Who has experience with a Pic line? My doc is thinking of installing one. Do abx flow in small amounts regularly from waist pack? What abx are used with them? How long will it stay in? Risk of infection? I am new to the list so may have missed discussion. Am very brain fogged and am having trouble figuring out how to use this list. Thanks for any helpful hints.

Welcome to LymeNet!

Picc lines are different set-ups for each individual.. so check with doc or IV company for more specifics for your case.

The choice of antibiotics and duration is up to your doctor. He/she will prescribe what they feel is best for your case.

Risk of infection for picc line is different in each person. Some never have one, a few will. There is a risk, so do take care of your picc line.

Any sign of trouble, call doctor immediately.

Sorry I can't be more specific but the doc makes your decisions.

I would say the benefits of the PICC line outweights the risks if orals are not working.

Ours home infusion company delivered meds weekly. Nurse also visited weekly and checked site and change dressing. We administered the IV's ourselves 1 x per day. Normally took about 1 to 1 1/2 hours to infused.

Others I've seen say they do more themselves; i.e. get meds from the pharmacy, change dressings, etc.

Insurance would only pay for 4 weeks of IV meds but that was actually enough to get over the hump and start improving.
