My LLD said no alcohol whatsoever. It was my second visit and I forgot to ask why.

If anyone knows the answer I would appreciate it.

I don't remember reading the answer so far. [confused]

Don't quote me, but here is what I get from the no alcohol.

One there is a ton of sugar in alcohol = feeding bacteria and feeding yeast.

Two alcohol supresses the immune system.

Am I right?

Three (forgot about this initially) you use your liver to detox alcohol and your liver is going through alot already trying to get rid of all the other stuff.

Ok I think I am done. [Smile]

Lyme is one of the most toxic infections known to man.

Alcohol is toxic to the liver. Healthy people who have healthy livers can detox a certain amount. Lyme patients cannot.

Alcohol also causes a real hit to brain cells.

Lyme patients already have a hit to to brain cells and adding alcohol will increase damage and severely decrease chances of a full recovery.

Even a tiny amount of alcohol can spell disaster for the body/brain of a lyme patient - and not just for a few hours. It can take a long time to recover from one misstep - or it can create damage that may not be able to be overcome, especially in light of medicines that the body also has to process.

Most LLMDs are very clear in that if one wants to get well, they simply must employ the very best of health habits.

While this can be a hard transition, it is far easier than being disabled for the rest of your life. Being able to feel good is worth a great deal. And while it may not come for a while, it's great to have that chance.

Alcohol can also interfere with some of the meds we take. Flagyl, for example, combined with alcohol will cause a very nasty reaction, including lots of vomiting.

I have not been forbidden from alcohol (yet), but I've generally been avoiding it since I got sick. I find it can cause a mild inflammatory reaction and generally make me feel icky the next day.

Also, it does use up some liver enzymes that otherwise could be processing my meds.

On Thanksgiving, I had about 1/4 inch of wine in a small glass. It was fine. But I wouldn't risk a full glass.

Thanks so much for the info, I figured something to do with yeast. But didn't realize or think about the other implications.

Fortunately for me, I don't drink. Maybe a half glass of wine at the holidays.

Being of Italian descent, I have wine makers in the family. And for healthy people wine has many great benefits. My parents are always giving me wine and encouraging me to have a little every day.

So I told my Mom absolutely not due to Lyme and then she asked why. I couldn't really remember at the time what if anything the doc said.

Happy New Year to All! [group hug]
