For the past year I have been suffering from pain on the left side of my neck. It has varied from moderate to severe and it mainly occurs when I swallow. It feels like something is pressing on my throat.

The ENT cannot find anything internal. My LLMD thinks it may be carotidynia. I just know that the pain will not go away and I am frightened that is is something horrible like a tumor on my thyroid, tonsil, gland, etc.

Does anyone have this type of chronic pain? Does anyone know anything about carotidynia?

Thanks for your help.

Wow! I didn't think anyone else had heard of carotidynia (as in carotid artery)!

Before we honed in on Lyme, my internist (not LLMD) told me the ache in the side of my neck was carotidynnia in relation to the migraines I was having. Some how there is a migraine relationship to it... I also had swelling and a lump that I was afraid was cancer or something. It bothered me when I swallowed too and was worst a week before my period.

Now that I know that my migraines are very Babesia related, the various left-sided neck/throat stuff seems to be neuro-like Lyme stuff too. The nature of the symptoms would vary from month to month. Now they are almost non-existant, except when I take an abx vacation.

Do you get headaches too? Did your doctor give you any good advice on how to deal with carotidynia?

Thanks for this info. I am seeing the doc in the morning - yes, the morning after Christmas. ugh. I found some red spots on my left tonsil and was spitting blood last night. Not sure if it is related to my pain. My pain is better today by about 70%. Weird that it was an 8.9 on the pain scale all weekend and then about a 3-4 today.

I will see if this doc will do an MRI on my neck. She wanted to do a CT scan but I am reluctant to have more radiation.

Will keep you posted. Thanks so much for your help!

Just wondering how your appointment went. How are you doing?

Spitting blood but feeling better???? I'm no doctor, but ...did something burst and the pressure subsided?

I hope you are mending and doing well. I'm on an abx vacation and the carotidynia is creeping back. Hmmm....

Best to you,

My friend with Lyme & Bartonella & ??? has this. It was diagnosed by the LLMD.

It feels like someone is putting pressure on the throat, like someone is squeezing the throat. Other symptoms: ear pain and a sore throat.
