I had my PICC inserted on Monday and started IV Azithromycin. I had been on p.o. Azithromycin for about 7 months and my LLMD switched to IV due to the neuro symptoms and the possibility of having lyme heart.
I cannot take Rocephin because I am allergic to penicillin as well as any of the cephalosporins.
The IV Azithromycin is mixed in a 250cc bag and has to run in no less than 1 hour.
I have getting chest discomfort during and after each dose. It's kind of like a pressure and a cramping feeling. I have tried to allow the IV bag to warn to room temp. an hour or so before infusing and have also tried to infuse at a slower rate, but it doesn't seem to help.
The chest cramping / pressure begins about half way through the infusion and lasts for hours! I am thinking it is from pumping 250cc of fluid into my heart. My blood pressure is fine, I'm not sweating nor do I have any type of radiating pain.
I have been excessively tired and sleeping way to much since I stated the IV med.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Your thoughts please!

This may seem like a stupid question, but is your dose of the IV Zith the same or higher than the dose you were on orally? Have read that IV Zith does seem to be much more powerful than oral Zith.
Hubby has done IV Rocephin and IV Primaxin, but never IV Zith. His IV's always irritated his nervous system -- caused seizure-like episodes.
I don't think the amount of fluid is your problem -- actually I always added extra fluid to hubby's IV's in case I got the drip going too fast so it wouldn't be too concentrated. And I usually ran the IV's in about twice as slow as suggested.
In my opinion, you are probably having a herx reaction to the IV antibiotics. You could always stop the IV when you start feeling the pressure feeling and then try resuming it an hour or so later. I did that a few times with hubby. I almost always had to stop every single IV to give IV Ativan at least once. Someitmes I would wait awhile before resuming the IV.
You probably should call your doc, but he probably won't make any changes at this point unless your symptoms get worse.
Hang in there.
