Oh help! My LLMD just started me on Smilax drops for meurotoxin elimination. I did have bilateral breast cancer in '04 and was told to stay away from hormones (estro. and progest.) I read that Smilax promotes these. Just had a biopsy on one breast nip. Don't have results yet. Is the Smilax a help or threat? Also, it is high in alcohol. What to do. Paid $40 for the bottle.

What did your doctor say in answer to this question?

Sorry that I do not have a direct answer.

The alcohol in tinctures - unless you are on flagyl - is minimal. Still, I prefer the powdered extracts when possible.

Smilax is one of the very best things I've taken. And I keep forgetting about it. It can cause upset GI system, so go slowly at first.

It is usually used as part of a formula - and can provide a balance so that nothing goes too far in any one direction.

Some general information is below and I will look a little later for specifics to your question. In the meantime, it may be here if you want to look through a bunch of fascinating abstracts:

PubMed Search:

Smilax - 119 abstracts

Sarsaparilla - 132 abstracts

SARSAPARILLA ROOT (Smilax species)

Sarsaparilla root has been famous in the West since 1574, when a French physician described its use in treating syphilis. . . .

This does not yet answer your specific question about estrogen. However, it is interesting to note:

J Ethnopharmacol. 2007 Aug 15;113(1):115-24. Epub 2007 May 18.

A flavonoid glycoside isolated from Smilax china L. rhizome in vitro anticancer effects on human cancer cell lines.

Li YL, Gan GP, Zhang HZ, Wu HZ, Li CL, Huang YP, Liu YW, Liu JW.

State Key Laboratory of Bioreactor Engineering, East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai 200237, PR China.

The anticancer activity of eight crude extracts of Smilax china L. rhizome (SCR) against HeLa cells was assessed by MTT assay and clonogenic assay, the fraction rich in flavonoids had show good activity against HeLa cells.

A bioassay-guided separation on this extract lead to the detection of kaempferol-7-O-beta-D-glucoside (KG), which belongs to flavonoid glycoside, displayed marked anticancer activity.

We evaluated its in vitro cytotoxicity and antiproliferative effect in a panel of established cancer cell lines by MTT assay and clonogenic assay. KG induces A375 and HL60 cells apoptosis, which was demonstrated by morphological changes, DNA fragmentation and flow cytometric analysis.

Fluorescent staining with Hoechst 33258 showed fragmentation and condensation of chromatin in the A375 and HL60 cells. Flow cytometric analysis shown that A375 and HL60 cells treated with KG resulted in the appearance of a hypodiploid peak (A0 region), probably due to the presence of apoptosing cells and/or apoptotic bodies with DNA content less than 2n.

Quantitation of the hypodiploid cells shows a dose-dependent response to KG, and this result is in good accordance with that of the DNA fragmentation assay by agarose gel electrophoresis.

Our results suggested that cell cycle arrest at G(1) phase and induce apoptosis as a mechanism by which KG exerts an antiproliferative effect.

You can take Calcium-D-glucarate pills. I take Life Extension brand.

I haven't researched it at all; Life Extension says it blocks the most harmful kind of estrogen.

It's easy to get the alcohol out of the drops. Just put them in hot water, the alcohol evaporates. Make a mug of hot water as if for tea, then add the sarsaparilla drops. I forget how many minutes to evaporate--- 10? 15?

You don't have to take Sarsaparilla, i would imagine. Aren't there other things that can do what the sarsaparilla is supposed to do?

Keebler and Pam, Thank you both for your input. I feel that I should take this (sars.) since I paid $40 for the bottle, right in the LLMD's off. But I shall search for that particular calcium, especially since I was just told to not take cal. carbonate....this is what I have. It comes with Actonel. Geeesh!!!

The Calcium-D-glucarate is not intended to be a calcium pill. It's not meant as a pill to fulfill your daily calcium requirement.

The calcium there is just a part of the chemical compound that does whatever it does blocking the harmful estrogen, which is its purpose.

As for Calcium Carbonate, it's considered one of the least absorbable kinds of Calcium pills. Calcium Citrate Malate is said to be more absorbable. I have good luck personally with Advacal and with Life Extension brand "Bone Restore", which is calcium fructo-borate and calcium bisglycinate.
