Hello everyone, I've been on oral doxy for a month and now oral amoxicillin for a week. The neuro symptoms I am having seemed to improve during my first couple weeks, but recently they have returned to nearly what they were before antibiotics.
Would I get better results from trying IV antibiotics? Are they more productive than oral antibiotics? I am asking because a friend of mine, that lives close to me, has been treated with 28 days of IV antibiotics twice now....once when originally diagnosed and now due to a relapse.
Should I be pushing for IV treatment or should I expect similar results from oral treatment?
I hope to hear from those that can speak to this from experience.
Thank you very much!!!
William

I'll tell you our experience - but with the obvious caveat that everyone is different.
Also, when someone posts that they that they have "neuro" symptomps I always wonder whether they are suffering from primarily brain/cognitive issues or whether they have central nervous system (CNS) issues???
Anyway... my husband's symptoms began straight away presenting with balance, coordination and fatigue issues about 2 years ago. Prior to dx, they progressed to the point where he literally could not walk.
Finally a positive Lyme test, 5 days into his IV treatment he was like a new man. After 28 days he was about 80% back to normal. No follow-up tx w/ orals, and 3-4 months later he relapsed.
He saw some improvement on 200mg daily of doxy for 3-4 months and then plateaued, increased to 400mg daily for 3-4 monts, but is back on IV and that has definitely made a more significant improvement.
So, in our case - IV was definitely better and made a greater impact. I wish we had done a longer course and followed up with orals the first time around but that was under the care of an Infectious Disease doc, before we had any idea of the Lyme controversy.
I'm sure you'll hear a variety of opinions, though.

In my own experience, getting the IV treatment made a world of difference. I got a little bit better on oral abx, but I got a LOT better on IV, and quickly.
My biggest symptom was joint pain (completely gone after IV treatment), and after that I'd say cognitive issues and fatigue.
I also didn't have the smoothest experience with my IV treatment, but it was definitely worth it for me.
