I will ask the PA this question, but I thought I would get everyone's advice on the best way to remedy this matter. Yeast can't be good. Since being on abx, I have been taking Nystatin pills and probiotics religiously, but apparently this did not prevent yeast overgrowth.

I haven't been following an anti-candida diet, however.

According to the testing, I did have some species of good bacteria in my stool, but two of the four good bacteria they looked for weren't present, so apparently I still need more probiotics.

Since the test was run, I am now taking higher quality probiotics: VSL#3 and Metagenics brand Ultra Flora.

I am just wondering if an anti-candida diet and maybe some Diflucan and Nystatin will be enough to get rid of the "Many Yeast" they found in my stool, or if it is best to take a couple months off antibiotics to just let the yeast go away.

(When I take Diflucan, I don't get yeast die-off symptoms, but sometimes I do feel a little better, but nothing drastic. The yeast in me were shown to be "susceptible" to Diflucan in the Doctor's Data testing.)

So basically, my question is, given these results, am I going to have to go off antibiotics for awhile to fix this, or can this be fixed while on antibiotics?

Thank you.

I think the diet is CRUCIAL and maybe ask your llmd for nystatin powder. I did the pills and they didn't work as well.

I did the same test a while back, before abx...and it said rare yeast, no beneficial flora despite taking massive amounts of good quality probiotics. Our immune systems are so compromised as it is, when I first got ill yeast was a HUGE issue for me. Diflucan daily for 7 months. Totally changed my diet.

It's gotten much better but you can't totally avoid yeast on crazy amounts of abx. All you can do is try to keep it under control, or the symptoms at bay the best you can.

Thanks for the advice.

Yes, my LLMD recently switched me to Nystatin powder too, but I started the that after this test was taken. However, the pharmacist warned me I might have yeast die off symptoms from the powder, and I didn't notice any.

I am worried about taking Diflucan everyday, because I think that drug can be hard on the liver, but I guess you have to do what you have to do.

Is your doctor in CA? I didn't know many LLMD's were using Nystatin powder.

PS---what exactly do you cut out on your diet? Is it just a classic anti-candida diet, or is it more lenient?

Yes, my llmd is in CA. You should be ok with the powder. He wrote "good stuff" on my protocol.

I take no sugar of any kind, just stevia in lemon water and tea. I don't eat grains, pasta, potatoes, rice or any veggie considered a starch. Quinoa is ok. I eat alot of roast or grilled chicken, turkey, vegetables, lemons and limes, and nut crackers. I reacted to beef and pork so I stay away from those. I snack on sunflower and pumpkin seeds...and eat an avocado every day. Some foods are good for fighting candida like leeks, garlic and pumpkin seeds.

For cooking I only use olive oil, sea salt and turmeric. It gets a little boring, but it definitely helps keep the yeast in check!

I'm sure some can handle more options, but all my life yeast has been a problem for me and getting sick made it so much worse.

Are you supplementing with Saccharomyces boulardii also? It is a non-colonizing beneficial yeast that falls into the probiotic category. It can also be a competitor to C. difficile in the GI tract and may be able to help keep C. diff from getting a foothold if you are exposed.

If you can tolerate Nutribiotics Grapefruit Seed Extract, or Oil Of Oregano (put it in capsules), those would help sufficiently. As would eating garlic consistently.

Check for reactions with the GSE. I know it can't be used with Diflucan, but it can be used with a number of other things. If you can work up to 40 drops per day, that'll have a substantial impact on yeast.

I had been on antibiotics for 7 years in total. I had never taken any probiotics. I did a Dr. Data Stool test. All my probiotic bacteria were as high as possible except for E-coli, which was where I was off balance and I'm restoring that. I had +2 on the Dr. Data Candida testing, indicating it was present and "possibly" a pathogen, but you could tell those numbers were good given the context. Diflucan is only being used for 10 days in my case. We suspect I can handle it now.

I attribute my high healthy levels to diet, appropriate whole food supplement and Grapefruit Seed Extract

Nutribiotic GSE
Nature's Way Alive (whole food)
Diet: Mostly vegetables, whole grains -- high quality food basically.

VSL#3 really does an insanely good job as a probiotic and rebalancing everything.

Nystatin works well for yeast in the GI tract. Taking nystatin pills, along with an anti-candida diet, should take care of yeast. Also, freeze-dried garlic after dinner helps. Doing all these things has kept my yeast at bay while on abx.

Eating a low carb, anti- yeast diet is critical, not only for yeast but for lyme patients in general. Otherwise you will be feeding the yeast at the same time you are killing it off with medications. Basically, defeating your purpose.

Nystatin is not absorbed thru the intestine, so it won't help systemic yeast which most of us have being on long term ABX. Diflucan is absorbed thru the intestine and gets into the blood

stream. These two medications work differently. I have done tons of diflucan. You just have to have your liver enzymes monitored.

Grapefruit seed extract is excellent and you can buy gelatin capsules and fill them with the extract and swallow them and avoid the nasty

taste. Be sure to take your probiotics at least two to three hours away from any ABX , diflucan or nystatin or it will be killed off.

Any one on long term ABX should be supplementing with Saccharomyces boulardii in addition to a regular probiotics of multi strains. Saccharomyces boulardii is antibiotic specific.

Other good supplements that help with yeast are Olive leaf extract, oil of oregano, caprylic acid and raw garlic. It keeps vampires away too! [Big Grin]

It specifically protects against GI tract problems, including

diarrhea and Clostridium difficile. There are some

studies on it you can look up.

Hoosiers51 not sure your main question was ever answered. No you don't have to stop taking ABX.

You just have to follow a proper anti yeast protocol.

You need to get some florastor which is the saccromyces boullardi. You can go to CVS and they will special order it for you. Also, vitacost has a few lower cost options for sb. It is a yeast that fights yeast.

I have been on it for 8 months. Too scared I'll get c-diff.

Jarrow also makes it http://www.allstarhealth.com/f/jarrow-saccharomyces_boulardii_plus_mos.htm?utm_source=google&utm_medium=GPS&utm_campaign=6969

and so does nutricology http://www.vitacost.com/NutriCology-Saccharomyces-boulardii?csrc=GPF-713947510500

Doesn't matter where you buy it. There are tons of sites where you can get it, even Vitamin Shoppe has it.

The important thing is to get a reputable brand that has the highest amount per capsule per billion.

Update: spoke with LLMD's office. Since my CD57 is low (15), they think I have active Lyme and stopping antibiotics is a bad idea.

So, I am (very begrudgingly) going to start an anti-yeast diet, and they are upping my nystatin powder dosage. They will add Diflucan later, but not yet.

I am sad to give up my beloved carbs, but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do. [Frown]

RIP yeast.

Maybe bluntness will help motivate you?

If you're not willing to give up sugar to get well, then you're not willing to GET WELL.

Simple as that.

Also beware of sugar-free candies and cookies. They also feed yeast. I found out the hard way.

Good luck with your diet and keep us posted on how you're doing with it!

Be sure to check this list of OK and not-OK foods:

Thanks for the link.

A couple questions: berries are out? I heard somewhere else they were okay if they didn't have mold on them?

Also, green tea is out? (the list says no caffeinated beverages) I would love to keep drinking this if possible.

So does the guy on that link believe you can get rid of candida WHILE on antibiotics?

Nice discussion, lots of new tips for me. Tosho, good call on that product, which is from NOW Foods who I think makes good products.

I recently started taking Mycopryl, which is a product that was recommended by my ND. It contains caprylic acid, also found in coconut oil. The concentration of caprylic acid in this product seems much higher than in other products.

The biotin is important too, as it is reported that this is needed to prevent reinfection of various yeasts. Remember that there are MANY different kinds of candida; albicans being the most frequently tested.

I found an excellent article on candida, which also mentions a good protocol that includes Mycopryl.

Did you know that candida is dimporphic? Can change forms? And can even cause arthritis?!
[bonk]

This is an outstanding article on candida -- one of the most comprehensive (and alarming) I've ever read:

While trying to clear the body of yeast, I would leave berries out. For at least the first month.

Maybe you could do moderate amounts of green tea or go with decaffeinated.

I could ask Dr Brewer his thoughts on that. I would think he would say it would be difficult, but it would at least get it into a manageable range.
