Just some numbers/facts I checked out tonight. Thought you'd like to see them just for fun?
Remember the final 2009 numbers won't be official till much later this year.
This comparison below refers to the national program designed and implemented in 2000 by the Surgeon Genreal to make more people healthy.
The state health departments are SUPPOSE to be showing a reduction in the number of Lyme cases in the "targeted states".
They aren't doing too well. Actually, they are doing VERY poorly.
BUT... by changing the reporting criteria last year, these states HAVE reduced their numbers (surprise, surprise). Just not enough to reach the set goals (for which they received funding). So much for tax payers money at work.
2007 and 2008 reported Lyme cases from targeted states
Connecticut- 3,058 to ZERO**
Delaware- 715 to 766
Maryland- 2,576 to 2,076
Massachusetts- 2,988 to 1,039
Minnesota- 1,239 to 1,183
New Jersey- 3,134 to 2,801
New York- 4,165 to 5,914
Pennsylvania- 3,994 to 6,958
Rhode Island- 177 to ZERO**
Wisconsin- 1,816 to 1,146
`````````````````````````````````````````````` NOTE- Many more states than normal reported a reductions in their numbers (rather than the normal increase) this past year.
2008- Number of states in which case numbers have gone down from the previous year- 28 states
Compare to:
2007- Number of states case numbers went down from the previous year- 8 states
(Only one state, Rhode Island, went down more than a total of 10 in 2007)
```````````````````````````````````````````` Total number of cases reported in all targeted states.
2007- 23,862 Total cases in targeted states
2008- 21,885 Total cases in targeted states
````````````````````````````````````````````````
In states typically reporting the most cases- Numbers went down over 6,800 cases from the previous year
`````````````````````````````````````````````````
Interesting notes:
Pennsylvania had the biggest increase in numbers in 2008.
Arkansas went from 0 cases in 2003, 04, 05, 06 to 8 cases in 2007 and back down to 0 cases in 2008.
11 states have already reported cases in the first two weeks of January 2009. Maryland reported 33 cases so far this year (2009) out of the total of 74 reported nationwide.
California cases jumped up from 75 cases to 205 cases between 2007 and 2008.
Florida cases jumped almost 4 fold in one year, from 30 cases to 115 cases.
Maryland is 7th highest in the nation with total number of cases.
Colorado reported only 8 cases in 8 years, seven of them were in 2008.
Georgia, AZ, CA, CO, FL, VT and Oregon had more than double their numbers from the previous year. Note- none of them were the "targeted" states.
Kansas cases went down from 173 to 5 cases (2007- 2008). Did a tornado go through and take everyone to Emerald City to see Dorothy?
Top 12 states in total numbers- NY*, PA*, CT*, NJ*, MASS*, WI*, MD*, MN*, RI*, DE*, VA, NH
* State is on target list for Healthy People 2010
````````````````````````````````````````````````
1,443 cases of Ehrlichiosis were reported in 2008 in the USA, which is down from the 1,973 reported in 2007.
Hey BG...
I just tried it again and this is what I got. BTW- I tried it from your link and mine... same response.
PAGE NOT FOUND
We cannot locate the page you're looking for. Please check the address and make sure all letters are lowercased with no spaces. You may also move to a different page by using the links in the menu bar above.
Sorry, I didn't notice the link; I'll go look again.
While I will try to get you a more accurate # as 2 Dr.'s here are not dx. people once they diagnosed me--That's one positive thing that came from all of this!!!
Anyway, I was the first case this Dr. had ever seen.
But I do know of 2 personally in my very, very small dot (town) on the map in Boston, Ga!!
Just a side note----A famous clinic, the E**ry Clinic in AT*****, GA looked me right in the face WITH + rusults for Bb and a titer through the roof for Babesia WA-1-----threw them at me while laughing and said VERBATUM, "There's no such thing as lyme here in Ga.!!!!"
It didn't bother me as I didn't want to be there anyway, but what REALLY bothered me was that he was teaching a student that was standing right next to him!!!!!! I told him, YES it does and I pray that you will learn more about it!!!
Lou----Please don't be mad at me!!!!! :*( I think that I may have come close to breaking the rules---sorry!!!!
It's just that I know 2 people from N. Georgia paying out of pocked to go here and it breaks my heart!!!!!
sorry,
Janet
Hey scared...
You in Georgia? Says so on your From section... soooooooooo...
Good effort on your part here... and thank you so much for trying...
BUT... PLEASE...
Don't beat your head against the wall in this regard. I KNOW it is frustrating but not worth the stress.
Georgia has a very weird thing going on that we've been trying to get "fixed" by working with your state representatives.
FYI-
Georgia is a "problem child" when it comes to reporting numbers. Seems they have a different system than the other states.
Me tinks they forgot that the war is over and Atlanta isn't the US Capitol. It seems they still however, just do what they want down there anyhow.
HA!
You'll note when looking at the numbers and the were going up.. then all of a sudden the case numbers dropped drastically.
In Georgia, a year prior to the big drop, they decided to use their own (CDC) tests for determining cases.
Their tests are so bad.. might even be the ones that the HOLD THE MAYO clincic uses (?) but they are obviously NOT working and haven't for years.
Your other problem is that you are the home to the CDC. Now ain't that a pain in the backside!
There may come a time when we need to ban together and make a BIG stink. I'll be working on this situation again this summer... so hang in there and if you can.. be ready to rock and roll.
OK?
In the meantime.. you might want to encourage those who are testing positive to make a NICE NICE call to their reps and tell them they would like to do something about the reporting of Lyme in Georgia... and tell them their case wasn't counted. No big details... just a simple call.
That will help me and others to help you.
BTW- I lived in Georgia... near the home of Julia Roberts. It was the year it snowed so much everything was shut down for 2 weeks. I had 18 inches of snow at my place.
Are you old enough to remember that year? Early 1970's.
