It really depends on the TYPE of sauna you are discussing as well.
I own a Far Infrared and they state I can do it up to an hour. BUT this is a different kind of sauna than the traditional ones in health clubs.

First, ask your doctor.
If it is a regular sauna, you should have your heart checked first.
With high heat, the heart can become stressed. Far Infrared saunas using low heat (about 105 F) like in the infrared saunas are safest and easiest on patients with health issues.
Even if it is a regular sauna, if you happen to be there when no one else is, you can crack the door so it's not too hot - and keep a moist towel over your head.
The lower heat also is kinder to the lungs. Even with lower heat, it's is best to start at shorter times.
If you are looking to buy one, be sure to get one free of pressed wood, plywood or toxic glues. Heavenly Heat Sauna (Far Infrared) is the brand recommended by some of the top doctors who treat patients with MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivities).
Many have found wonderful help with a far infrared sauna. It helps warm the body and that helps with circulation and sweat (so as to get rid of some toxins). Those who have elevated levels of heavy metals do well with this.
Again, if all you have access to is a regular sauna, there may still be a way to gain some benefit with simple adjustments.
Be sure to have lots of room temperature water (not cold, not iced) and replace electrolytes.
