My 7-year-old son has been on abx since Nov. 08. We think he was bit Oct. 15th, 2008.
He's been on azythromiacin for a few months and is now pulsing doxy/amox. for a month, then will go to Ceftin for another month.
He's taking Nystatin, vita b, a multi-vitamin, (many supplements).
I'm wondering if his little 7-year-old body is in any danger from being on abx so long. I realize that it isn't "long" to a lot of you who have been on it for years.
He's got one symptom: knee, leg and foot pain weekly.
Is that enough of a symptom to keep him on abx??
I have ordered a bunch of Lyme Disease books to understand this all better. But, what do ya'll think?

Your child's doc should be having blood work drawn on your son regularly to check his liver function. As long as that remains good, and your son seems to be tolerating the abx well, then the typical proticol (sorry, can't think of the proper spelling!!) would be for him to be symptom free for at least a month before titrating off of meds. (at least this is what our child's doc has done.)
If your child is still experiencing weekly knee, leg and foot pain, then he is not symptom free.
I know that it is nerve wracking/scary to see your kid being treated for something for so long, but this is not an illness that goes away over night.
Has your child been tested for co-infections? This is also another issue to consider, as co-infections need to be addressed as well for a person to get better.
Be patient, and talk to your child's doc about your concerns.
Best of luck for you and your child. kp

My four year old and five year old (when diagnosed)
Were on antibiotics for approximately 18 months straight.
We (LLMD and I) thought remission, but not yet.
They are both back on antibiotics.
I wonder about the doxy for a 7 year old though.
Doesn't that cause teeth staining in children?
My daughter's symptoms right now involve shakiness and nausea.
Not normal over time for a 7 year old.
Hang in there.
Hugs,
