My hair has been wrecked by my abx. Everything I used to do for it has had to change.
Eventually, I went to the woman who cuts my hair and explained the whole situation--why my hair looked so awful, what I was going through, etc.
She's had other clients with chronic medical conditions, and has been able to work magic with my hair--changing the cut and doing some partial foils.
It's more expensive than my old routine, but at least I "don't look sick."
Maybe go for a consult with a really good hair expert...could figure out what will help.

It's funny you bring this up, because my hair is naturally brown and I add blonde highlights to it (I find it helps my dark under eye circles not look so bad!)
Well, whenever it get it done at a salon, they always seem surprised that it doesn't come out as light as they want it to. Sometimes, it hardly looks like they did anything to it, so I have gotten in the habit of over-exaggerating how blonde I want it, since it always comes out much darker.
For years I've been asking my family if it's really that hard to understand what "blonde" means?
It has become apparent over the years (I've been treating for awhile) that it must be something with the way my hair takes color.
Even lately, I had the girl bump it up a shade or two lighter from what I used to do (from when I wasn't on anything...now I'm on Bactrim and Minocycline) and this new lighter shade actually looked DARKER than the previous one.
So the moral of the story is that I think the antibiotics have something to do with it. Precription drugs can impact this sort of thing, I have heard that in the past.

i recently switched from those wash out hair colors to henna. I loved the way it came out and it colored the gray. Dono't know how long it will last as i just did it last weekend. But i like the idea of no chemicals.

Henna is a much safer product to have sitting on the scalp since anything we put there is absorbed through the skin in just 26 seconds.
I have two friends who use henna rinses and their hair so soft yet also fuller and stronger. It covers grey very well. There are many shades out there now.
As for highlighting to blonde streaks, that (usually) does not touch the skin but be sure to do it in a VERY well ventilated space - away from nail polish and other similar products, too.
I don't know if it is possible to not breathe any of that in.
Years ago, I used to still highlight and I had the same problem as Hoosiers. It would not really take - or it would take only to become very dark again in about a week.
I have medium brown hair and sure would like to go with some highlights but, even doing it myself outside, I could never figure a way to not breathe in some of the fumes when either mixing or rinsing off at the end.
I have zero grey but would love to look like the "sun did it." I know it can't lighten, but I'm thinking of a henna rinse to perk up a bit. I wonder if henna would "take" okay. Sounds like it did for dmbfam above.

Keebler, You could always try the lemon juice thing. Maybe if you don't want to sit in the sun, blow-drying would work just as well?
I actually also use Sun-In sometimes, which is mostly hydrogen peroxide, which I consider to be a safe thing. It is TERRIBLE for your hair, but if you deep condition a lot....eh, maybe worth it.
And you could probably look online how to make your own Sun-In if you are worried about any additives.
I just blow-dry with the Sun-In because it's actually heat activated. (this is when I don't go to the salon, or am trying to stretch it out).
If your hair is a darker shade of brown though, it might not look good, so use with caution!!! Most people hate the way Sun-In makes their hair look, but on mine, the peroxide actually makes it look like a natural shade of blonde (weird, I know....guess I lucked out).
It will destroy your hair, but it's all about if using deep conditioners for awhile to fix it is worth it to you....for me, it's worth it with the money I save doing it that way. AND, I find my hair takes Sun In (which is basically hydrogen peroxide) better than the salon dyes.

Hoosiers,
Thanks. I must be way more sensitive. I tried some Sun-In spray someone gave me. With a hair dyer I was blown away by the smell of perfume in it. Maybe it was an off brand, though.
Yes, soon the sun will be out and I intend to get my 20 minutes a day. My eyes could not do that until recently.
Lemon juice may just do it. I'd forgotten about that.

Oh, and I think there are also henna shampoos out there that lighten your hair over time too.... I had a friend that used one and she was happy with the results.
