My PCP said I could have a chronic viral infection. I was wondering what do antivirals do and how do they work?

Do they help?

Thanks,
Melissa

Yes, antivirals can be a huge help if you have a chronic viral infection. You do need to know which virus(es) you have, though -- all antivirals don't work equally well on every virus.

Most people harbor viruses in their bodies, many since childhood. A healthy immune system keeps these viruses from becoming a problem.

Many Lymies have chronic viral infections, perhaps because their immune systems are so compromised.

There is a lot of literature now on viral causes of chronic fatigue.

For the hubby, who had several viral titers that were off the charts, antiviral treatment has been extremely helpful.

************

There are basically 2 kinds of pharmaceutically produced antivirals, and several herbal antivirals as well as supplements. The hubby used zinc and Olive Leaf extract as well as prescription antivirals.

From Antivirals

M2 ion channel inhibitors stop the virus from reproducing. Amantadine and rimantadine are examples of M2 ion channel inhibitors.

Zanamivir and oseltamivir are examples of neuraminidase inhibitors. These drugs...
- interfere with the release of virus from infected cells
- cause the aggregation of virus
- may help respiratory secretions make the virus inactive

There's an interesting, but not comprehensive, list of herbal antivirals at This Link

There's a good article about antivirals, and which ones are used for which viruses, Here and Here

I take LOMATIUM as an anti-viral.

It is very effective on my herpes simplex I lipsores--- stops them cold. It is the most reliable, effective thing i ever used on the herpes lip sores; i used to take lysine and lemon balm.

I'm hoping it can be used against future H5N1 bird flu. LOMATIUM protected the Washoe Indian tribe from pandemic flu in 1918.

It grows in dry plains states, is a member of the parsley family and tastes like parsley. I buy extract drops.
