posting as you never know what information may help a given LD sufferer out there.

Hi Tickster,
As mortified as I am to admit publicly that I resort to these, they have proven very helpful. Because I am on some heavy duty antibiotics and other medications that adversly affect my liver and gall bladder, I have become much more open to remedies that are non-toxic or that are are detoxifying, especially when they are affordable and they work.

Coffee enemas work in the sigmoid colon. The caffeine from the coffee is absorbed directly via the portal vein where it goes directly to the liver. (It does not go into systemic circulation.) It has a strong detoxifying effect on the liver. According to Dr. Sherry Rogers, M.D. in her book, Wellness Against All Odds, " There are reports in the scientific literature to verify this [detoxifying effect on the liver] and also that coffee actually increases the amount of glutathione-S-transferase which is necessary for the body to detoxify chemicals and toxins. As you recall, this enzyme is necessary to form the proteins that hook onto or conjugate nasty chemicals in the body. By attaching to them, they are then able to drag them out through the liver bild ducts, gall bladder, and into the colon to get rid of them (detoxify) forever."

I am including some links and text below for anyone who is interested in reading more about it. The last link and text includes a recipe which slightly differs from Dr. Rogers, but I can post hers if anyone is actually interested. http://www.whale.to/cancer/detox.html
Cancer, Cleansing and Detoxification.

One Answer To Cancer by Dr Kelley Ch. 5 Body Detoxification

Dr William D. Kelley, DDS, MS:

"A coffee enema should be given every morning for one month; then twice a week for eight months. The coffee enema is very stimulating to the liver, and is the greatest aid in eliminating its toxic poisons."

"The word detox does not appear in the main textbook on cancer or the main medical textbook...the word in medicine refers to heroin addicts and getting them off heroin...they do not conceive that their are such things as toxins created by a tumour...where do they think it all goes?"-----Ralph Moss

Dr Jethro Kloss, MD Back to Eden (Page 862)

(here are many reasons for doing enemas, including)"...enemas taken with only a relatively small amount of fluid in order to cleanse the rectum and lower colon; astringent enemas, taken to relieve inflammation in diarrhea, dysentery, etc.; nourishing enemas, given in wasting diseases, unconsciousness, and other conditions where it becomes necessary to administer food by rectum....(and) enemas taken to thoroughly cleanse the entire length of the colon'

James A. Balch, MD. (Prescripton for Nutritional Healing Pages 323,324)

.......cleansing enemas are not retained or held in the body; they are used to flush out the colon...(A coffee enema) is beneficial in treatment.. .because it stimulates the liver to excrete toxins or 'poison bile.' It's called a retention enema because it is held in or retained for fifteen minutes."

Dr Patrick Quillin, PhD, RD (Beating Cancer With Nutrition)

"enemas are one of the oldest healing modalities in human literature...Coffee enemas have been in the Merck Medical Manual for decades, until 1977, when editors of the manual claimed that this revered therapy was eliminated for 'lack of space' in the new manuscript. The reality is that coffee enemas became the focal point in criticizing alternative cancer therapies".

Dr Max Gerson, M.D. (A Cancer Therapy)

"In as much as detoxification of the body is of the greatest importance, especially in the beginning, it is absolutely necessary to administer frequent enemas, day and night (on the average, we give coffee enemas every four hours, day and night, and even more frequently against severe pain, nausea, general nervous tension and depression)...Some patients take enemas every two hours, or even more frequently, during the first days of the treatment. More advanced cases are severely intoxicated and the absorption of the tumor masses, glands, etc., intoxicates them even more. Many years ago I lost several patients by coma hepaticum, since I did not know, and therefore neglected, the vital importance of frequent and regularly continued elimination of poisonous substances, with the help of juices, enemas, etc."

Dr Alan Nittler, M.D. (A New Breed of Doctor)

"(Coffee enemas for gallbladder problems)..'The coffee enema causes a relaxation in the liver-gallbladder region which gives rapid relief of pain. If you are lucky, you could even pass a gallstone or two. Maybe more. If you are not lucky, the pain returns and you must repeat the process until help can arrive for more definitive care. In either event, you have jeopardized nothing. This is the one and only time I recommend coffee. As a drink, it is a no-no for hypoglycemics, which applies to most people".

"Some metabolic therapists insist on daily enemas, including coffee enemas (excellent detoxifiers of the liver) in order to cleanse the system.."-----Dr Harold W Harper, MD ( How You Can Beat the Killer diseases 169)

Dr John Sessions, DO (Coping With Cancer page 29) The coffee enema stimulates the liver, alkalines the duodenum, and helps eliminate toxic wastes. It dissolves encrusted wastes that have accumulated along the colon walls, and the caffeine content encourages peristaltic muscle contraction to loosen deposits which may show up as 'ropes' of mucus. Gradually, as protein metabolism improves, the colon's muscle tone also improves and bowel movements become normal without the aid of an enema."

Dr Elson Haas, M.D. (Staying Healthy With Nutrition)

"During a basic dietary detox programme, other, more subtle colon stimuli are usually used to enhance colon action. These may include herbal or pharmaceutical laxatives, fiber and colon detox supplements, such as psyllium seed husks alone or mixed with other agents, for example, aloe vera powder, bentonite clay, and acidophilus culture. Enemas using water, herbs, or even diluted coffee (stimulates liver cleansing) may also be used".

Dr Linda Rector Page, ND, PhD (Healthy Healing Page 32)

Coffee enemas have become standard m natural healing when liver and blood related cancers are present. Caffeine used in this way stimulates the liver and gallbladder to remove toxins, open bile ducts, encourage increased peristaltic action, and produce necessary enzyme activity for healthy red blood cell formation and oxygen uptake"

THE COFFEE ENEMA-A LIVER CLEANSER
Based upon Dr. Gerson's work.
More information is available in his book:
A Cancer Therapy, Results in Fifty Cases
Coffee enemas rapidly help remove toxins from the liver. They often provide quick relief when one is fatigued, sleepy, has headaches, or is just feeling poorly. They also help against spasms, precordial (heart, throat, chest) pain and difficulties resulting from the sudden withdrawal of all intoxicating sedation.
A coffee enema, when done properly, causes the liver to produce more bile, opens the bile ducts and causes the bile to flow. In this process, a toxic liver can dump many of its toxins into the bile and get rid of them in just a few minutes. This often gives great relief to all parts of the body, and often makes the difference between lying down feeling miserable and feeling good and being active. Coffee enemas are also effective in relieving pain. Patients with cancer, for example, may achieve relief from pain even when drugs failed.
At the start of the treatment and during "flare-ups," the bile contains poisons, produces spasms in the duodenum and small intestines, and causes some overflow into the stomach. This may cause feelings of nausea, which could result in the vomiting of the bile. If this happens, drinking a good quantity of strong peppermint tea will help wash out the bile from the stomach and bring relief.
It is interesting to note that drinking a cup of coffee has an entirely different effect from that of using it as a cleansing enema. Drinking coffee causes the following problems: increases reflex response; lowers blood pressure; increases heart rate; causes insomnia and heart palpitations; over stimulates the adrenals; irritates the stomach; and leaves a toxic residue in the body. A coffee enema when done properly will not produce these effects.
Preparing the Coffee Enema
Add 3 heaping tablespoons of ground coffee (organically grown coffee is absolutely essential*) to 1 quart of water (preferably distilled). Let it boil lightly for 3 minutes, then simmer for a total of 20 minutes. Keep lid on. Strain and use at body temperature.
The body should be lying down on its right side, with both legs drawn close to the abdomen. Breathe deeply, in order to suck in the greatest amount of fluid into the necessary parts of the colon. It also helps to let all of the air out of the lungs and suck the gut in and out while in this position.
The fluid should be retained for 12 to 15 minutes. It helps to have a clock or watch in view. Dr. Gerson found that all the caffeine is absorbed from the fluid within 12 minutes. The caffeine goes through the hemorrhoidal veins directly into the portal veins and into the liver.
*The chemicals found in commercially grown coffee could damage the liver when used as a coffee enema. Use ONLY organically grown coffee!

Thanx, Marnie & Tickster! That was a great article!
GG, I did colonics yrs. ago. The Scientist I talked to this week told me EXACTLY what you just said...I CAN'T/WON'T BE WELL UNTIL MY COLON & LIVER ARE CLEAN! My Herbalist has pounded that into my head since '95, but my digestive system won't cooperate, no how, no way! I've done Dr. Christopher's "Incurables" Program many times, but the colon cleanse couldn't keep up with the die-off I was getting...it's a vicious cycle...the toxins from the die-off HAVE to be eliminated! I've been told for yrs.=once for every time you eat a full meal...I don't come anywhere close to that! Guess that's why I'm sick, huh?
MammaLyme, Oh', Between you & Charlie...tsk,tsk...this board's like a comedy show! God knows we need to laugh...!!

A question for all,
I know this sounds really dumb, but doesnt this require a partner for assistance here? How would someone all alone be able to manage all this? How would that work? The more I read on this the more sense it makes when you keep everything in context with the total program. At least I cant imagine it would hurt our treatment at all. So what is the secret of one person households?--just don--

Just Don, I assume you are asking if we have help with the enema. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I definitely don't *want* anyone to help me with an enema...not that anyone ever offered to help anyway. You just put the cooled down coffee in the enema bag, insert the tube where the sun don't shine, and after holding it as long as you can, let nature take her course. Ain't independence grand?

I thought I was going to die after giving myself a coffee enema. I was so toxic that it released all the toxins throughout my body. My skin was burning, mouth and organs. I could not eat or drink water. I passed intestinal lining for 2 days after doing it where the toxins burned me inside. I probably should have had a colonic first then the coffee enema. No doubt they are excellent, but mine set me back a long way as my stomach is still recovering after 2 months. Just be careful because it is a very powerful detox!

Katydid, I was actually told by north* way back when that decaf coffee is fine and will work quite well. I didn't have the guts to try it, but I commend those who do. Gerson was a smart guy & it makes sense as an intervention.

Hi All who were brave enough to post about this. It is nice to know that others out there in Lyme Land have also felt helped by this "unique detox" method. I was so mortified when I first posted about this. I'm so glad that you all are supportive about whatever works for the individual. I would have written the rest up last night, but as I was reading the thread on this topic, I had the giggles too bad to try and compose anything. Thank you all for your good humor!

I thought I would try and share some of Dr. {MD) Sherry Rogers' information about this topic. The idea behind the coffee retention enema is that it acts in the very last part of the colon, the sigmoid colon. The caffeine in the coffee is absorbed via the portal vein and goes directly into the enterohepatic systems which takes it to the liver where it makes the liver and gall bladder dump out their toxins. The caffeine never actually enters the systemic blood circulation at all. (While you might feel a bit wired or jittery from this the very first time you try it, it's not likely that if you make it according to her or to Gerson's recipes that you will continue to feel that way for very long.)

According to Dr. Rogers, the caffeine in the coffee also contains alkaloids that stimulate the production of glutathione-S-transferase, which is an enzyme used by the liver to make the detox pathways run. This enzyme is necessary to form the proteins that hook onto (or "conjugate") those nasty chemicals in the body so the enzymes pull them out through the liver, bile ducts, gall bladder so that they exit the body.

She discusses Dr. Gerson and Dr. Kelley's many contributions and says that this method of detox has been around for many years and that it was even included in the Merck Manual up until 1977 when it was removed for lack of space because there were so many new drugs on the market by then.

Dr. Roger's recipe is 2 flat tablespoons of coffee per quart of water, boiled for 5 minutes. She recommends adding one tablespoon of unsulfured molasses for each quart of coffee solution. The molasses is not supposed to be a problem for Candida or yeast the way it is used here. The molasses aids in retention, since you want to be able to retain a half quart at a time and to hold it for 10 minutes. The molasses does make it easier to last the full ten minutes without as much discomfort.

She comments on the saftely of this process and mentions that all of the important vitamins, minerals and electrolytes have already been absorbed higher up in the small bowel and upper areas of the colon. The coffee here stays in the sigmoid (Ss") portion, so it is not considered a colonic or a high enema, and it does not wash out the protective IgA or as much of the mucous layer covering the intestinal mucosa. To keep it from being a high enema or a colonic, she advises that you do NOT exceed 1/2 quart of coffee at a time. She recommends that you used the coffee at body temperature. "It should be the same temperature as a baby's bottle" or slightly cooler. She also warns us not to hang the enema bag too high (like from a shower head.) She mentions hanging it at waist level so that the coffee will flow very gently and not with force.

Dr. Sherry Rogers also advises that organic coffee is best, but she also says that for the short amount of time, any caffeinated coffee is OK. (Folger's red label, for example.) She does stress that it is best to have reverse osmosis or spring water, especially if one is chemically sensitive. If you have to use city water, she advises boiling it for ten minutes first, to "boil off the chlorine" before making the coffee. (Chlorine has been linked to cancer.) She also recommends making it in a stainless steel or glass coffee maker, but not anything aluminum to cook it in.

Thanks to others posting here, I'm beginning to see the wisdom in going for a high colonic occasionally to speed up total detox. Knowing how much detox has helped me personally, from the coffee to Questran, detoxing is something I am really interested in pursuing (provided I can get over the fear factor).

Hi LymeX2, Thank-You 4 sharing your experience. I'm so toxic, a coffee enema would send me back to the Stone Age! When it comes to Detox, I guess I better stick with baby steps...

Lonestar, thanks for doing such a great job of synthesizing Dr. Rogers' info about coffee enemas -- I was going to do the same thing last night (although probably not as well as you) but got tired.

Jen13, I have a LOT of respect for North* but I don't see how de-caf can work just as effectively as the full caff enema since (at least according to Dr. Rogers and the other authorities), it is the caffeine and the alkaloids it contains which do the trick...maybe you can contact North* and ask him to clarify. Perhaps even the decaf contains some alkaloids that stimulate the production of glutathione. That's just a guess...

At any rate, Dr. Rogers reassures us that the caffeine does not go into systemic circulation so it should not be a problem for those who have to reduce their oral caffeine intake. In her book, she describes how she was extremely afraid to do the enemas because she is severely allergic to caffeine -- but she had no problem from doing the enemas. If a person in worried about it, they could try a decaf version first and then subsequently try using full caffeine coffee but with less coffee or more diluted perhaps. It would be a great experiment, eh?

Here is an article from my favorite info website -- re detoxification -- colon and the rest............

Detoxification
By Ted H Spence, DDS, ND, PhD/DSc, MPH

Introduction:

Detoxification comes in many forms and refers to many different programs that cleanse the body of toxins. Today, our environment is toxic and the foods we eat, even the air we breathe and the water we drink is laden with chemicals foreign to our system. Therefore, everyone is undergoing some type of detoxification to maintain life and health. Although basic detoxification begins with diet, detox programs may include nutritional fortification for the liver, lungs, kidneys, bowels and blood. We will soon see why these organs are so important in detoxification. Detoxification for the body may refer to the cleansing of the bowels, kidneys, lungs, the liver or the blood, since these are the organs involved in detoxification of chemicals and toxins from the body. The liver acts as an ``in-line'' filter for the removal of foreign substances and wastes from the blood. The kidneys filter wastes from the blood into the urine, while the lungs remove volatile gases as we breathe.

Our body is designed to utilize natural substances, which includes foods, herbs and phytochemicals. Any foreign substance will serve as a stimulus to our immune system, which has the function of removing these substances. Although the toxicity of a chemical may vary, it is the job of the liver to reduce toxins into compounds that the body can safely handle and eliminate through the kidneys (as urine), skin (as sweat), lungs (as expelled air) and bowels (as feces). Maintaining these eliminative organs in good working order is essential for one's good health to continue.

While there are many detoxification programs available, they differ in their actions and their intent. Some detoxification programs (DP) work only with the bowels, others may cleanse the liver or the blood, and others may aid the kidneys or the skin in their functions. By combining these detox programs into a total health program, one can effectively restore their health to an optimal level and look younger in the process. When the body can eliminate toxins, then health is restored and energy and vigor are revitalized. Many different approaches to detoxification and wellness will work, even though they attack the problem at different levels. Any program that augments detoxification will improve health. Other factors must be considered in detoxification, like nutrition, water, and exercise, rest, sunshine, and fresh air.

Detoxification Diets:

Detoxification diets help the body to eliminate toxins in many ways. First, natural vegetarian diets include the fiber needed for stimulating good bowel eliminate. They also contain the proper amounts of vitamins that feed and nourish the bowels and the liver, as well as other eliminative organs. They also include a valuable source of enzymes since most vegetarian diets are eaten raw. The elimination of meat from the diet for a short period enhances detoxification because meat is so difficult to digest and requires many enzymes for its digestion. Therefore, vegetarian diets are cleansing diets and aid the body in elimination of toxins.

Of course, changing diets and lifestyle is easier said than done for some people. Many people want health and will go to any length to improve their health, including dietary changes. But there are others who do not want to change their life style for anything. These people will be difficult to motivate and will not stick with the detox programs for one day. They may not want to give up their sodas, or their cigarettes, their beer or their coffee. They may make a few changes, like drinking more water, or they may give up completely in a very short notice. Our way of eating has been cultivated over many years and will not change over night. But to those who do want better health and do not want to rely on pills/drugs for their existence, nutritional changes will be welcomed, especially when they start feeling better and having more energy.

Diets are very important and are usually the basis for any detox program, whether it is herbs, cleansing or other detox programs.[i] Detox diets will generally eliminate trigger foods, which may cause many problems with digestion and elimination. Foods like wheat (glutens) and dairy (milk, cheese) are often the cause of allergies. Sugar is eliminated because of its ``empty calories'' and tendency to produce hypoglycemia. Meats are eliminated because they may contain hormones, antibiotics and are difficult to digest. Caffeine is wise to avoid, since it has many ill effects on the body's digestion. Refined, processed and junk foods are also out for any detox program to work.

Herbal Detoxification:

Generic diets for detoxification are good, but may not stimulate the liver, lungs or the kidneys as much as one would like. Therefore, herbal cleanses are indicated when we want to hone our cleanse to a ``sharp edge'' and be organ specific. Of course, herbs are foods too and provide one with vitamins, minerals and enzymes for excellent nutrition. Herbs are powerful, because they may be combined together to fortify those herbs that aid specific organs. For example, herbal combinations that aid the liver may be found in many organic food stores. The list below shows how herbal combinations help the various organs.

Herbal Combinations:

Liver:

LIV-A Dandelion, red beet, liverwort, parsley, horsetail, birch leaves, chamomile, blessed thistle, black cohosh, angelica, gentian, goldenrod

Kidneys: Uva ursi, parsley, dandelion, juniper berries JP-X Parsley, uva ursi, marshmallow, ginger, goldenseal, dong quai, cedar berries

Lungs: LH Comfrey, marshmallow, mullein, slippery elm, senega, Chinese ephedra

While herbs may be taken at any time, they are best for detoxification purposes when they are used with a good diet also. It does not make any sense to take herbs to cleanse the liver if the bowels are clogged with junk or refined foods, since the liver dumps its toxins into the bowels. And while detoxification diets are effective by themselves, they may be reinforced and speeded up with herbs, which stimulate the eliminative organs.

Herbs may be used as teas, powders or extracts. Powders are usually encapsulated for easier swallowing, but are best when taken with meals and digestive enzymes. Extracts may be used when specific herbs are needed, but may be extracted with alcohol, which we need to avoid. Herbal teas are easily made and easily taken all throughout the day. They are mild and gentle and sometimes refreshing and sometimes bitter. Experimentation may be in order until one develops the right tea to drink. Herbal teas is a topic in itself, since there are so many and different ways to make them.

Example Herbal Cleanse:

Rising: Drink a glass of lemon water or Drink a glass of water with added: one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and one teaspoon of blackstrap molasses

Morning: drink a glass of water with psyllium husk powder (follow with another glass of water Meals: take 2-3 multi-digestive enzymes

Take liver herbs

In Between Meals: drink herbals teas, which support the liver

Dandelion/licorice/ginger/fennel

Note: Following a good diet is mandatory for herbs to work optimally. See section on diets for detox.

Skin Cleansing:

Detoxification should include some type of skin cleansing, because our skin it one of our best eliminative organs. Heavy metals are actually released through the skin's pores when we sweat. Sauna baths and steam rooms are great for removing toxins from the skin and regenerating one's health and energy. It has been documented that our skin's sweat glands when combined can perform as much detoxification as one (or both) kidneys. Therefore, it is very important to support our skin for detoxification to be maximal. If our kidneys are damaged, then helping the skin will help the kidneys ... indirectly, but effectively.

Good skin care is in order, if one's health is to benefit, also. Using chemicalized skin care products is not wise, even though they are cheaper. These chemicals may be absorbed into our circulation and provide more ``toxins'' for our liver to deal with. We are not made out of cast iron, and even the chemicals in our soaps and shampoos will make a difference with our health. Most people do not ``see'' the ill effects of these subtle chemicals, because their liver is able to metabolize them. But, individuals who are environmentally toxic will see a great change in their health when using natural soaps and shampoos. We should take their advice and use only natural skin care products also.

Cleansing our skin is rather simple. First, we need to bathe daily using natural soaps. Then we need to care for the skin by using only natural oils and products of natural origin. Even the clothes we wear can make a big difference in our health. Synthetic fibers do not absorb sweat (toxins), while natural fibers, like cotton, will absorb toxins. Dry skin brushing helps in removing the outer dead skin layers and keeps the pores open. Another good method of skin brushing is with vigorous toweling off after bathing. Towel roughly until the skin is slightly red. Change towels often because they will contain toxins.

Good skin care also requires good nutrition.[ii] Since our skin is mainly fat, we need high quality fats and oil from natural sources to give our skin health. Butter and olive oil are two excellent natural oils, which keep the skin in good condition. As always, the fats/oils should be natural ... only.

Detoxification Baths:

Use 1/2 cup of baking soda or use 1/2 cup of Epsom salt or use 1/2 cup of sea salt. Soak for 15-20 minutes and then scrub the skin gently with soap on a natural fiber. Within a few minutes the water will turn murky and ``dirty.'' The darkness to the water is heavy metals coming out of the skin (aluminum and mercury). Do this once a week during detox and once a month for maintenance.

Juice Fasting:

Fasting with vegetable juices can be another excellent way to develop good health and cleanse the body of toxins. Juices, minus their pulp (fiber), contain an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and enzymes. When the pulp is not added, one is able to drink more juice than they are able to eat. For example, one can easily consume the juice of several heads of lettuce in one sitting, but may not be able to eat the lettuce whole. This allows the body to get an abundance of nutrients with minimal processing (digestion). Fasting on mono-juices also allows the body proper time to process these juices and helps to preserve our valuable digestive enzymes.

Juice fasting has helped many people over come serious diseases like cancer, because it gave them optimal nutrition and allowed the body to cleanse itself of toxins. [According to many nutritionists, cancer is merely a toxic condition.] With some juicers, the pulp is discarded, but it may be saved and added back for fiber (not too much). Juices contain good sources of antioxidants and enzymes, both of which are needed for cleansing and eliminating toxins. Juices are also easy to digest and help those with digestive problems.

Flora:

Our bowel flora is also important for detoxification and normal health. Probiotics is the term given to the normal bowel flora, which are taken as supplements. It has been found that these normal flora actually defend our body from the pathogenic species of bacteria and perform many vital functions, such as detoxification of toxic chemicals and making valuable vitamins (mainly the B vitamins). When our normal flora are present they secrete mediators in which the pathogenic forms cannot grow. But the reverse is also true, that when the pathogenic forms take over, they will exclude the normal flora with their toxins.

Many scientists feel that it is the toxins secreted from the pathogens and not the pathogens themselves that create disease. The ability of all bacteria to change and grow under specific conditions of their immediate environment is called pleiomorphism. Cell wall deficient forms are ``bacteria'' which lack a defined cell wall, yet have all the specifications of being bacterial-like. Even viruses have been found to exhibit morphological forms, which resemble bacteria and fungus. While this is not widely accepted by modern medical scientists, it hass been proven beyond a shadow of doubt by eminent scientists, like Virginia Livingston Wheeler, Irene Diller, and Royal Rife. Their microscopic studies have revealed that bacteria and viruses and fungus may be all different forms of the same organism, differing only by the environment in which they are grown.

Antibiotics kill off the good bacteria as well as the bad and allow the bad to repopulate and develop antibiotic resistance. Natural forms of antibiotics are better, since they do not kill off the good bacteria with the bad and do not allow drug'' resistance to take place. Garlic, for example, is perhaps, 200 times more effective against pathogens than most antibiotics today. And it does not produce antibiotic resistance forms, which is a danger to all our health. As antibiotics become more widely used, more antibiotic resistant forms will be encountered. Herbal antiseptics and anti-bacterial tonics are far better and less dangerous to our over-all health, because they do not kill of the good bacteria with the bad.

Replacing our natural flora is a good step for preventing disease and keeping our bowels healthy and populated with normal flora. Taking probiotics containing Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidus can help us in our detox program and also in repopulating the gut after a cleanse. Our normal healthy flora should be a part of any detoxification program.

Antioxidants:

The use of antioxidants, like vitamins A, E and especially C, are very essential for detoxification since they are involved with the detoxification of toxins. Antioxidants are involved with helping cells to neutralize free radicals that can cause mutations and cellular damage. As these free radicals are neutralized, the antioxidant vitamins will be used and exhibit low levels. Vitamin A and E are fat soluble and will be found in our fat tissues/stores, but vitamin C is water soluble and will be found mainly in our skin (between the cells according to Reams). Vitamin C is also involved with many other important bodily functions, like collagen formation, wound healing, energy production and fighting off colds (viruses).

The function of antioxidants is so important that any deficiency of them will be seen as catastrophic to one's health. When our antioxidants are low, energy is not available and detoxification cannot take place in a normal fashion. Therefore, toxins accumulate or are stored until they can be processed. The liver and many other organs are compromised in their functions when antioxidants are low. Just the lack of energy is enough to cause the body to have compromised or poor health, because it is energy that is required for the removal of toxins and wastes. Vitamin C should be taken with bioflavinoids to ensure that all the components of the vitamin C complex are taken together, since they work together. Pure ascorbic acid is called vitamin C, but does little by itself. We tend to think that ascorbic acid as vitamin C, but it is only part of the vitamin C complex. Vitamin C is very essential to any detoxification program, because that is what the body uses for energy to process and eliminate these toxic wastes. Think of vitamin C as the gas in the dump truck carrying toxins to the waste dump. Without gas the truck is not going to remove wastes or move at all. Without vitamin C our body is not going to ``dump'' its toxic load. Therefore, ensure adequate vitamin C and always take vitamin C with bioflavinoids for optimal benefit.

Vitamin C can be taken in very high doses until the bowel tolerance level [BTL] is achieved. This BTL is different for different people. Some persons reach tolerance at 4-5 grams (4,000-5,000 mg), while others may not reach tolerance until 10-15 grams (10,000-15,000 mg). Cancer patients notorously can take 20-30 grams (20,000-30,000 mg) of vitamin C before tolerance is reached ... meaning that they needed more vitamin C than most people. By taking vitamin C to its tolerance level we find out 1) what our BTL is and 2) how saturated our body is with Vitamin C. Vitamin C was found by Linus Pauling and Ewan Cameron to be very effective in helping many patients to over come that killer disease, called cancer. Perhaps, this was because vitamin C was needed for detoxification of toxins, which ``caused'' the cancer in the first place. Although Pauling and Cameron were greatly criticized for their work with vitamin C, they were able to help many people overcome cancer and without compromising their health as toxic chemotherapies often did.

Enzymes:

The use of enzymes in detoxification is important, because the body needs an adequate supply of enzymes, not only for digestion, for also for detoxification.[iii] Enzymes are best obtained from fresh raw fruits and vegetables, but may be taken daily with meals as nutritional supplements of multi-digestive enzymes. Enzymes in our food helps us to digest that food, but many foods today are processed, refined, heated (cooked), radiated and stored, which destroys enzymes and leaves it non-vital.[iv] Foods with enzymes destroyed will have a longer shelf life, but will not give one health when it is eaten.

Fresh raw fruits and vegetables are the best source for enzymes and help to give one vibrant health. Enzymes are also used by the body in detoxification of toxic substances. The liver is the source of most detoxification enzymes, which it must make, or store. To aid the body in removing and eliminating wastes and toxins, enzymes are best taken in between meals. This way they do not get involved with digestion, but go to the liver and to the blood for detoxification.

Many therapies have utilized enzymes for improving health and enzymes have long been the key to many detoxification therapies which have helped many to over come that dreaded disease, cancer. Kelley, Gerson, Moerman, and Neiper used alternative nutritional therapies with enzymes for curing cancer. The famous Wobe Mugos enzymes from Europe were utilized with Laetrile therapies for cancer. Never was Laetrile give alone, but was used with vitamins, diet and enzymes. This made the Laetrile therapy very successful in the 1970s. If cancer is a toxic condition, which many feel that it is, then taking enzymes will help it. And it does.

The use of raw foods in many detoxification diets are using the enzymes found naturally in those foods. Additionally, these raw foods provide fiber and, with proper food combining, will not waste the body enzymes reserves. Preserving enzymes is the key to over coming disease and living to ripe old age and remaining healthy. Yes, vitamins and minerals are important, but vitamins are enzyme co-factors and many minerals are use to activate enzymes. Therefore, the vitamins and minerals themselves are only augmenting the role of the enzymes which are detoxifying toxins and supporting metabolism.

Enzymes also help the bowels in cleansing, because they liquefy the bowel content, which makes transit much easier. The role of enzymes in digestion is to break down foods for digestion and absorption. When foods are broken down they become more liquid and the bowels move much easier and faster. Transit time is decreased and our health is increased when toxins are removed and eliminated. Perhaps, this is a link to breaking the ``constipation chain.'' Enzymes are the key to health. Preserve our enzymes and we will be healthy for a long time.

Bowel Cleansing:

Keeping the bowels clean and moving is a major step in regaining our health since the bowels are crucial in the elimination of toxins, especially those processed by the liver. [The liver dumps in to the bowel via the gall bladder.] This is why one hears a lot about the bowels, and bowel cleansing. In severe cases, enemas and colonics may be needed to breakup and washout long-standing bowel encrustations. Diet may do the same thing as an enema or colonic, it will just take longer. Also, one should be very diligent in repopulating after a total washout of the normal flora and probiotics will be necessary to restore that balance.

Constipation is a national pastime and slow bowels are more common today than years previous. For one thing, people not only ate better 100 years ago, they were more active and got out doors more. When the bowels slow down, toxins are not eliminated and are reabsorbed and carried back to the liver for recycling and elimination. Reabsorbed bile salts have been linked to increased cholesterol levels; therefore, cholesterol is a major indicator of constipation. Also, when the bowels get slow and toxin levels increase, the pathogenic microorganisms grow to out-number the normal flora causing dysbiosis. Although flora is needed to correct this, it is the clogged bowels that are the major problem. When the bowels move again, everything else will fall into order.

Our endocrine glands that control metabolism are also involved; since it is our thyroid that controls metabolism and metabolism affects how our bowels are functioning. In this way, constipation can be seen as a symptom of hypothyroidism. Low body temperatures (a symptom of hypothyroidism) are very common today ...although they are not ``normal'' ... as many authors have reported. One major factor in low body temperatures is the suppression of thyroid function by heavy metals, like mercury, which binds to our thyroid hormones and renders them inactive. Eliminate the mercury and the body temperature is likely to return to normal.

The easiest way to get the bowels moving is by using a high fiber diet consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables. Sometimes, one may add extra fiber during the day by drinking a glass of water (juice) with psyllium husk powder. The extra fiber adds to the bulk of the stool and decreases the bowel transit time, which means better toxin elimination and better health. It makes sense that if one can eliminate toxins their health will improve.

One of the best ways to improve the bowel function is with herbal remedies that act as bowel stimulants or laxatives. These products range from the very mild - slippery elm - to the stimulant - cascara sagrada- to the very harsh - aloes and senna. Everyone may react differently to these products, so they should be taken cautiously at first. Some persons may take two aloes with no effect (meaning they are heavily blocked), while others may take a mild herbal and get a much greater effect than most. Herbal bowel combination formulas are excellent because they not only stimulate the bowels to move, but give the bowels the nourishment it needs to move on its own.

Herbal formulas should not preclude a wholesome natural diet, since diet comes first in matters of health. One should not become overly dependent on herbal laxatives, since they deplete potassium and may be ``addicting'' as some authors claim. Yet, herbal products play a key role in getting the body to eliminate toxins by stimulating the eliminative organs like nothing else can and, therefore, cannot be ignored.

Herxheimer Reaction:

The Herxheimer Reaction occurs when the body is detoxifying too rapidly and toxins are being released faster than the body can eliminate them.[v] When this occurs, one will suffer from headaches, nausea, vomiting, and malaise. Even though this is but a short period of the health program, it can be severe and deter one from reaching their intended goals. Also, the person may not know what they are experiencing and think that they are regressing.

To minimize the Herxheimer Reaction:

Drinks lots of pure distilled water

Get minimal exercise daily

Lots of sunshine

Take detoxification slowly ... one step at a time

Don't increase the dose of herbals

Keep the organs of elimination (bowels, lungs, skin, kidneys) open

Take detox baths

Use aromatherapy oils for aches -like peppermint, birch, and wintergreen

Sweat by using exercise, saunas, baths, and herbs

Avoid foreign chemicals and refined processed foods

If the Herxheimer reaction occurs, cut back on your health detoxification program. Reduce the dose of herbs and follow the above outline to reduce the symptoms of toxin elimination. The more toxins there are to eliminate, the sicker one is when they come out. Generally, one will feel better when all is over and health is restored again. Just remember, don't give up.

Conclusion:

Detoxification may produce symptoms of headaches, nausea, malaise and vomiting due to the toxins being released [Herxheimer Reaction]. If this occurs, one should back off the program and proceed slowly. Proceeding to fast with detoxification can have disastrous results when toxins are released into the circulation. Our body should be primed and ready to eliminate toxins before they are released. We do this by getting the bowels working, keeping the skin clean and getting the kidneys and lungs operating. Only by having all organs of elimination in proper operating order can our body begin to dump toxins efficiently and maximally. Keeping the skin clean and healthy is of prime importance also.

Detoxification is essential for good health to exist. Our body must eliminate toxins daily or we would die immediately. Since our environment is more toxic today, our livers are over stressed with environmental toxins to deal with daily. Processing other toxins, when the liver is stressed, may be delayed. Detoxification is also a lifestyle change. For it is by the way we live that determines our health and how our liver processes toxins. Detoxification is easy if we eat a wholesome natural organic diet and live life in a natural way. But for those who want their cake and eat it too, detoxification may be compromised. A change your lifestyle may be needed and detoxification will be forthcoming. Nature has afforded us the chance to live in a toxic environment and not be affected by it. Of course, we have to live right to get that chance. Without detoxification we may not get a second chance.

Good health is within our reach, but first we must cleanse this ``temple'' and eat a wholesome natural diet that provides us with maximal nutrients and fiber. Herbs can help us stimulate the liver, lungs, kidneys and bowels when needed, but diet is the first priority in any detoxification program. Don't become overly dependent on herbal laxatives. When toxins are released one may feel bad for a day or two, but when our good health is restored we will have renewed energy and will ``soar on the wings of an eagle''. Many people living today have never known what good health ``feels'' like. They survive with an abundance of toxins and an existence less than healthy.

Good health is not hard to find, but does require diligence and life style changes which are compatible with toxin elimination. Sir Jason Winters Says, ``Death begins in the colon.'' With good toxin elimination through natural detoxification programs our health and energy are restored.

For those of you who feel too toxic and who are concerned that it might set you back, listen to your inner voice. My motto is "an impatient patient is his/her own worst enemy."

Some may prefer the way Dr. Roger's (MD) recipe is written and done (don't hang the bag too high), because it is very gentle. She says to weaken or strengthen the coffee if you need to. She also advises adding 1 tablespoon of unsulfured blackstrap molasses per quart of coffee because that makes it even easier to retain.

It has really helped me, but I was so miserable that I had nothing to lose when I started. Actually, I guess I had a lot that needed to be lost, but do whatever you feel is best. If anyone decides to try it, remember, this is NOT a "high enema" and you don't want a lot of flow pressure because that could cause the coffee to travel farther than the Sigmoid (descending) colon.

Thank you again to all of you who have shared your experiences and so much information on detox. I have been burning up the paper in my printer trying to print out the many sources of information that I want to read more carefully.

Well, there is just too much agreement here, so I just have to try the coffee. But I'll have to admit that I'll be looking for a candid camera or a note posted on my back.

And, Charlie, Anna is north of Dallas. I always heard that you south Texas men were a tough bunch; I just don't think that I can handle that salt thing.

GiGi - thanks for the great info.!!! I went "downtown" today and purchased ORGANIC ground coffee from an Organic Health Food Store (the coffee comes from Germany) to send to my (lymie) sis in Wisconsin. I sent her directions according to Gerson protocol.
Common sense says use organic! Common sense says use distilled water! Lymies certainly do not need to add any more "chemicals" to their problem and solutions.

For those of you who are "do-it-yourself-ers"...a few hints. Lubricate the tip of the nozzle with a little vaseline when setting up the equipment. Let some of the solution out (in the potty) to clear the air out of the tube before you insert it. (Most kits come with a clamp to put on the hose which connects the enema bag to the nozzle.) Take slow deep breaths - especially exhale slowly (it helps you to relax) - when instilling the liquid. NO 3 H enemas!!! (High, hot and he..ava lot). Yes, in years gone by...they were common.

Anyone hear of having bad muscle, tendon and 'bone' pain after Rife use?????

Is this 'normal'??

It lasts for weeks in spite of a good detox regime.

Hope this is not an adverse effect.

These postings on this delicate subject please me to no end!!!!! It's wonderful that more and more people are recognizing this crazy "alternative" stuff as not so crazy; that colon cleansing is so important, if we want to regain our health. And by now you all probably also know that you should never forget the mouth/jaw as the first and foremost depository of toxins that should never be forgotten either. Most of us would like to brush it under the carpet, but that is simply delaying the inevitable if good health is our main desire. I tried to "put it aside" for a number of years and just got sicker until I finally had to choose - living with the pains of Lyme or cleaning out the heavy metals and dental toxins. Now all the pain is gone! Please, if you feel you have a problem in this area or if you have or have had certain exposures to toxins through your work, etc., don't forget to address that. Remember, the Lyme bugs plus viruses and parasites love and live beautifully in these contaminated areas of our body and won't think of leaving until you start the clean-up. Take care.

Sizzled, what frequencies are you using and for how long? Are you using also the "healing frequencies" not just the blast them critters ones? Have you tried the frequencies for inflammation and pain, for instance? RSVP email please.

Sizzled, I do have herxes with the Rife sessions and sometimes my tendons or joints hurt both during and after a session but it usually doesn't last as long as you are describing. Marnie makes a really good point about using the anti-inflammatory and healing frequencies along with the ones that kill the bad guys. There are also freqs that aid circulation that have helped me. Email me and I'll send those to you.

Katy, I think you may be right. I told him how sensitive I am to caffeine, and I don't recall the exact conversation, but he said noncaffeinated organic would do a very good job. Maybe the caffeine gives it an extra push. Anyway, for me it's moot, I just can't bring myself to do it!

But I ran across some information on clay--which has great absorptive properties--and using it in your bath to draw out toxins. I read some stories where the water turned almost black (yuck) for adults where kids, still relatively healthy, did not. You can buy it very cheap (not from health foods store.) If I follow through on this which I will sooner or later out of curiosity, I'll let you know. There are a few sites just about clay's health benefits and where to get decent clay for very cheap.

Katy, at the moment it seems to me I only saved the site they recommended for cheap clay. That was:
http://www.bigceramicstore.com/index.htm

I looked thru my internet history of the last 3 days but couldn't find the site about the healing clay. Maybe a google search "healing clay" would help? The point they made was that SOME commercially available clays were pretty effective. Sorry I can't do better at this moment!

Stacey, no I have not started zhang's herbs. I'm on major deadline at the moment & then have to attend a 3 day conference. So I'm just doing allicin. After the conference I'll start the other 2 formulas. :-)

The first thing that popped out when I scanned the info. on clay was the word...Magnesium. Duh. That's why Dr. B. recommends Mag-Tab SR 1 every 12 hours. He says do NOT rely on "Cal-Mag". Furthermore, that's why Epsom Salt baths help. Epsom salts are Magnesium Sulfate. At first I thought this was about a clay "spa" type of treatment - where it is rubbed all over you and then you shower it off after it dries. Nope. They're talking about EATING dirt. Yikes.

In Feb 2002 when this thread was started, I thought all this talk was crazy. Coffee enemas, come on.

Gosh, I have learned a lot since then. Back then I was still of the opinion that abx were going to cure me. I finally realized in early 2003 I was an abx failure.

I opened my eyes, ears and mind to all the alternative methods. I'm not cured yet, but in the last several months, I've made more progress than the previous 4 years. I'm on my way to recovery.

I've done colonics several times in the few months with some good results. So now I think I'm try this coffee enema protocal. It could be another step forward.

Thanks Tx Mom for bringing it to the top.

Pam

An ounce of Folgers by "reverse osmosis" is a heck of a lot cheaper, safer and more effective than addictive pain killers for migraines.

Don't worry. You won't run the risk of getting addicted to it either.

It's a bit too much of a nuisance to bother with doing, for anyone to worry about becoming addicted to this method of pain relief, that's for sure.

Believe me, it wouldn't have been such a popular topic if it didn't work as well as it does -- especially for those killer headaches.

Helps with fatigue and brain fog too, but for pressure headaches, it's absolutely amazing.

According to Dr. Perricone, coffee will cause an insulin spike like sugar does.

That would mean coffee is alkaline (by itself). So is nicotine (by itself!). Research nicotine to treat ulcerative colitis and even skin cancer. (It is believed the addictive factor in smoking is caused by the nicotine...craving ++ charges???)

I'm not talking about smoking to cure!...cigs contain toxins, a lot of them, neg. charges that MIGHT sub for the essential neg. charges like those supplied by vitamin C. Hence the lung damage.

Insulin is acidic.

However, when we DRINK coffee, we heat it -brew (add neg. charges) and this would, deplete the pos. charges.

This is what happens when we overcook our foods...deplete the minerals and destroy the enzymes.

However, a coffee enema, alkaline....hummmm.
Impact on the normal flora??? Or to counter the toxins only???

Just thought I'd dig the coffee enema topic back up, as unpleasant as it may be...

I tried two of them, and you can now officially add me to the list of people who are a tad too toxic for them. They made me sicker too. I'm sure they'll really help me at some point, but I guess now just isn't the time.

But I DO have a ton of liver problems that I really need to address right now. I'm having terrible detox problems. Basically the problem is that I don't.

I don't want to bother my LLMD with this question, so I'll ask you guys...will a regular little fleet enema help at all? One of my biggest problems is the fact that I have no peristaltic action. My digestive system barely moves. I do go everyday, but not enough.

So could just a regular fleet enema help at all? Even just a little? I'll even try anything that will just help a *teeny* bit.

Thanks [Smile]

Do you take any magnesium or Vitamin C? Both of those are usually depleted in lyme victims and need supplementation. Both, when you reach optimum levels, cause loose bowels. At that point, you have to back up one step in your dose.

I am currently on Welchol for detoxing biotoxins from the bugs. It can make you constipated, which I can't understand. If it is binding and removing toxins, why on earth does it make me constipated?

Anyway, I have been taking Vit C for a long time. At one time, I was taking 6000mg daily. Now I take 2000mg. I added magnesium as I read the Welchol will deplete your minerals too. The magnesium is keeping me regular.

If you are supplementing these two things, you might give them a try.

Yes Ive done the coffee enema many times.

I was excited to try it and see how I felt.

It helped a little, nothing spectacular.

I also just used organic and ground it fine to get the oils and then did drip.

It seemed to work fine. Its the caffeine and the oils that we are after.

It didnt take away my chemical sensitivity and chronic vertigo though. PoPo I guess thats mine to still keep after 4 years. Will this effect me till I die?

Btw, the Ultra mangosteen juice keeps my intestines regular. Without drinking it everyday, I'd be constipated.
