How to Tell If You're Poisoning Yourself With Fish

Researchers are creating genetic tests to determine if mercury hiding in that "healthy" dinner could be messing with your brain.

Q:What is a "body burden"?

A: Toxic chemicals, both naturally occurring and man-made, often get into the human body. We may inhale them, swallow them in contaminated food or water, or in some cases, absorb them through skin.

A woman who is pregnant may pass them to her developing fetus through the placenta. The term " body burden " refers to the total amount of these chemicals that are present in the human body at a given point in time.

Sometimes it is also useful to consider the body burden of a specific, single chemical, like, for example, lead, mercury, or dioxin.

Some chemicals or their breakdown products (metabolites) lodge in our bodies for only a short while before being excreted, but continuous exposure to such chemicals can create a "persistent" body burden.

Arsenic, for example, is mostly excreted within 72 hours of exposure.

Other chemicals, however, are not readily excreted and can remain for years in our blood, adipose (fat) tissue, semen, muscle, bone, brain tissue, or other organs. Chlorinated pesticides, such as DDT, can remain in the body for 50 years.

Whether chemicals are quickly passing through or are stored in our bodies, body burden testing can reveal to us an individual's unique chemical load and can highlight the kinds of chemicals we are exposed to as we live out each day of our lives.

Of the approximately 80,000 chemicals that are used in the United States, we do not know how many can become a part of our chemical body burden, but we do know that several hundred of these chemicals have been measured in people's bodies around the world.

Sad, though, very sad.

LP - I looked into it & didn't find much about what to do about it. I like to swim - so, it does concern me.

I did see this product which looked interesting -

I never tried it, though.

If you have a pool, it's a different issue. I think there are things you can do to clean the water without using chlorine - like ozone or zeolites. I think there are some others, too.

This products seems useful but I haven't tried it:

NDF PLUS (Natural Detox Factors) by BioRay

A heavy metal, chemical, endotoxin, and radiation detox and immune system support supplement. A heavy metal detox that works!

Micronized chlorella, cilantro, probiotics, reverse osmosis, grain neutral spirits, and 25% probiotic predigested drainage and organ support: agaricus blazei, reishi, cordyceps, milk thistle seeds and horsetail. More fulvic acid complexes.

Chronic, debilitated patients; low battery focus / rouleaux, high stress. Raises both beta and theta wave amplitudes. More pronounced effect on neurological problems.

Mobilize and bind to all known heavy metals, also chlorine, and most likely other chemicals, pesticides, endotoxins, mycotoxins and plaque which may complicate their use as a HMT challenge dose.

Dosage: 5-10 drops a day. Some do well with more.

"In 2008 a study at Boston University tested traditional herbal products manufactured in India and the United States and found lead, mercury, or arsenic in about one-fifth of them."

$#!+

Might help explain why my cognition decline so precipitously after starting several supplements a couple of weeks ago, though.

That's why buying them from a reputable brand (pharmaceutical grade), the kind that are sold to Alternative MD's and cannot be bought in stores is important.

They are tested by the manufacturer and if they don't meet their standards they are rejected. Where do you think the rejected stuff goes to? Poorer quality brands buy them up.

In the old days the only place you could get the first tier brands were from your doctor's office. Now with the Internet you can get many of them over the net but the major big sites are not carrying the first tier brands. You have to know

what you are buying and the brands that meet good manufacturing practices. Yes, herbs and supplements are unregulated. The stuff you buy in drug stores and supermarkets are usually pure

junk with little of the active ingredient and contain lots of fillers, besides lead and other stuff you don't want.

Be especially careful with fish oils. If you are taking a supplement filled with heavy metals and PCB's better not to take any fish oil at all.

I rarely eat fish any more. Have not in years. I take high quality fish oil and occasionally order from Vital Choice over the net to get the purest fish I can find. I try to get organic grass feed animal protein whenever I can and eggs.

I read every label but there are toxins everywhere. All we can do is make the best choices we can and support our body in it's need to detox.

I have a filter on my shower head to pull out all chlorine and other fluoride . It's bad stuff.

I also have have a very high quality filter system on my drinking water. Nothing is 100% because we still have to breathe!

That's why it's so important to make sure phase 1 & 2 of liver detoxification are working at their best.

There's a new film coming out "Food, Inc.". We may never want to eat again!
