Trying to make a list of the most commonly used supplements that Lyme patients take.

Anything but prescriptions can be listed.

Don't forget stuff like eye drops, teas, herbs, creams, etc.

Need to get a good number of folks to reply so it is a better sampling.

Thanks!!!

A little bit of background information about myself first. I have had Lyme disease for over 20 years - undiagnosed until two and a half years ago. I have gone a completely holistic route - no abx (it is almost impossible to receive treatment for Lyme disease in Canada, so I didn't have a lot of choice.)

I am about 80-85% better than five years ago when I was very ill. I work full time, bike to work almost every day and go to the gym on weekends.

Most essential supplements:

-Vitamin D 3 - approximately 5000 IU daily in winter. Try to get it through sun in the summer.
-Herbal formula energy tested for me
-Magnesium citrate - taken to bowel tolerance
-Digestive enzymes

Very important supplements
-Grapefruit seed extract
-Oil of oregano
-coconut oil
-sarsaparilla tea
-essential fatty acids
-acidophillus
-bromelain

I have cycled on and off numerous supplements over the years, some of which have been energy tested for me, but the ones above are my top picks.

Other essential aspects to getting well included: working out regularly (which I couldn't do for 3 years), juicing every single morning, low carb diet, no booze, no coffee and very little sugar and gluten or dairy. I am not cured, but I am WAY better.

Hope this helps.

Gwen

I would think (and hope) that Probiotics is the most common supplement in the Lyme community.

Probiotics

Was taking some of the supplements recommended in the book Healing Lyme, but ran out of funds.

Xango (donation from others)

Isocort

Detox Tea

Ginger Tea

Some kind of tea to help with sleep

If I had the funds I would add:

Reservetrol (Possibly Vivx with Shaklee)

B Complex
Vit C
Ginko Biloboa

A good vitamin (possibly Shaklee's)

The two supplements that start wtih an A from "Healing Lyme"

Ok Brain is going..will come back later

Doc just suggested several supplements and will list those.

But, don't have the funds to get them right now.

Glycine (montiff), melatonin,
glycine to fall asleep,
melatonin to go back to sleep

Samento
bandero
quina

Teasel Root (10 drops 3 times a day)
Red Root (30 drops 3 times a day)
Bone Set (30 drop 3 times a day)

Helps with Bartonealla, cognitive and ?

Brain function:
Phosphotidyl
Serine

I also would like to add the Trace Minerals from Cowden and the detox stuff from Cowden

Along with many others already mentioned here, my LLMD recently started me on:

Transfer Factor -ImmunePlus by Researched Nutritionals. Will probably move on to the Lyme specific one after a while on this one.

My CD-57 was going lower an lower and this is to help my immune system get going on it's own. What a novel idea! [Big Grin]

As I understand it, Codex will take all of this away from us for good on December 31, 2009.

Supps. have helped me SO much, that I will die when that happens, which is exactly what they want....to get rid of the "useless eaters". (See New World Order Agenda 21 if not familiar with this horror).

Their own estimates are that 3 billion people will die when their standards are implemented. Until then, I'll continue taking:

NSI Synergy RX Multi-vitamin w/minerals
COQ10 (ubiquinol form)
Vitamin D3
Neptune Krill Oil
Epicor Immune Modulator
Better Bladder pumpkin seed extract
Integra-Lean Irvingia
Magnesium Citrate
Calcium Citrate

Digestive enzymes (prescription strength)
L-glutamine
L-tryptophan
Undenatured Whey
NSI 15/35 Probiotics

I take 2 store-bought supplements (and then several bulk herbs that we make 2 teas from):

1. Theralac probiotic
2. Carlson Cod Liver Oil Super (1000 mg 100 Softgels) for natural Vitamin D - I can't take OTC synthetic Vitamin D as it makes my bones hurt very badly.

Food is just as important as supplemets to me, so I will mention that the majority of my diet includes wild salmon about 2-3 times a week, leafy greens like collards, mustard, turnip, and kale, cooked either in homemade organic chicken stock or sauteed with garlic and thyme and pine nuts.

Lots of real wild rice. We also mostly eat free range organic chicken and sometimes grass fed organic steak - if you look locally you can sometimes find local farms that have great prices on grass fed beef cuts, poultry, eggs, dairy, and organic produce - I have some resource links and more info if anyone is interested.

We eat greens almost every day, and lots of veggies. Only wild caught fish - farm raised is the worst for mercury and chems. I eat an egg every morning because I have crazy low blood sugar and need the protein.

Things I absolutely can't have (personally):

NO alcohol
NO caffiene (including any chocolate)
NO milk and most soft cheeses or yogurt (I developed a sensitivty to it over the last couple years)
NO tomato sauce, though a raw tomato slice or two treats me ok (tomato sauce is very acidic and hurts my stomach/causes GERD flare)
NO spicy foods (until I get better of course!)
*very* little sugar

We try to only get organic as possible, but it can get expensive. Our garden flopped this year, otherwise we could have had all organic produce for 4 seasons for very cheap.

My husband has been making me 2 herbal medicine teas. We buy the herbs in bulk, and try to get only organic and/or wildcrafted herbs. Many of these can be grown easily in most temperate zones - we will be moving soon so we don't have an active herb garden now.

Stomach Tea:
Since I was dealing with a stomach ulcer for a long time, and I have bad acid reflux/GERD, I needed extra help with taking meds which made it hurt more.:

Chamomile
Marshmallow Root
Slippery Elm

Detox Tea:
This helps me IMMENSLEY, with the intent being to bind and remove the toxins from Lyme and its die-off, and helps my body lessen the ill-effects of antibiotics etc.

Sarsaparilla
Wintergreen
Birch Bark
Chamomile
Licorice Root (very small amount of licorice - too much makes me herx very strongly)

I take a combo of half and half of each tea in a mug every morning after breakfast and every night before bed. If I miss the detox tea I notice big time - too many symptoms to list here.

Also, the stomach tea helps greatly if I start having my ulcer or reflux problems, so I drink that occasionally during the day if I ate something that bothered me, etc.

edited to fix for neuro-lymies (I should know better, I am one! very sorry everyone.)

Wow, there are just SO SO many supplements listed here. It must be a full-time job popping them all every day! Is anyone taking 100 pills+ a day?

I take supplements too, but the sheer volumes shown on this thread amaze me.

ELECAMPANE drops seem to be actually NEEDED for me for babesia (along with Mepron/Zithromax), i think; just my feeling; (that's a sbustitute for the Nutramedix Enula).

LOMATIUM drops i take as antiviral, it really kills my potential Herpes outbreaks, which i don't get thanks to Lomatium.

Cardamom for babesia.

Pau d'arco drops have naphthaquinone; isn't that the same stuff as Mepron, atovoquone?

Artemisinin 3 or 4 days a week.

Iron--Dr J S writes that for Artemisinin to be effective, your Ferritin should be at least 45; and since i was anemic, i take a lot of iron pills

Strontium for osteoporosis
Vit K2 menaquinone-4 (called Menatetranone)for osteoporosis

Calcium
Magnesium
Vit D3
Boron,Zinc,Selenium
B-50s
Biotin 5 mg
Folic Acid 2000
B12
Vit C
Choline/inositol
Lecithin
Glucosamine
curcumin
Allimax (expensive, but have to have it to prevent yeast problems)

Milk Thistle, lots!
Probiotics, lots!
Serrapeptase
Nattokinase
Astaxanthin
Grapeseed extract
Grapefruit Seed extract (GSE)

Polygonum (found in SourcNaturalsResveratrol)

Andrographis
Sarsaparilla
Neem pills
Pau d'arco pills
Gotu Kola
Eleuthero
Ginko
Propolis
Horsechestnut
Peppermint oil pills
Oregano oil pills, sometimes
Digestive enzymes
lactoferrin
Rhodiola
Quercitin
Calcium-D glucarate
EGCG
Nettles tea, not always
Green tea
Apple pectin
Cilantro extract drops

lysine sometimes
Indole-3-carbinol
Vit E sometimes
Broccoli pills sometimes
fish oil pills sometimes
Betaglucan sometimes
Colostrum pills if urgently needed,--- works!
(Bovine)Immunoglobulin pills sometimes (causes inflammation, don't know if they do anything good)

Quina drops, have as backup
Cryptolepis,have for future tx
Cumanda, no reaction from 45 drops!
Noni, once in awhile(alkaloids hurt my tendons)
Cat's claw, once in a while (alkaloids hurt my tendons)

While on Mepron, i had to stop taking most of the antioxidants except once a day away from the Mepron. Is that correct?? Big problem and unknowns about the Mepron, whether and which antioxidants are allowed??? Dr J S writes that it's a problem, and he hopes for future resesarch.

from pamois.

Tincup, When you do get your 100 listings, will you want help creating this into a document? I'll volunteer, but suspect you've got it under your wing.

Also, when the document is completed, will it be posted anyplace or can the participants gain a copy?

Thanks Grace

Hello.. Tincup. I was wondering when you make the list is i possible to sort them out as in .. what they are mainly used for.

For instance right now I am doing research one which ones are
for parasite cleansing.. which ones help virus..
Which are anti bacterial..
Which are anti fungal..

And so on....

That would really hep as we sort through.

As well which ones are for
Detox help
Adding to nutritional support..
IF they have a mechanism that is known to do something such as
work against or for something else.?

Am I asking too much?

I am doing reading and researching and it is a lot of work and when I see someone mention a new supplement of some sort I try to keep a log and I try to research it ..

then I am trying to choose from there a protocol of my own without guessing or taking things that do not make sense with one another.. or so I do not overdo one thing or another.
and so on and so forth.

Deb
I would be willing to help out too .. if you would like.

GraceT and DebAZ..

I was sitting here crying till I saw your posts.

[lol]

It is NO secret I am a horrible organizer. I DREAD having to sort through this stuff.. but since I need it I would have to try.

If you all want to help... Praise the Lord and YIPPEE!!!

You couldn't have said anything more magical to my ears.

And yes.. I want this final product to be used by anyone and everyone... so a group effort here is VERY much appreciated.

If we can get 100 responses... that is just a good round about number and enough to get a good sampling....

Then we can chat and share duties.

I'll be offline shortly for a few weeks. Hopefully there will be a lot of responses by then. When I get back online.. you'll see me stumbling around... remind me and we can work on it.

And thank you for offering. I think we will have a good final product that can be used in different ways.

[Big Grin]

PS.. Betty G.. thanks for keeping this post up top.

This is a good thought...making a list of what supplements we most use and what works the best...however, someone else mentioned Codex and the desire by corporations to take away our natural supplements.

I know we all talk about what we use anyway here in an informal way but it just struck me today that because this list is public and I'm sure there are different factions monitoring it....that we need to be careful as to what information we give away. We also give away very private info about ourselves...basically our medical histories

As of now, we are protected from CODEX by the 1994 DSHEA bill which classifies supplements as foods. If they were to tamper with that bill, then we'd be in trouble.

I invite any of us to get more acquainted with the topic at www.healthfreedomusa.org

Some good news: Health Freedom just got voted into the list of ten top national priorities for the new administration.

Now they want our input on each of these priorities, to develop some national policies.

So...we can go and chat about what health freedom means to us, including as Lyme patients, as users of supplements, etc. Go see my post in Activism on it.
