I've been treating Lyme for over a year now and am starting to think I also have Babesia despite negative tests.
I have been having issues w/dark urine and blood in the urine and unsuccessful treatment for a UTI. The urinalysis also didn't culture anything. I recently read that Babs can cause this. I do also have some respiratory symptoms which I believe can be due to Babs.
I recently did 6 mos. of Biaxin and Plaquenil and the issues w/blood in the urine started very soon after stopping that combo so I'm wondering if the Plaquenil was keeping things at bay if I do also have Babs.
Anyway, I'm not at all familiar with what is involved with Babs treatment or the duration. If someone could give me a general idea I'd really appreciate it. Is it as complicated and varied as Lyme treatment?

The length of treatment for babs really seems to vary greatly for people.
I have heard from llmds that many can beat babesia with 5 months of treatment.
Others cannot, and unfortunately need to treat for longer. I have heard of people treating for a year or two.
Like with all TBD's, it probably depends on the strain of babesia, your health status and other co-infections, how long you have had babesia, plus other factors like the treatment you use, your genetic make-up, etc.

I wish I knew the answer to that question.
I know many have whipped it out of there in 5 months. My first LLMD had me on Mepron and Zith for 7 months with other abx tossed in off and on during those seven months.
Then I was referred to a more well known LLMD and he went my a different type of lab testing and told me I hadn't gotten rid of it and had to go back on the mepron along with my IV's and orals.
I was a bit discouraged and said, "but I was on it for 7 months". His comment was that it is very persistent in some patients and I just hadn't gotten rid of it.
So here I am with another 3 months under my belt and I see my LLMD next week. I feel like crap but not sure if it's the lyme or a co.
I guess some of us just want to be difficult patients and hang on to this babs. NOT!!!!!
Good luck.

Laura, do you know your ferritin status? It may be low if you have babs....
