well yes Geneal,
my swallowing seems to just go "out". I haven't choked or aspirated. It just feels like my food is stuck at the top of my throat and when I swallow again, nothing happens. It feels dry and thick too (if that makes sense) like my throuat is clogged with mucous but there is none.
I am very afraid and cannot believe how long one must wait for the various studies to take place.
I do believe this is TBI related. Has been going on for three weeks, some days worse than others.
What techniques might I use?
Thank you, Feelfit
I try to do liquid pureed things but it still happens with these things too. It is always after acouple of swallows.
I am surviving on pudding, yogurt and berries,v-8 juice, and over easy eggs. Water usually goes down fine.

I have achalasia, where the nerve endings in the esophagus do not work. It was progressive in that initially there was a sensation of food getting stuck after I swallowed, around my breast bone. Now, after I initiate a swallow, it will go down but gets stuck higher up. I have a hypertensive upper esophageal sphincter, so it blocks it from going down. I have had a few episodes where I am having trouble actually initiating a swallow. That, for me, was very scary.
I am supposed to have a myotomy on the upper sphincter, but have yet to commit to it. I must modify my diet so that the food consistencies that I eat are safe and the way I eat must ensure that it goes down. I am ok with liquids, so if I eat anything solid, I must follow each bite with quite a bit of liquid.
Geneal, I am a speech pathologist...is that your field as well? I could not believe that I started to have swallowing problems..but it has helped as far as helping myself out. Do you know any thing about cricopharengeal myotomies?

I am a Speech Pathologist.
I've never had a patient with a cricopharyngeal myotomy,
But have spoken with ENT's and Upper GI docs about them.
Wow!!! Do you aspirate? High risk with that disorder.
Are you on a pureed diet? Mech soft?
Staying upright for at least one hour after meals?
I am sure you know all the techniques.
There is a lot of reported success with the surgery.
Would you have to worry about reflux after the surgery?
Be on an acid reducer as a precaution?
Hmmmmm.
I have the same issues with the food getting stuck at the top of my throat.]
Sometimes pills.
A chin tuck (chin into the chest) with the swallow really helps me.
Also alternating every bite and sip.
I tuck for each one.
Lemon ice (they make sugar free) also helps me.
Cold and lemon will elicit a stronger, faster swallow reflex.
Are colder things easier to swallow such as liquids?
Can you swallow soup just as well as a drink?
Sometimes thermal issues can directly affect sensation/reflex.
Are you scheduled for a Modified Barium Swallow Study?
They can usually be scheduled via an Out patient Radiology/Speech Pathology dept.
Usually within one or two weeks.
If you'd like, PM me.
It is hard to evaluate a swallow without seeing it,
But I'd like to help any way I can.
Hugs,
Geneal
