Hello,

I was recently put on Toprol (time release,) a beta blocker to contol my quick pulse and agitation. The first night I noticed my sleep was worse, same the second. Then on the third night when I upped the dose I really had a hard time sleeping.

Have other experienced this with this drug? AmI making this up. It is in the side effect list. I want to give it a shot, but I don't think I can risk sleeping any worse than I already am.

I thought it would help me sleep becuase I would be calmer. That does not seem to be the case.

Thanks,
Kathy

Kathy,
Sorry you are having problems with your beta blocker. I take a different beta blocker that I've been on for years and I can't remember if it initially caused a problem with sleep.

Just want to say that sometimes it takes a few days or weeks for the side effects of a new medication to calm down. Some symptoms don't calm down but many do. Maybe call your doctor's office and see what they say?

Hope you feel better soon.

Terry

I've been on Toprol for about a year and a half due to my awful tachycardia and palpitations caused by the lyme and/or co-infections... And I never noticed that side effect from it.

When are you taking the Toprol? Are you taking it right before you go to bed? If so, maybe you want to switch around the times you're taking it. I take mine every day at the same time, in the morning.

I hope you notice some relief with it soon. I was first put on 25mg, but at around the year mark it seemed to wear-off some and I was having breakthrough tachycardia every once in a while... so my cardiologist checked out my heart and then upped the dose to 50mg.

Thanks for the responses. I am taking in it in the AM. It is the extended release so I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

Perhaps another note to the LLMD is in order. I swear I react badly to eveything that he gives me.

Venus, mine is also extended release. It never gave me an issue with insomnia.

Was this already one of your symptoms of lyme? I've never dealt with the insomnia as bad as some people with lyme do, so I'm always thankful for that. Maybe if it was already on of your pre-existing symptoms, the Toprol just aggravates it... or maybe it's not even due to the Toprol. I'd give it a few more days maybe to see if your body is just adjusting to it. Or, of course, just call your LLMD and ask him about it.

Yes, this is one of my problems, but it had gotten somewhat better. There was a noticeable change when I started taking it. I will give it through the weekend and then contact my LLMD I guess on Monday. He keeps giving me meds and I keep not being able to take them.
