I just added Bactrim to my current protocol of Mepron, Biaxin, Plaquenil, and Bicillin shots.

If you have taken Bactrim for prolonged periods, what infection were you targeting and what were your side effects/experience with the drug?

I have heard it hits lyme, bart and babs. I think my LLMD is treating me for bart but hopefully it will help with babs as well.

I have not had too much anxiety lately but it seems like in just one day, this drug brings out lots of panic/anxiety!

Hmmm... I have not taken Bactrim. I actually told my LLMD that I would not take any Sulfa drugs as my sister wound up with full body hives for weeks, it was scary, and I read too many people with SJS that were on Sulfa antibiotics. My LLMD said that was fine, that the Sulfa drugs don't do much for Lyme.

Is the Bactrim for the Co's?? I am surprised as I didn't know LLMD's used this class of Antibiotics.

Take care,
Ocean

I was on Bactrim for 3 months with azithromycin. My LLMD feels this combo targets babs and bart. I am now on it with levaquin and mino for bart/lyme...or whatever is inhabiting me.

I have had no problems with Bactrim. I just added it (this time) one month ago and have a definite decrease in neuropathy and anxiety.

Take care
Kris

Hi,
It's Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, a potentially fatal illness caused by the drug. Here's a link I found with a picture of it:

http://www.lawyersandsettlements.com/case/bactrim_sjs.html

My alternative MD also had just attended a conference last year saying that the Sulfa drugs attach to a receptor site and it never leaves, that kind of scared me too, I tried talking my sister out of taking Bactrim because of that, now she will never take it again.

I have no idea if I've ever had a sulfa antibiotic, not sure what I was on with my appendicitis, I may have already have had it. I'm not against all antibiotics, I've just heard a lot of bad stuff about this class.

Take care,
Ocean

Bactrim DOES work..just do a search using my name and member number and the key words bactrim septra and you'll come up with all the info you can digest and more.

SJS is stevens-johnson syndrome..a rare sort of body eating condition that can occur with some meds including bactrim.

for most of us the bad side effects possible are kidney stones and rashes.

my non professional 2 cents worth.

Charlie

Bactrim helped alot; I only took it for two months and had good results, including a decrease in neurological symptoms.

The first week on bactrim was kind of tough; definite herxing. The initial side effects included increase in fatigue, but that passed after the first week or so.

Hi Mandy, Sorry you got such a strong reaction to the Bactrim. Anxiety can be a much worse herx symptom than the usual increased fatigue, headaches, etc.

If Bactrim does work for Lyme, Bartonella, and Babesia, then your reaction is not surprising because all 3 can cause anxiety. I think severe anxiety is most commonly associated with Bartonella, so maybe the Bactrim is hitting your Bart, or just increasing your Lyme and/or Babesia herx?

Or maybe your body is revolting against all the meds you are on? [cussing] Seriously, you are on a lot of medications, so I hope you are getting monthly bloodwork to monitor your liver, kideys, etc.

For the anxiety, Hyland's Calm Forte and Rescue Remedy are good natural alternatives to benzos.

I hope you feel better soon! [Smile]

Thanks all for the replies!

I am hoping this drug will help despite the risks asociated with taking it.

If people have had good experiences, which it sounds like most have, I'll continue with it.

Erica, you're right I need to at this next apt in Dec get these tests, I haven't done any since starting abx.
