last weekend i had the first gall colic in my life - outch...! of course ive had 4 weeks of rocephin before (already the 5th cycle), which i stopped now.
since the colic i have the problem, that something is pressing me from the inside under my rips on the right side. its not after eating, its always there. is this typical for gall stone pain?
the docs in hospital found gall stones or sludge with ultrasound, but are not sure if this causes the pain and dont know what to do. my llmd said i should wait 14 days, then think about bladder surgery. roche of course says usually the symptoms will go away, but from what i read i have a different impression. what are your experiences? any advice? how long to wait for the decision surgery or not? what also depresses me is that rocephin for was the most successful antibiotic so far.
I can only speak from my own experience, (I just had my gall bladder out). But for me, once I had the first big gall bladder attack, that was the end of fatty foods for me.
Any discomfort that I had prior to the attack was relatively minor. Basically, if I ate something that was greasy or fatty, it would feel like I had eaten a rock.
I had to wait for 6 weeks after the big attack (comparable to labor pains) prior to surgery. During that time I ate ony fruit, veggies, and for a special treat I would have shrimp cocktail and panella bread (made from flour, water and salt, nothing else).
On this diet, I had no gall bladder pain, and lost a lot of weight.
If you are abx, I don't think you would want to try this diet, it's just too hard to eliminate all fats, plus carbs and sugar. (I was taken off abx until I was able to resume a normal diet).
Your doc's advice sounds on target, wait and see, and if necessary, have the surgery.
There are gall bladder flush things that you can do, but I didn't try them because my gall bladder was just too far gone. Same thing for the medications that reduce gall stones.
You might want to discuss these options with your doc though, as they might present viable alternatives to surgery for you.
Good luck with this. kp

My issues resolved a few weeks after coming off of Rocephin....I don't think I had stones however, just sludge. Unfortunately my liver enzymes were also elevated to almost 900 so no doctor would let me continue with the Rocephin after that. For the future, you may want to discuss with your LLMD pulsing the treatment...

now - after some more checks with ultrasound - i know at least the pressing does not come from stomach ulcer or the appendix.
but i am (and the docs also are) still unsure if its the gall stones causing the trouble. can gall stone pain be mild and constant instead of rare severe colics? can it be always there instead of only after (fat) eating? can it be UNDER the rips on the right side (although the gall bladder is a bit higher)?

My gall bladder pain was right up under my rght rib cage, radiated to the center of my stomach (dilation of the bile duct suggested that a stone may have passed through). I also had lower back pain.
My big gall bladder attack lasted close to 12 hours, and only subsided when iv pain meds were given.
Pain overall after the attack lasted for over a week, despite not eating any fat, in fact I ate minimal food, losing at least a pound a day.
Has your doc considered dong an MRCP (I think those are the right initials!) It is a specialized mri, which will give more detailed info than a sonogram.
I hope you find your answer soon, and I'm sorry that this may mean the end of rocephin for you, since you indicated that this med worked well for you.

kp, thats interesting to read that your pain after the colic lastet for a week. my colic was exactly a week ago so i still hope the pressing will go away by itself. i still think its strange that i dont have a problem with eating fat (like chease or milk) at the moment and ask myself where the pressing on my right side comes from.
i really dont wanna do a surgery and then realize the pressing's still there... and i'm also a bit afraid that with the surgery and the necessary meds for it old symptoms will come back. did you get iv antibiotic before the surgery to reduce this risk?
thanks - i'll ask my doc for a specialized mri of the gall bladder.
regarding rocephin i consider taking claforan next time which is similar but not as hard for the gall bladder.

For gall bladder problems, drinking olive oil. I know it sounds wrong, but olive oil and grapefruit juice or lemon juice. Look it up. Many people swear by it.
Good luck!
