sorry - but I feel too bad to search and read
Has anyone found that prolonged use of abx can make you feel worse? 2 years ago I was on abx off and on for a year and eventually couldn't take it any more. When I came off I slowly got better and all my symptoms were gone. I was then well for a year.
Something flared up again at the start of this summer (I was bitten but tick tested negative also all co-infections although I have a couple positive bands). I have been on doxy for last 2 weeks (also amoxy for 2 weeks earlier in the summer and cipro for UTI). I know this is not long but I feel ghastly - could I be sensitized to abx from past. Instead of feeling better I am getting worse. Terrible nausea, headaches. Any thoughts?

most people will say this is a herx but i think that yes, it is possible that some people are just highly sensitive to antibiotics and cannot tolerate them in large or prolonged doses.

Yes they make you feel like crap after a week or two that should subside from abx's then 28 to 34 days you will probaly herx always right everyday down journal.

Herxing has a cycle, typically about once a month you would herx as the bug killing cycle continues on. Sounds like when you were herxing, you quit and started all over again.
I think you may have gotten enough abx for short term relief but as often happens when people don't stay the course, it rears it's ugly head again.
I am sorry you are having these problems, nothing worse than herxing and feeling that way.
I do have a friend who went off and felt ALOT better for some time but eventually she had to admit the sx were there and she went back on them. Now it's a couple of years later and she is on abx and doing great. Just had to tough it out thru the herxing.
She had babs too which can EASILY show as a false negative. The tests they have for babs only tests for a few stains, not anywhere near the 9 or 12 strains that exist. EASY to have a false positive so consider going by sx to see if you have babs sx and may be this is contributing to your problems.
Good luck, Curley

I tried a bunch of different abx over an 8 month period. The side effects eventually got so bad I couldn't continue.
I had some herxing but I felt worse the whole time after starting abx.
I just don't want to spend the rest of my life on abx. There are lots of alternative treatments. If you lean in that direction - it's not always easy. You have to do alot of experimenting & researching on your own.
If the abx helped me - I probably would have continued. I never had "cycles" of being worse or better as some people describe. I don't think I have the co-infections, either. So, my case may be different than others.
I figured I'd try going off the abx last Nov. 2007. I haven't wanted to go back on them since. I haven't ruled them out completely but there are still many alternative approaches that I haven't tried, yet.
I believe there are alternatives.
