Hello,

Is there anything that can be done to support kidneys during heavy abx treatment?

Do things like Milk Thistle, Alpha Lipoic Acid, and NAC detox the kidneys as well as liver, or just liver?

Thanks!!

You would never want to "detox" the kidneys, exactly, as that would actually put more stress on them - they can only filter out so much at any one time or they will become damaged.

(Although, some homeopathics might help the kidneys to draw out toxins, say if a person had been exposed to certain chemicals that kidneys might store rather than flush. This would best be done with a seasoned ND - very gently.)

The kidneys are pretty fantastic all on their own. Drinking enough water to help the kidneys is the best thing we can do. On the flip side, too much water can stress the kidneys and result in nutrient depletion. Keeping blood sugar in balance is also vital.

Gentle support can come from cordyceps and some other supplements that usually also gently support adrenal function.

Tai Chi and Qi Gong can be strengthening for kidney function.

Acupuncture can also help.

Some find microcurrent to help various functions but, for me, microcurrent treatments were very rough. I had more seizures for days. My body just can't handle very much pushing. So, if you do this, be sure to start slowly, with someone who understands lyme patients and who has experience with a wide range of lyme patients.

In the world of Chinese medicine, you'd look for "kidney tonic herbs" - a note of caution: herbs are best in a blend. Cordyceps, as mentioned above, is not stimulating but supportive. Many herbs used as kidney tonic (or "yang" herbs) can be a bit too stimulating for fatigued patients. So, a balanced formula, ideally individually designed by a ND or L.Ac., is best.

CORDYCEPS MUSHROOM (Cordyceps sinensis)

WHAT IT DOES: Cordyceps mushroom is sweet and bland in taste, and warming in action. It strengthens immunity and fortifies and heals the lungs, heart and kidneys. Used as a tonic for weakness in the elderly and to promote longevity.

A Google search of ``How the kidneys work" brings up many links. This is just one of those:

Your Kidneys and How They Work

==========

I use Salvia m. (in a formula) to help control seizures (With schizandra and other ingredients, I find it really helps). It also has other support mechanisms.

This article details how well salvia m. helps with microcirculation in the kidneys (even with patients with kidney failure):

The Use of Salvia for Patients with Renal Failure

Salvia has been used in treatment of chronic renal insufficiency in China for at least thirty years. In 1989, Japanese researchers reported on isolation of ...

Salvia miltiorrhiza, kidneys - 45 abstracts

Gotu Kola, Kidneys - 8 abstracts

Gotu Kola is also one to consider. It is not a cola and only mildly stimulating, but not "wiring" at all:

Gotu Kola

Excerpts:

Gotu Kola is bitter and astringent in taste and cooling in action. It is a brain and memory tonic, and an anti-poison, and very useful for wound and skin healing.

These studies illustrate the plant's numerous stimulating effects on the healing processes of the skin and connective tissue.

Cordyceps is among the support measures listed here:
