Chemicals that were thought to be relatively safe were found to cause damage to the brain and liver in animals when combined with STRESS and is likely to do the same thing in humans.

This study was done at Duke University.

WTF?!

Unless you're Buddha, stress is going to be part of your life, so it's absurd to designate any of these chemicals safe.

Did you notice what the chemicals were?

-----

But a decade of neurologic research has revealed widespread damage to the brain, nervous system, liver and testes of rats exposed to 60 days of low-dose chemicals -- the insect repellant DEET, the insecticide permethrin, and the anti-nerve gas agent pyridostigmine bromide.

These are the same drugs that the soldiers received during the 1990 - 1991 Persian Gulf War, and Abou Donia's rats were exposed to the same levels -- in weight adjusted doses -- as the soldiers were reportedly given.

-----

This study was also in regards to Gulf War Syndrome...

If you ask me, it's about covering up the real cause of Gulf War Syndrome....

Even the Buddha had stress... The real issue is how you handle it. This study seems like propaganda to me.

Don't they sell these chemicals (DEET & permethrin) to everyone in drugstores, etc to use to shield themselves from insects?

The nerve gas is another story...

I'm sorry - I don't want to offend anyone but this seems like a joke to me. I'm sorry for those who were affected by GWS - is a horrible illness.

Results of the study were published in the Feb. 27, 2004, issue of the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health.

This is not the first research to question the safety of the chemicals studied.

This report focused on the effect of certain chemicals from skin exposure - rather than just GWS. I don't think that was the authors' intention to say that's all there is to GWS, but it could be an just one important link to some cases.

They were primarily focusing on what DEET and other chemicals can do to the liver and brains of anyone. Looking for a safer way.

Just because it is sold in stores does not mean it is safe.

Dr. Abou-Donia has also studied the health effects of another "safe" substance, SPLENDA.

And according to that study Splenda isn't all that safe after all.

I think you would have to be living in the dark ages to not know that soooo many things sold in stores are not safe.

It's up to us as individuals to research it. The gov't certainly isn't doing it...

In my opinion, one would have to have their head examined by a stone cutter if you think it's OK to use fake sweeteners.

Take a look at Donald Rumsfield's connections to having aspartame approved by the FDA.

I'm sorry - I don't mean to be offensive to anyone. It just makes me angry.

We are living in a big science experiment with all the chemicals that we surround ourselves with. Hundreds of thousands of new chemicals are approved every year. Who knows what the interactions will be. It's too many to even calculate.

You really need to research Gulf War Syndrome to see why this study is a farce...

Then there are a lot of people living in the dark ages. I'm getting farther and farther away from chemicals. But it has been a learning process.

I keep a spray bottle of water and apple cider vinegar and I clean everything with it and baking soda. It does a better job on my stove than 409 ever did. Just spray the vinegar water, sprinkle a little baking soda and it works as good as comet. Easy too. Maybe not as easy as scrubbing bubbles, but I don't have to hold my breath when using it.

There have been threads on this site in the past arguing for deet and permethrin use. We are still in the dark ages and way too trusting.

OMG Get a load of this!

My husband and I own an insurance agency. He was talking to a lady this morning giving her a quote for auto insurance. Her husband just passed away 2 weeks ago at the age of 62. Guess how!

They were having some tile work done in their home. They came into the house and the fumes from the grout caused a reaction in his lungs. Not hers, not the tile guy's. His lungs filled with fluid and he was dead in 20 seconds. No prior history of health problems.

Stress? Over reactive immune system? Holy Cow!

We just don't know how our body will react to a chemical and even if we never reacted to that chemical before, we could the next time we encounter it.

What a scary story.

I don't mean to sound condescending... It just makes me mad about this.

I guess I've been following alot of radio shows, reading books, etc. about natural healing for over 30 years. My mother got lymphoma due to using black hair dye many years ago. I was 12 at the time (I'm 48 now).

So, I guess it just seems like a no brainer to me to try to avoid chemicals. I won't eat or use probably 95% of the stuff they sell in a regular supermarket.

I guess I just have a healthy distrust of authority figures...? LOL

Thanks for your story Luvs. Someone I know just had their bathroom redone!

The hard part will be when we start getting mostly genetically modified foods. They don't have labels & they don't have to tell us that it's a GMO.

These food are quite risky for human consumption.

Here's an excellent article on some not-so-obvious things in the environment that trigger a 'stress' response.

adamm - they used to spray the neighborhoods in NJ with poison when I was a kid. We used to ride our bikes through it...

What were they thinking?

Yeah sparkle, I'm with you.

Just a few years ago, I would ride my horse down my neighborhood streets and could swear I was smelling bug sprays, but how could that be? I lived in the country.

Then, one day as I was riding along, I see a sign on the side of the road saying "Don't spray this area as it is under scientific study" Signed by our local college.

Here I was so careful not to use any form of pesticide on my yard or my pastures due to run off into my well and find out the county is spraying all along the side of the road I assume to keep weeds down.

It is impossible to be chemical free today.

Do not underestimate the damage chemicals (toxins) can have on bodies. Besides fertilizers, poisons, antibiotics and preservatives in food, ink in books, woodproducts in fires and newspapers, perfumes, latex and plastics, one can become sensitive to electro-magnetic fields (TV,radio, microwave, computer, phone, car, fluorescent lighting) to name a few. It has been a challenge balancing my life with all these sensitivities and I get severe burning of my skin with autoimmune response, diuresis and electrolyte imbalance from short exposure. My LLMD noticed I was getting red burn marks on my cheeks and nose while sitting on the examination table under fluorescent lighting at his office.
I had myself tested for food allergies and now eat an organic diet, void of all preservatives, soy and eggs, use chemical free and natural shampoos and soaps for personal and home use, clean with vinegar, dust with lemon oil and avoid all places of "hazard" (clothing stores, parties, hardware and building stores, places with much fluorescent lighting, etc. After 12 years of Lyme's my immune system is depleted and unable to fight off the toxins. I placed myself on a detox program, take digestive enzymes, probiotics, antigen injections, nutritional supplements and minerals, amino acids and peptides, Glutathione injections, Omega-3/6, Coq10,and plan to add chelation therapy and mercury detox. It is a daily balancing act and it sucks, but I will get there eventually...I refuse to give in.
But please, eliminate the junk from your life now, while you still can. It's very lonely on my planet.
